Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in Saint Petersburg, Russia

Crossing the threshold of Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg is like walking into a film noir. It resonates with drama, seduction and a bit of suspense. The hotel dates back to the 1820s, but its interiors - retooled at the most recent turn of the century - embrace the Art Nouveau movement. History abounds within its walls. Tchaikovsky honeymooned beneath its storied roof and George Bernard Shaw broke bread here with Maxim Gorky. The hotel also served as a hospital and orphanage before its painstaking restoration went underway in 1989. Today, it is one of Russia's most prized landmarks and is acclaimed by travel editors worldwide.

The rooms and suites have a formal setting with antiques and period-style furnishings that boast rich and textured fabrics, framing oversize windows and cloaking cushy beds. Some suites have sitting rooms, while others have Juliet-style balconies adorned with iron balustrades. With five restaurants, a pair of cafés and a bar stocked with the finest Russian vodka, you will always be satisfied while staying at the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe. Menus are graced with Russian fare and complemented with international offerings that include French, Italian and Asian specialties. Caviar also plays an instrumental role when it comes to the hotel's culinary offerings. Centrally poised along Nevsky Prospekt, one of the city's most remarkable thoroughfares, you will be within walking distance to many of Russia's monumental landmarks, renowned ballet and theaters. With warm Russian hospitality, impressive architecture and exceptional service, Belmond Grand Hotel Europe makes for an unforgettable experience.

Coming from the Russian Museum or after a two-hour shopping at Nevsky, push the button "pause" and have a break in the mezzanine of the Grand Hotel Europe. You will taste the famous Red Kaviar but also a great choice of pastries, wines, teas or liquors in a quiet mezzanine at the sound of a guitar. Take your time!

Popped into this beautiful hotel for a quick coffee. We were directed to the Mezzanine cafe where an array of fabulous cakes were on display. We explained we had little time and despite our urgency we still received great service and great coffee. When we came to pay, the credit card machine wouldn't work, but the staff immediately asked if we had any other cash currency - we had Euros - and they promptly converted the amount due so we could pay. Fantastic prompt action by the staff to solve a potential problem.

Friendly and very efficient staff with excellent English, room well-equipped (dressing gown and slippers, quality towels and linen, coffee maker etc) if rather small for "de luxe". Great location - very near the Russian Museum, the Church on the Spilled Blood, the Mikhailovsky Theatre, the Philharonia Hall and Nevsky Prospekt. 10-15 mins walk to Winter Palace/Hermitage, St Isaac's, the Bronze Horseman... and great Georgian restaurant called Cha Cha a block away. But we used airport 'economy' taxi on arrival (booked at Pulkova Taxis desk in arrivals hall), and city taxi returning to the airport (arranged by hotel); hotel limos very expensive.

I was on a convention trip with my fellow associates. The location of this hotel is just fantastic, right in the middle of the city action. The room was spacious and super clean. Really had a great time. All hotel is non-smoking. Had to come out to the entrance to smoke every time otherwise there was a huge penalty in USD. Breakfast was great with a lot of variety and wifi all over the hotel was of super fast. Highly recommended.

Lovely central place to explore St Petersburg from, and our room had an amazing view of The Church of the Saviour of Spilled Blood, as had been requested when we made the booking. Our room was delightful, breakfast an amazing gourmet experience complete with champagne, and room service for our evening meal was excellent. Spoil yourself with a stay in this hotel.
