When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, part of the Legend collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, in 1919 it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Very well taken care of!!! Loved the hotel and the amenities!!! Staff were extremely helpful and accommodating to our needs. Restaurants and bars inside were quite pricey though, so finding some areas around in walking distance wasn't a bad idea, but would definitely stay here again!!!!

Writing this review now, but our stay was two months ago. This was our 4th time staying here and it was absolutely wonderful. The hotel and grounds are beautiful as ever and the friendly attentive service is unmatched. We had an issue with a smell in our room and the manager, Luis, took great care ensuring we were quickly moved into a different room. My dad joined us on this trip, his first time, and he was so impressed with all the Vanderbilt had to offer. He came to help watch our 9 month old daughter which worked out so well. The staff was very accommodating to her needs - they had a high chair and beautiful crib ready for us in the room. We stayed in a Biltmore Suite and it was perfect for 2 adults and one baby. We could relax in the living room or on the balcony while she slept in the bedroom, then we quietly wheeled her into the living room when it was time for us to sleep in the bedroom. My dad stayed in the older ‘heritage’ rooms which we had never seen and it was absolutely beautiful! Great decor and perfect layout - coffee bar, large closet, marble bathroom. The only thing they could improve upon is turning the music down by the family pool. The clientele (young kids, quiet couples and older adults) did not seem interested in heavy bass. Nonetheless, we can’t wait to come back again!

Surprisingly tough to like right from the start when we waited with several other patrons for rooms that weren’t ready well past check in time. Food was mediocre. Service average. Swimming and beach limited. Perhaps expectations were too high for this establishment.

Breathtaking ocean views from the balcony. Stayed in the two bedroom oceanfront commodore suite. Room was clean and always fully stocked. Concierge was quick and responsive. Felt very safe, and comfortable. Lovely property, well maintained and great location. Booked Culebra beach tour with the concierge. Cons: check in took longer than expected

The hotel is amazing! We were in San Juan for a conference and did 5 nights at the Vanderbilt and 3 nights at another hotel. The Vanderbilt was luxurious and the views were amazing. We stayed in 3 three different rooms over 5 days. The service was great, all staff were friendly and helpful. My biggest complaint was the price of the drinks! Outrageous!!! The food in the hotel was ok. Be prepared to pay $50 per head for the breakfast buffet!
