Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in Saint Petersburg, Russia

Crossing the threshold of Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg is like walking into a film noir. It resonates with drama, seduction and a bit of suspense. The hotel dates back to the 1820s, but its interiors - retooled at the most recent turn of the century - embrace the Art Nouveau movement. History abounds within its walls. Tchaikovsky honeymooned beneath its storied roof and George Bernard Shaw broke bread here with Maxim Gorky. The hotel also served as a hospital and orphanage before its painstaking restoration went underway in 1989. Today, it is one of Russia's most prized landmarks and is acclaimed by travel editors worldwide.

The rooms and suites have a formal setting with antiques and period-style furnishings that boast rich and textured fabrics, framing oversize windows and cloaking cushy beds. Some suites have sitting rooms, while others have Juliet-style balconies adorned with iron balustrades. With five restaurants, a pair of cafés and a bar stocked with the finest Russian vodka, you will always be satisfied while staying at the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe. Menus are graced with Russian fare and complemented with international offerings that include French, Italian and Asian specialties. Caviar also plays an instrumental role when it comes to the hotel's culinary offerings. Centrally poised along Nevsky Prospekt, one of the city's most remarkable thoroughfares, you will be within walking distance to many of Russia's monumental landmarks, renowned ballet and theaters. With warm Russian hospitality, impressive architecture and exceptional service, Belmond Grand Hotel Europe makes for an unforgettable experience.

World class luxury hotel that has especially nice modern rooms while maintaining the charm of St. Petersburg. The hotel’s location on Nevsky Prospekt was especially convenient for walking to nearby shops and restaurants even in the late winter weather. One evening we dined in L’Europe which was excellent. The hotel bar is not to be missed. The staff was very competent and attentive. The only negative is one that is often experienced during the winter...the rooms were too hot. I found that getting housekeeping to leave the windows open a bit and running the fan speed on high without heat made the situation reasonable. This was such a minor issue so don’t let it prevent you from visiting this lovely hotel.

Our wedding anniversary trip to Saint Petersburg was made genuinely wonderful by staying at the Belmond. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable and the standard of service in this lovely hotel is quite simply superb, and a credit to the Belmond group. Staff from the concierge team to restaurants could not have been more helpful and considerate. Food in all the various options is excellent, especially in L’Europe where you will be made to feel really special. ( Try one of the taster menus- amazing!) Being located right in the heart of this beautiful city meant that walking or trolleybus to most of the historic and cultural landmarks couldn’t have been easier and if you want to really make the most of a trip to Saint Petersburg, you will not do better. We have been fortunate to have stayed in some fabulous hotels across the world and this one is right up there with the very best. Well done Belmond and thank you.

The location of the hotel is superb right in the middle of most happening area of St. Peter’s Burg. I was there on a official trip in a big group. It’s a very old hotel but was completely renovated and depicts pure Russian architecture. Rooms were spacious and crystal clean. Breakfast was one of the finest with a lot of variety.

We got a good deal to stay here on a room only basis and had breakfast in the Mezzanine Cafe each morning. It really was remarkably good value for the quality of the hotel. Our luggage was lost en route and the hotel quickly offered us some kit for overnight and chased up our luggage several times a day until it arrived 3 days later. Because of our lost luggage, we arrived much later than anticipated and so it was 10.40pm before we were ready to eat on our first evening. The Azia restaurant closes at 11pm but as well as being delicious, they did not make us feel rushed at all. The room was good but the remainder of the hotel was beautiful. The service really was excellent from the reception to the concierge and doormen. Also any small problem and staff were there quickly (lightbulb needed replaced one morning). Quite often there was live music in the lobby bar which is also a lovely touch. The hotel is well located near to the Nevsky Prospect but our room was very quiet. It is about a 15 minute walk from the Hermitage and just round the corner from the Russian Museum and Arts Square. Incidentally we used Uber several times and found them efficient and remarkably cheap. We would highly recommend this hotel. (We had a little look inside the Astoria and much preferred the look of the Grand Hotel Europe!)
