Carlisle Bay in Saint Mary, Antigua and Barbuda

Carlisle Bay Resort’s take on a Caribbean retreat is decidedly sophisticated, where plantation shutters highlight modern décor in a muted color palette of sage, gray and white. The ambiance is discreet enough for royalty – count Camilla Parker Bowles among recent guests – and a haven for exploration via sailboat or yacht. Three nearby Royal Yachting Association courses offer a prime opportunity to strengthen your captaining skills, and an endless network of coves and lagoons invites lazy afternoons of champagne cruises.

The location of this resort is excellent, in a secluded bay on the south of the island in beautiful gardens. The grounds are beautiful and the surroundings can reasonably be described as totally idyllic! It is relatively isolated and taxis are required to go anywhere else. The hotel room was in a good state of repair, light, airy, spacious and well appointed with a Nespresso machine, free snacks and soft drinks in the mini bar, free wifi even extending to the beach, nice toiletries and additional very thoughtful touches, such as insect repellant spray and umbrellas, There were many five-star extras, including free afternoon tea and free use of water sports facilities, although lessons were chargeable. We visited end of October / beginning of November and it felt like they were only just getting ready for the season. The white shirt staff customer service was very good. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and most helpful. However, there was a general feeling of not enough staff and those that are there were shuffled between different bars and restaurants, so they could not have them open as much as needed. There are four different restaurants, but only one or two were open at any one time; the main restaurant was only a la carte one day per week; one of the others was always a buffet. Meal service was interminably slow; for example breakfast invariably took 30 minutes from order to service, the buffet was not topped up frequently enough and generally one waited at dinner for at least 20 minutes with just cornbread and water. This is not really acceptable in such a resort. Another general disappointment was the food, which was not up to scratch in such an establishment. It was pretty and far too expensive for the quality and quantity. New chef required! The spa was good, with professionalism that did not extend to the yoga / Pilates instructor. We joined a Pilates class and after a very brief and inadequate warm up, but with no spinal warm up or stretching, then launched straight into fairly advanced positions with no preliminary enquiries as to back issues etc. It was a shame that the yoga pavilion suffered daily from wet mats and bird poo. If you are on top of your game, when it has rained heavily overnight you get someone in there to tidy up / take the mats in overnight. In short, The Carlisle Bay has the makings of an historic resort, but to use the tutor’s adage, could do better. Given the rates charged, it needs to.

Antigua is beautiful and the location of the hotel is brilliant. Lovely calm beach and we really enjoyed the snorkelling trips - the staff on the beach and at the watersports were really lovely and helpful. The rooms are spacious and I'd recommend a downstairs room overlooking the beach. Unfortunately what let this hotel down for us was poor service. We have stayed all over the world at 5* hotels and this unfortunately did not live up to expectations. Various staff and management got things wrong - gave us wrong information for trips and didn't book things such as taxis which we had arranged. This left us feeling embarrassed and rude with locals and just generally created a less relaxing atmosphere for our trip.

Great all inclusive holiday. We went for two weeks and came home extremely relaxed. We went with our 2 year old daughter. The hotel itself was beautiful. Amazing reception with fish ponds our daughter loved. We had a two bedroom room on the beach and really enjoyed every aspect of our stay including complimentary washing and ironing service (a real treat when you have a 2 year old) the food was delicious and so was the entertainment. The pool was really nice and the pool staff super friendly. We had a great boat trip and day trip to the hills to watch the sunset and listen to local carribean music which we loved. Spa was stunning and we had a great service. Our daughter wasn't too keen on the kids club but she was only tiny. We will definately be going back one day...

We stayed here for our 4 night stop in Antigua. We were greeted with friendly smiles and nothing was to much trouble - even got a late breakfast having travelled from Barbados on an early flight. The suite was magnificent with a split level lounge and balcony - bedroom and the fantastic bathroom overlooking the rain forest. The only criticism would be that we were not told that the hotel was closing at the weekend for seasonal renovations which meant that staff were not as attentive as i presume they would normally have been. Nevertheless the beach is perfect for swimming and strolling along and we had a fantastic time meeting lots of interesting people. The hotel grounds were beautiful with lots of lush plants and a perfect pool. This hotel has quite a few different eating places including an italian, asian, caribbean and beach bbq. Its a bit out of the way on the south coast so you need transport.

Really good service, very good spacious accommodation. Not sure if the right thing to go with kids, fortunately we didn't, as they'd be bored. Food is nice, not super diverse but fine. Asian restaurant is a bit of a flop. Beach is great, so much that we didn't even get close to the pool. Water activities staff could be a bit more helpful. Distant from old town, but do yourself a favour and take the local buses/vans, which are inexpensive and take you all around the island - avoid taxis, which are expensive and drive like madmen. Hotel is not cheap. Oh... Flying insects alert!! But I don't think he majority actually stung but are a major nuisance. The minority who do sting... they get top of the ranks for them! (use repellent!)
