Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in 1919, it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Liven up the senses with a morning walk on the beach. Take a taxi to Old San Juan, a 400-year-old enclave still buzzing with life. Explore the old forts of the northern "walled city" and duck into boutiques all the way to the piers. Savor a four-course prix fixe meal of local, organic cuisine at 1919, pairing an Oregon pinot gris and wild salmon confit with spring vegetable pistou.

If you are going to San Juan and looking for a hotel, you only need to know two words: Condado Vanderbilt. I cannot say enough about how amazing our experience was at this property. From beginning to end, the staff at the Condado Vanderbilt completely took care of us. I traveled to Puerto Rico with 3 of my girlfriends. From the moment we arrived, we received excellent treatment. We were greeted with warm smiles and champagne! A very handsome and friendly bellhop, Eduard, took us to our room. Along the way, he gave us great recommendations for food, activities, and drinks. Every day, we received first class service and great recommendations. The house keeping staff was amazing. Every day, we returned to a spotless room. One day, our jaws dropped once we entered the room because it was so spotless! Of course, we made sure to contact the front desk to find out who serviced our room and left them a huge tip. When it was time to check out, we sincerely did not want to leave. There was an issue with our bill but the front desk agent cleared it up quickly and removed the charges from my account. When I go back to Puerto Rico, this is the only place I’m staying. There is no better hotel!

As a Wedding Planner, I work in different hotels in Puerto Rico. Last Sunday, I worked Yamin & Nelson Wedding. They and their guests stayed at the hotel. I highly recommend this venue for a Wedding. Paola Soto was the manager in charge of this wedding, she and her staff was amazing, everyone gets along 5 star. I want to also give special thanks to Elaine, who took extra care to the bride and groom, a very personalized experience. Apart from the Catering Department, Mr. Alberto Vera was the Butler in charge of Yamin & Nelson. I cannot begin to say enough good thing about this gentleman. He's amazing! Shout out to Alberto for his excellent OVER THE TOP SERVICE.

The Condado Vanderbilt hotel was a definite surprise as a high end luxury hotel. After comparing the prices of the Ritz Carlton and St Regis, we opted to stay in the Condado Vanderbilt Ocean Front one bedroom suite for the same price as a two double bed standard room at the other two top rated hotels in Puerto Rico. The Condado Vanderbilt is located very close to the old town of San Juan - a $4.50 Uber ride away. The area of Condado is very beautiful with high end shops and restaurants within walking distance. If you are too tired to venture out - the hotel offers several restaurants to choose from ranging from Ola, a more casual restaurant, to 1919, considered one of the best on the island, and awarded with a Michelin star. The suite was spacious with a sitting area and dinette. The bar area had a sink, microwave, ice maker and refrigerator. Water was replenished daily as were on alcoholic drinks which was a nice treat. The views from the balcony were gorgeous, reminiscent of being on a cruise ship - all you see when you look out is water. The mattress and bedding were heavenly. What an amazing value for a one bedroom suite of this size in the Caribbean. The room incidentally came with 24 hour butler service. We were really pampered and every need taken care of. Our butler helped us choose various day trips from San Juan which the concierge helped organize. The pool bar had delicious, fresh drinks - the Vanderbilt mojito was one of our favorites. While the value of the condado Vanderbilt for a 5 star luxury hotel was outstanding, the food was very expensive. This is true for the entire Condado area, however and not specific to the hotel alone. A pizza for one from the wood-burning stove at the pool, will set you back $18 and items from the kids menu were $14. Everything we ate from the Ola grill restaurant which also serviced the pool was outstanding. Overall, this hotel was extremely luxurious with a gorgeous and richly decorated lobby which really put the Ritz Carltons lobby to shame (we visited the Ritz to eat at BLT). The only negative of this hotel is the beach. The website shows an immaculate sandy beach. The shore was covered with seaweed and the beach itself very windy and wavy. I would not consider this hotel if you are expecting a gorgeous beach. Luckily the gorgeous beach on the island of Culebra are a catamaran ride away!

It pains me to give this hotel only a 4 rating. My visit started on a high note and I was so impressed and excited. I felt like a star. We were sent a bottle of champagne to enjoy for our 25th anniversary & delicious dessert to share. Unfortunately, after day 2, it kinda went downhill a bit. The hotel & the grounds are lovely. The best bed I've ever slept in during a vacation. We stood in the Biltmore suite & the view was spectacular. My issue was mainly with housekeeping, It wasn't consistent and it drove me nuts, made multiple phones calls and It was only resolved once. Regardless of this issue, I would definitely stay again.

The property is located in the heart of Condado. The staff were very attentive and the rooms were nice. If you are there definitely visit 1919 Restaurant for a truly five star dinner experience. Tequillas and Tacos have a pretty awesome fresh guacamole also a must try.Great hotel experience in Puerto Rico.
