Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, part of the Legend collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts in 1919, it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Liven up the senses with a morning walk on the beach. Take a taxi to Old San Juan, a 400-year-old enclave still buzzing with life. Explore the old forts of the northern "walled city" and duck into boutiques all the way to the piers. Savor a four-course prix fixe meal of local, organic cuisine at 1919, pairing an Oregon pinot gris and wild salmon confit with spring vegetable pistou.

My husband and I arrived 1/15/18 to celebrate our honeymoon for the week at another local condominium. Upon arrival we found there was no central air, no wifi, elevator was out of order, and the room was not as advertised, although we were told from the owner that this condominium was up and running despite the effects of Maria when we booked. We left and were basically stuck in San Juan searching desperately for a place to stay for our honeymoon. We drove from hotel to hotel and made calls only to find most were 100% booked and others were subpar and damaged, but still were still charging extremely expensive rates. We arrived at the Vanderbilt and upon entering we were immediately astonished at its luxury and courteous staff. Exhausted and upset at our current circumstances, we were greeted by Javier at the front desk who not only listened to our horror story with sympathy, he also worked diligently to try to find accomadations for us. He looked on his computer for at minimum an hour as was able accomadate us with a rate that matched the accomadations. He searched patiently on his computer although he said it was a very difficult to find rooms in San Juan this week due to a festival being held this week. But he made it happen! And with a smile on his face. While awaiting our keys Rafeal from the front desk rushed to bring us champagne while we waited, and also helped offered some humor to lighten our moods. He helped ensure we were comfortable, as well as made sure the accomadations booked were satisfactory. Next wr were greeted with a smile by Wilfredo who escorted us to our room, another friendly staff member who sympathized with our mishap, and let us know we were in the right place and to let him know if we needed him for anything to not hesistate to ask. I am not even halfway through my vacation and had to write a review immediately to show my appreciation. The premises is beyond gorgeous with endless amenities that we haven't even got a chance to explore them all. Due to the exceptional customer service of the staff of the Vanderbilt and the beauty of the resort we have forgotten about our horrible experience with the other facility. Everytime we leave the room we come back to a clean room without even a request. The first day we came back to a complimentary bottle of champagne with a very nice note from Wilfredo that made us smile and remind us why we our celebrate our marriage! Thank you everyone for your kindness and I will be doing another review once we leave, because I have only skimmed the service in this review because I know there will be more exceptional experiences at the Vanderbilt!

My wife and I were in Puerto Rico for a wedding which had the reception in this hotel. Beautiful hotel and amenities. Rooms are very pretty and service was very nice. The only negative was our rooms were in the original hotel and they were very dark inside.

My family stayed at Vanderbilt for 5 nights. It is one of the few luxury hotels that is nearly back to normal operation after hurricane Maria. The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurants are nice and we ate at all 3 of them. Our room was clean and the complimentary mini bar was a bonus (alcohol not included). We also did a tour to the bioluminescent bay in the southern side of Puerto Rico. It was relatively expensive but a great experience.

San Juan is up and running though not all businesses, hotels, and restaurants are open. The countryside is another story. The Vanderbilt is clean, comfortable, friendly, welcoming, and the staff is helpful. The bars were hopping. We had a corner room with views of the ocean and street. Bathroom large and well appointed with a step in shower. Room had a coffee maker, table, chairs, flat screen TV, Queen size bed was very comfortable. Treats at the mini bar were complimentary. The alcohol was not though. A taxi to Old San Juan cost $16 in one direction and $17 in the other. For a great meal in Old San Juan, try Marmalade. Some might call Marmalade pricey, but it is a fine dining experience.. Just a short walk from the hotel, try Pannes and Oceana. Down the same street you will find a CVS and Walgreens where you can buy beer, wine, and alcohol.

Stayed here for 2 nights prior to a Disney Cruise and wished we didn't have to leave. We were fortunate to be upgraded to the Presidential suite that seemed bugger than our 2 story house at home. Staff was super friendly and helpful without being too in your face. Enjoyed Tacos and Tequila restaurant onsite. There are many other restaurants within walking distance. It is in great shape for guests after Maria.
