Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in Saint Petersburg, Russia

Crossing the threshold of Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg is like walking into a film noir. It resonates with drama, seduction and a bit of suspense. The hotel dates back to the 1820s, but its interiors - retooled at the most recent turn of the century - embrace the Art Nouveau movement. History abounds within its walls. Tchaikovsky honeymooned beneath its storied roof and George Bernard Shaw broke bread here with Maxim Gorky. The hotel also served as a hospital and orphanage before its painstaking restoration went underway in 1989. Today, it is one of Russia's most prized landmarks and is acclaimed by travel editors worldwide.

The rooms and suites have a formal setting with antiques and period-style furnishings that boast rich and textured fabrics, framing oversize windows and cloaking cushy beds. Some suites have sitting rooms, while others have Juliet-style balconies adorned with iron balustrades. With five restaurants, a pair of cafés and a bar stocked with the finest Russian vodka, you will always be satisfied while staying at the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe. Menus are graced with Russian fare and complemented with international offerings that include French, Italian and Asian specialties. Caviar also plays an instrumental role when it comes to the hotel's culinary offerings. Centrally poised along Nevsky Prospekt, one of the city's most remarkable thoroughfares, you will be within walking distance to many of Russia's monumental landmarks, renowned ballet and theaters. With warm Russian hospitality, impressive architecture and exceptional service, Belmond Grand Hotel Europe makes for an unforgettable experience.

We had two stays here separated by one night away, so I can report on two rooms. Both rooms were large and equipped as well as one expects for a hotel of this class, but both rooms had very hard beds which we both found hard to sleep on. There is a pillow menu, but no mattress menu. The staff are very good, and the breakfasts were excellent. The in-room wifi worked well. But there were very few power points in the room, and none very near the bed. So, as others have said, this hotel needs a make-over. We had good dinners in both Asia and Europa restaurants.

The Hotel is a little tired and could do with a serious freshening up. Food good and breakfast very good. Rooms are small with very limited wardrobe space. The concierge service was excellent and if you can take advantage of the Hotel Box to see the Ballet. The bar is excellent with great staff. This in terms of rooms is not upto normal Belmond standards.

this is very nice hotel to have business meetings in their lounge or restauraunts inside. it is center of city, expensive, but worth it. nice historical buildings, galeries, museums and walking areas around.

Truly elegant in every way and our experience in the Caviar Bar as well as our return to the Piano Bar was first class! Service, food and the surroundings made it the place to stay on a return visit! Do have an evening to remember here.

By this I mean for some people they are used to paying high prices for the best places as a matter of course. This would be a natural- very characteristic, charming, sense of place in an excellent location. For others like us this represents a serious splurge, as it really is very expensive, even before the 9.8% tax and tips in the restaurants. They do a big meeting/conference business and when there is one going on as when we were there, that takes over as well as lessens any need to discount. Since we had decided to stay there, we went all the way and did a 3-day culture package that included things we were going to do anyway. The included tours were private and it was comforting to have a driver with our name on a sign at the airport. The place has a tremendous sense of history. If you want modern, high-tech rooms this may not be for you, but it was comfortable. Amazingly quiet at night although we were facing the side street. Food: The Lobby Bar has a great barman, Kiril(?) engaging, and creative. Also surprising maybe the best carpaccio I've ever had. The main restaurant is really classic. The breakfasts are fantastic and can keep you going all day. We had a dinner included in our package with a very limited set menu. Outrageous wine prices and a pot of tea was $15.
