My husband and I stayed for three nights with my Aveda Pure Privilege points and extended two more nights on our own. We were in room 28, which offered an okay view, but we enjoyed it since it was easy to access by foot. The rooms higher up require a bit of a hike to get to, or you can wait for the shuttle to take you up. We really enjoyed our dinners at Carmichael's and mostly enjoyed our breakfasts at Sugar Club. Service is very slow, so be prepared to be at breakfast, or any meal at Sugar Club, for well over an hour. As the resort is so small, I was happy we did not get the all inclusive plan. You would have to spend all day at the resort (or the beach with the resort's waiter) and order a lot of drinks to make the price difference worth it. We had the shuttle driver take us to and from Darkwood Beach one day instead of the two beaches they offer the shuttle to, since it is on the way there. We decided to go a second day, and they said it would be no problem to pick us up to return. We timed our return to where they would be able to pick us up to return with the regular shuttle route coming back from the other beach, but the hotel told us they were not running the shuttle at that time and would not be coming to get us when we called. We then had to pay for a taxi to bring us back. That was disappointing, so be sure to communicate return times clearly with the shuttle driver. We had a couples massage at the spa, which was fantastic. If you are looking for a very peaceful resort with beautiful views where you can relax at the pool all day, Sugar Ridge is perfect for you.

I've been looking into staying here for over a year and finally pulled the trigger. Boutique, unpretentious hotels are my thing and they fit the bill for that. They aren't the cheapest but not the most expensive either. I didn't care for all inclusive (hence my choice against cocos) and I loved that you get the scenery of the mountains here but just a quick shuttle to the beach. The grounds are well maintained and the rooms are exactly how they are pictured. I'm a little confused how anyone is calling these rooms "small." I overpacked and still didn't find the room small ; ) I was prepared for the hills, so that didn't bother me. Just know what you're getting into. I found the hotel overall to be tastefully done. Pools are gorgeous. Some of the most wonderful guests I've ever encountered on my travels were here which says something about the clientele they are bringing in, truly fantastic people that I am so happy to have met. I did not plan to take this trip alone, but last minute it ended up that way, so it was great to meet friendly people along the way. I was worried it may be too romantic here but that was the not the case. And the staff, oh my goodness, how lovely you all were!!!!! They welcomed me in like family and I cannot thank you all enough!!! I was so sad to leave everyone. There are very few things I found as cons here but only minor critiques: 1) the food. For the record, none of it was bad. It just wasn't all that memorable either. I understand the vibe that Carmichael is trying to give so I wasn't put off by the pricing (I'm a New Yorker). However I just didn't feel like the food lived up to the pricing. Again it wasn't bad but the menu reminded me of a menu I would get here in NY. I think more local flare would push it up a notch. I'm giving the same critique for sugar club, again not a lot of local choices. Antiguan food is wonderful, I wished there was more of it here! I don't want to speak for all guests but the other guests I encountered felt the same, they were wishing for more local food here. 2) agreed with others that the reception/lobby staff is inconsistent. Some are great and others have no personality/warmth. 3) I realize hotels up charge for services but 80 USD to go to Shirley Heights is the most absurd thing I heard on my ENTIRE trip to Antigua. I thought the front desk was actually joking with me when they said it. I knew this was a rip off and thankfully I knew a local cab driver who charges half of that (which is the normal price FYI). I felt fortunate to have known this but felt bad for others who didn't know better. Please negotiate better pricing w the taxi services! But these are minor things and wouldn't defer me from returning. I am looking to come back soon to see you all! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We did like it here and felt very comfortable, maybe partly because it is not that "posh." The staff seemed nice and friendly, don't expect them to rush with anything, but I think you do have to accept that as part of the Caribbean way of doing things. Our room was really nice with a four poster bed and really nice balcony, although it was slightly tatty in places. We really liked the pool area and spent a few nice hours there. They will run you to two local beaches in the Land Rover- the first was Turner's which we did not like, it was very busy and we named it Costa del Turners The Nest is a lot better but you have to pay quite a lot for loungers there- we walked down the beach and put our towels down in a quieter area (which could be done at Turner's to be fair) As at least one other reviewer said, they didnt top up the toiletries which isn't exactly the end of the world but is suprising in what is puporting to be an upmarket place. There are a few bars and restaurants in walking distance from here in the Jolly Harbour area and a supermarket- you can get some cans there and drink them on your balcony! Overall we were really happy here but I think it's not five star/boutique/chic

My wife and I just finished a week long stay at Sugar Ridge, see her previosu post (sflor926). We travel very frequently; however this was our first stay at a resort that is not totally all inclusive.. needless to say it will probably be the last. Upon arrival, reception did not make a good first impression. Example: they were slow and not well organized. After offering us drinks it took a very long time to recieve them and when we finally did they told us our room was ready and we could not bring the glasses because they needes them. The room was nice overall, but very small compared to the size of the balcony. Generally it was pretty clean; however it appreared clearer than it really was. For example: after using the coffee pot it was never cleaned out, soap never replaced unless asked and they were very skimp on towels. On the website it states mini bar is included but it was never stocked once, not even when we asked. Even to get water you had to walk yourself to the restaurant. The grounds of the resort were not taken care of at all, dead plants, garbage and cans along the walk paths etc. It appears they maintain only was is in clear vision to all guests. The decor of both restaurants and bars were very nice, but the bathrooms dirty. Soap was always empty and if it wasn’t it didnt even clean your hands. The food the first two days at sugar club was not good!! The chicken in the salad you could tell was frozen, as well as the burger. Over the next few days the food did improve and seemes more fresh, but the service was horrible!!! At sugar club the service was soooooo slow. Breakfast was so drawn out and you could tell they were under staffed. The food at Carmichaels was a lot better quality and unfortunately you can only go once, after issues with the refrigerator in our room they did us an extra dinner there eventhough they were very rude about it. Steak is very good, first time we had dinner there is was perfect... second time service was not the great and the nats were unbearable. This same night in the bathroom the entire sink was covered in nats!!! So disgusting and the next day the same thing in the pool! You can visit two beaches, but shuttle only goes to one per day. The beaches are both incredible. The restaurants are both are kind of gross and servers rude !! One big annoyance was that any time you ordered something you had to sign a reciept .. which seemed ridiculous to us since we were all inclusive. Many times we would be done with our meal but had to sit there forever just to sign what we got. Overall, pretty resort.. mostly clean.. poor service... okay food.... very small pools.. rude staff.
