Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, part of the Legend collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts in 1919, it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Liven up the senses with a morning walk on the beach. Take a taxi to Old San Juan, a 400-year-old enclave still buzzing with life. Explore the old forts of the northern "walled city" and duck into boutiques all the way to the piers. Savor a four-course prix fixe meal of local, organic cuisine at 1919, pairing an Oregon pinot gris and wild salmon confit with spring vegetable pistou.

The Vanderbilt screams high quality as soon as you pull up to the valet. You are greeted with a friendly representative and they provide you with a cold bottle water on a fancy tray. Unlike most other properties in Condado, the Vanderbilt is nice and quiet. As a business traveler, I appreciate that I can speak on my cell phone without loud music blasting. The property is stunning. The room is stunning as well. Very nice touches can be found everywhere. It would be hard to think anyone would not enjoy this property.

We stayed at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel for two nights as part of a pre-cruise stay. First impressions were simply put, amazing. The entire staff are very kind and professional in every way, check in was seamless. We had a tower room on the 12th floor over looking the strip and a great view of the ocean and beaches. The room was large and very well appointed, large oversized shower and double sinks with lots of storage if staying for a few days. The king bed was very comfortable. There is an in room safe, small refrigerator and a pod type espresso maker. There was also a large private balcony which was nice to sit outside in the morning for a coffee. There is a large adults only hot tub and pool on the one side of the hotel and a large family pool and a separate infinity pool over looking the ocean on the opposite side. We didn't go to the beach although we could see many people using there. There are numerous good restaurants in the area as well as two Starbucks for your morning coffee, everything is close walking distance from the hotel including a CVS and Walgreen's in case you forgot something at home. I would not hesitate in the least recommending this hotel to anyone and when I return to this area in the future will not look forward to staying here again.

Just spent 3-nights in a 1-bedroom suite of the East wing of this ocean-facing hotel with excellent facilities - heated swimming pools, spa, restaurants, bars, etc. Echos of the era of big resort style hotels. My suite was made up of a living area, bedroom and ensuite bathroom. All ample sized spaces with all the usual trappings of a 5-Star accommodation - lovely linen, adequate towels, bath robes, stocked bar fridge, ample lighting, toilet amenities, etc. Bathroom was equipped with tub and shower (overhead shower head was a nice feature). Housekeeping and cleaning was satisfactory and I'm sure needs would have been catered for with the added butler service. Friendly staff - this is the Caribbean. A few observations give rise to my title - a stained area of the carpet in the bedroom and a soiled towel amongst the fresh towels. The position of the wardrobe safe made access to it a bit awkward. Not sure why cutlery was not provided in the kitchenette. A genuine 5-Star must not leave you guessing :). All in all, the operations seem to have been well run from front desk to housekeeping - an impressive feat, shortly after the devastation of hurricane Maria.

Don't know how well this hotel did after the hurricane, but we stayed there the week before the storm hit. The hotel was beautiful and very clean - the staff was attentive and helpful. Our daughter and her fiancé accompanied us on this pre-cruise stay, so we splurged on a connecting suite that allowed us to use the same door to enter, but gave us each private residence. This corner room featured 2 balconies with beautiful ocean views - the kids room had a large balcony and ocean view as well. The beds were comfortable and the shower was amazing. Food in the restaurant was pricey but good, as were the drinks we had in the bar. Really good bartenders and very interesting art behind the bar - although, I'm not sure if it was the potent drinks or the art that kept talking for a couple of hours. I don't give 5 stars often - this place was a definite 5 for me!
