Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in 1919, it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Liven up the senses with a morning walk on the beach. Take a taxi to Old San Juan, a 400-year-old enclave still buzzing with life. Explore the old forts of the northern "walled city" and duck into boutiques all the way to the piers. Savor a four-course prix fixe meal of local, organic cuisine at 1919, pairing an Oregon pinot gris and wild salmon confit with spring vegetable pistou.

My husband, 3 other couple & I found ourselves stranded in San Juan after a 7 day cruise when our flight home was cancelled because of hurricane Irma. Much of Puerto Rico was without power, many hotels were already full and the earliest available flight was FOUR DAYS away! When I called the Condado Vanderbilt and was informed that they had rooms available I was relieved. When our group arrived at the hotel, our jaws dropped. Our bags were collected, we were ushered into the gorgeous lobby & handed glasses of champagne. Our rooms were not ready so we enjoyed a tasty lunch at the pool restaurant. The food was good but took about 20 minutes to arrive. Our room was fantastic! It was spacious enough for 4 adults and a week's worth of luggage. (yes, we shared our room with another couple to keep our costs down since this was an unexpected additional expense at the end of an expensive vacation) The beds are comfy, the rooms are spotless and everything in the minibar EXCEPT the booze is FREE! Yes, free bottled water, chips, candy, soda... The staff was attentive, friendly and helpful. The pools (4 of them) were beautiful with perfect water temperature. Our friends really enjoyed the hot tub and adult pool. This is definitely a hotel that we would stay at again!

PROS: Everything! I've never been treated so well before. This hotel is absolutely amazing! We were greeted with glasses of champagne. The bellhop gave us a tour of the hotel on our way to the room. He was very friendly and informative. We stayed in the Biltmore ocean view suite on the 8th floor (definitely request this room) which comes with butler service. The room was amazing! Great views and spacious! The Butlers were all very helpful. They upgraded us to a larger suite on the 9th floor (I think it's called the Commodore) free of charge when the room attendant noticed a leak in the shower. This room was also amazing with two balconies- 1 overlooking the beach and city & the 2nd overlooking the ocean. To our surprise they transferred all our belongings into the new room, and had a bottle of champagne waiting for us when returned. All the snacks and water were ours to enjoy. The drinks at the poolside bar were well worth the price and very tasty. We did not use the wifi, but it is available throughout the hotel. Beach access was a short walk from the hotel. The beach attendant was very helpful. She dressed our chairs and set up an umbrella and table for us. I am in love with this hotel! I cannot wait to return. They are the epitome of 5 star service! I was very sad to leave. Thank you all for everything! Cons: Very minor...I wish the Biltomore had a full length mirror. That is all LOL

An absolutely stunning hotel, 5 Stars. Staff are very helpful and friendly, a delightful bunch. Was not really impressed with the buffet breakfast, could do with more variety, a more international touch would compliment the price charged, such a limited choice, was the same food all week. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, 2 Queen beds and ample storage space for those who like to unpack fully. We went when hurricane Irma was to hit the island full force, may I thank the staff and management for there hard work and efforts for making us feel safe and informed at all times very efficient and effective. I would recommend the 1919 restaurant within the hotel, this is a gem and the food is exceptionally well prepared and presented, and the taste was out of this world, Chefs Table 5 Stars. Best hotel in the Condado area lots to do locally bars and other hotels nearby. The local bank is walking distance and they change most currencies, proof of ID and photographic evidence to be taken. Definitely a place I will visit again with my family.

This is truly an excellent hotel. It is rated 5 stars by US News. There are multiple medium to small-sized pools in this hotel. There is an adult-only area with a pool and jacuzzi. There are stations with water, bug spray, and sunscreen by the pools. You never need to worry about finding a spot to sun bathe, because there are so many chaise lounges. It is family and pet-friendly. I stayed here a few days after Hurricane Irma hit, so many people from more devastated areas took refuge here with there pets. The service is impeccable. My favorite part is the "turn down" time. At the end of the day, housekeeping comes in and places a small box of chocolates/candies on your nightstand, dim the lights, and place slippers by your bedside. All the restaurants are delish. I love the breakfast buffet at Ola. Other amenities including the gym and spa are also amazing. You get an amazing view of the pool and palm trees from the gym. The spa has a great "rain forest" shower, sauna and steam room.

When I arrive at the airport I was worried that I wouldn't get an early check in and I arrived at the hotel at 12:20pm. When I got to the front door you can immediately feel the service is going to be impeccable. I was asked if I wanted a welcome champagne and didn't mind at all. I was also told my suite was available. The suite came with a personal butler that responds to any of your needs from booking to reserving to packing your suitcase if you are in a crunch of time. If you want a great experience I would recommend book a suite instead of a standard room. You won't regret it ! Because I sure didn't even though it burned a hole on my credit card. Also the strange thing was the incidental charge was $200 a night. I tried one of their restaurants Taco & Tequila and the food was great but the vibe from the employees was what got to me. They were awesome once again. The entire space itself is beautiful and large with two separate pools on each side. One for anyone and the other is an adult pool and jacuzzi. The beach was just walking distance. La Concha which is next door is their family hotel. They also have a changing room that you can reserve to shower and change if you want to head to the beach after check out and pre boarding to your airport. I will definitely come back and recommend this to everyone ! Kevin RM 768
