Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, part of the Legend collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts in 1919, it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Liven up the senses with a morning walk on the beach. Take a taxi to Old San Juan, a 400-year-old enclave still buzzing with life. Explore the old forts of the northern "walled city" and duck into boutiques all the way to the piers. Savor a four-course prix fixe meal of local, organic cuisine at 1919, pairing an Oregon pinot gris and wild salmon confit with spring vegetable pistou.

I go to PR about 5 times a year on business I always bring my kids and mom during the stay. Normally I stay at the Stellaris but they weren't taking reservations at this moment. I was extremely hesitant to come because I have a 3 and 1 year old and this is obviously a hotel for adults. Pros: During a time when the island is devastated the Vanderbilt had all the amenities and services 100 percent running. Location is perfect, CVS down the street, Uber service close by, and restaurants around. Staff friendly to myself and children. TV and wifi were complementary, room service was pretty quick and food was tasty. I loved the pancakes for breakfast and chicken in the evening. Rooms were spacious and the shower and bathtub was appreciated in my suite. The minibar was cool and was refreshed everyday. Also our suites had microwaves. The security around the hotel was present and I always felt safe even at night. This hotel had a lot of prestige and people were intrigued when I said we were staying there. This place has a good reputation in the community. Cons: There is an issue with cleanliness here. Rooms were not cleaned that well. I don't like to see evidences of last guests. So the sticky floors, hair in the bathroom and corners of doorways, and in the sheets were unacceptable. When I called someone was sent right away. I had the two bedroom city view suite and then the 2 bedroom oceanview suite. Both had issues with being clean. The marble floors were also tough for my kids when they were wet, they were very slippery and my son hit his head a few times from falling. Once the kids got used to the floors they didn't fall as much but there is no carpet in the rooms. The views are pretty at this location. Another con is there is no beach access. When I called down to ask about the beach I was told that the hotel advised the guests not to even go there. Well with a 3 year old not going to the beach was not an option for me. I went down there anyways and found out you could rent chairs at the Renaissance for 5 dollars. We later went back up to the pool area. The main pool was small but my children swam. They were literally the only children at the pool and I felt like I was disturbing the other adults with their playing. It was the same in the restaurants my kids were the only ones in there and we got some pretty nasty looks from the other guests. The hotel staff was nice however this is just not the place for small children. Another thing that concerned me was a lack of attention from the Bellmen outside. I stayed there for 6 days and only 1 time did I have the door opened for me. When we got out of the taxi or Uber we took our own bags out of the car and I would get the door for my husband as he pushed the suitcases or bags into the hotel. This wasn't our typical experience so I am writing it about it. I think for the prices I paid during trip I expected more but overall I can see why other people really enjoy this place. It's just not for me.

As Amex Platinum members we received an upgrade to one of their ocean facing 1 bedroom suites. Before making the reservation we actually asked Amex Travel to inquire on the possibility of the upgrade. The hotel said there was a good chance and sure enough we got it! We absolutely loved our 4 night stay there and still talk about how amazing it was. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The entire place is clean. We used the Spa one day and WOW it was amazing! The gym has plenty of workout equipment. We used the treadmill and elliptical. During our stay we needed to do some business and used one of their business rooms. Printer worked too. The wifi worked great and was fast enough for video streaming. Overall we'd definitely recommend this place to anyone.

And I did. I rode out hurricane Maria in this hotel. I can not say enough about how wonderful the staff were. They were well prepared. They executed their plan flawlessly from our perspective. If there were any problems, and I'm sure there were some, they were not obvious to us. They kept us as comfortable as a person can be in a parking garage on a pool chaise lounge with a towel and pillows while a major hurricane rages outside. They kept us fed with a buffet breakfast and lunch during the hurricane. As far as I am concerned, they went above and beyond the call of duty. They cared for their staff who's homes were destroyed and they took care of their clients. Ben Tutt, the hotel manager, managed the event just like he would a wedding or other conference event but there was so much more at stake on this one. I would stay here again in a heartbeat but perhaps I will wait a bit before returning.

We came to PR after hurricane Maria because my brother was getting married. We had booked at the Vanderbilt, and we were lucky they were open and functioning so we were able to stay there. Against all odds the hotel was functioning beautifully. Our room was gorgeous - and ocean room suite. Tacos and Tequila, delicious! Overwhelmed, but I get it. But the best of all was that the service was flawless. I travel a lot and as I get older i appreciate good service more and more. The Vanderbilt exceeded expectations. Cant wait to go back.

This is a different type of review . I had been deployed to Puerto Rico prior to Hurricane Maria in September 2017. When my team arrived we were taken to the Condado Vanderbilt. I was one of the few Hurricane resistant hotels in San Juan. I can not say enough about the hotel its staff and manager. Imagine an impending cat 5 storm heading for you... despite this the staff went above and beyond to make sure that we had all the services we needed. The food was excellent and the accommodations excellent. We were in and out prior to the storm working and when we returned after each mission the staff was always there to meet us and make sue we were all set. As the storm approached . the hotel staff ramped up preparing the building and its staff for the storm. The Manager BenTutt. was the consummate professional. His concern for his staff and guests was unsurpassed. His attention to detail was impeccable, They had prepared a safe shelter for all so that when the strongest part of the storm hit at 4 Am we were all in the shelter below ground. When we arrived they had prepared a buffet breakfast and kept us supplied all day with food and water. Ben had met with guests several times prior to the storm so that we were well aware of the plan . When it was safe to do so we were allowed back to our rooms. Although the hotel suffered some damage some rooms were moved , and the clean up started . after several days the majority of the clean up was complete and people were back at work. Several of the hotel employees lost everything during the storm. Ben supplied room and food for for the employees and their families. He also had gasoline delivered to the hotel for employee cars so they could get to their homes. I have never been to Puerto Rico before but plan to return when off duty and will with out a doubt stay at the Vanderbilt. Thank you Ben Tutt and staff of The Vanderbuilt. for a safe and memorable experience .
