Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

When railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt built the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, part of the Legend collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts in 1919, it was Puerto Rico's only luxury hotel – President and Eleanor Roosevelt stayed here, part of a long list of notable guests. If the architecture looks familiar, it might be because the design firm also drew up the plans for New York's Grand Central Terminal. Graceful archways and sweeping staircases remain intact in this fully restored landmark, which presides over the Atlantic Ocean with two guestroom towers that are sumptuously modern.

Liven up the senses with a morning walk on the beach. Take a taxi to Old San Juan, a 400-year-old enclave still buzzing with life. Explore the old forts of the northern "walled city" and duck into boutiques all the way to the piers. Savor a four-course prix fixe meal of local, organic cuisine at 1919, pairing an Oregon pinot gris and wild salmon confit with spring vegetable pistou.

Stayed here before Hurricane Maria. The people of Puerto Rico are so nice, the staff was amazing, the food and fresh juices, the beach, the pool. Thank you Derril and Manuel you guys were my favorite in the hotel. The beach also has servers that set up your chair and umbrella and were available for drink and food service. Thank you Maha also for going Above and Beyond for me and my friends at the beach. We mostly drank rum drinks which were all really good. Taco's & Tequila was amazing!!! Overall- wonderful and relaxing stay. A+++

Pros: ¬†A great experience Cons: ¬† Can‚Äôt think of many. Tobacco stench in the indoor-outdoor bar Ratings: - ¬†¬†Overall: ¬† ¬† 5 - ¬†¬†Room Quality: ¬† ¬† ¬† 5 - ¬†¬†Room Comfort: ¬† ¬† 5 - ¬†¬†Room Atmosphere: ¬† ¬† ¬†5 - ¬†¬†Interior of the Building: ¬† ¬† ¬†5 - ¬† Restaurants: ¬†5 - ¬†¬†Location: ¬† ¬† 5 - ¬†¬†Outside Appearance: ¬† ¬† 5 - ¬†¬†Front Desk: ¬† ¬† 5 - ¬†¬†Value: ¬† ¬† 5 My wife and I needed a nice hotel to stay in San Juan the day before leaving the island on a cruise. After much research, we decided on the Condado Vanderbilt. We were not disappointed in any respect. - ¬† Location: Central. Facing the ocean between the airport to the east and Old Town San Juan to the west. The Vanderbilt offers good access to the hotels, restaurants and shops on Ashford Avenue, although when we visited in early November 2017, many places were recovering from the wrath of hurricanes Irma and Maria. However, there were few signs of wear and tear on our hotel. - ¬† Exterior: Beautiful. The Vanderbilt has two 11 story towers separated by a 3 story hacienda style building. Caribbean white stucco with reddish tile roofs appearing as if newly painted or washed. It‚Äôs a stunning structure. - ¬†¬†Room: ¬†Gorgeous. Since it was our 15th wedding anniversary, we were upgraded from a ‚ÄúTower View‚ÄĚ room to a ‚ÄúCommodore Suite‚ÄĚ with about 600 square feet on the 10th no extra charge. It was unreal. Furnishings were top-of-the-line, yet understated. Wi-fi reception was free and clear. State-of-the-art TVs delivered 50-60 channels. The king size bed was luxurious. Our¬†bathroom, or shall I say bathrooms, ¬†were spacious, well stocked and extremely clean. The views from our wraparound patios were stunning. No expense seemed to be spared. If not heaven on earth, at least it was found on the 10th floor of the west tower. - ¬†¬†Reception: Excellent. Both check-in and check-out were fast, friendly and without fuss. Everyone from the front desk to the guys who helped with baggage was fine. A special thanks to Derrill who regaled us with funny stories while loading luggage and hailing a taxi to the ship. - ¬† Restaurants: Outstanding. Upon arrival at midday on a Sunday, we stopped for lunch at the Ola Bistro. Although they were in the midst of a buffet brunch, we chose several separate items off the menu. Everything we ate was great and everything on the plates of other patrons looked mighty fine. Since many of the kids in attendance dressed in their Sunday best, it appears Ola is a destination for brunch in San Juan. Since lunch was so good, we returned for dinner and breakfast the following morning. Food and service were again top notch. And Ola is not even the flagship restaurant of the Vanderbilt! - ¬†¬†Price and Value: ¬†Exceptional. Granted we got special treatment and just skimmed the surface of amenities at this resort-like hotel, but even if we stayed in the room originally booked I‚Äôd rave about the experience. Although the hotel did not seem crowded, we learned it was full due to space provided for employees of FEMA and other US Government agencies helping in the aftermath of 2 hurricanes. Would we stay at the Condado Vanderbilt again? Heck yes! It‚Äôs the first place I‚Äôd consider on a return trip to Puerto Rico.

I go to PR about 5 times a year on business I always bring my kids and mom during the stay. Normally I stay at the Stellaris but they weren't taking reservations at this moment. I was extremely hesitant to come because I have a 3 and 1 year old and this is obviously a hotel for adults. Pros: During a time when the island is devastated the Vanderbilt had all the amenities and services 100 percent running. Location is perfect, CVS down the street, Uber service close by, and restaurants around. Staff friendly to myself and children. TV and wifi were complementary, room service was pretty quick and food was tasty. I loved the pancakes for breakfast and chicken in the evening. Rooms were spacious and the shower and bathtub was appreciated in my suite. The minibar was cool and was refreshed everyday. Also our suites had microwaves. The security around the hotel was present and I always felt safe even at night. This hotel had a lot of prestige and people were intrigued when I said we were staying there. This place has a good reputation in the community. Cons: There is an issue with cleanliness here. Rooms were not cleaned that well. I don't like to see evidences of last guests. So the sticky floors, hair in the bathroom and corners of doorways, and in the sheets were unacceptable. When I called someone was sent right away. I had the two bedroom city view suite and then the 2 bedroom oceanview suite. Both had issues with being clean. The marble floors were also tough for my kids when they were wet, they were very slippery and my son hit his head a few times from falling. Once the kids got used to the floors they didn't fall as much but there is no carpet in the rooms. The views are pretty at this location. Another con is there is no beach access. When I called down to ask about the beach I was told that the hotel advised the guests not to even go there. Well with a 3 year old not going to the beach was not an option for me. I went down there anyways and found out you could rent chairs at the Renaissance for 5 dollars. We later went back up to the pool area. The main pool was small but my children swam. They were literally the only children at the pool and I felt like I was disturbing the other adults with their playing. It was the same in the restaurants my kids were the only ones in there and we got some pretty nasty looks from the other guests. The hotel staff was nice however this is just not the place for small children. Another thing that concerned me was a lack of attention from the Bellmen outside. I stayed there for 6 days and only 1 time did I have the door opened for me. When we got out of the taxi or Uber we took our own bags out of the car and I would get the door for my husband as he pushed the suitcases or bags into the hotel. This wasn't our typical experience so I am writing it about it. I think for the prices I paid during trip I expected more but overall I can see why other people really enjoy this place. It's just not for me.

As Amex Platinum members we received an upgrade to one of their ocean facing 1 bedroom suites. Before making the reservation we actually asked Amex Travel to inquire on the possibility of the upgrade. The hotel said there was a good chance and sure enough we got it! We absolutely loved our 4 night stay there and still talk about how amazing it was. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The entire place is clean. We used the Spa one day and WOW it was amazing! The gym has plenty of workout equipment. We used the treadmill and elliptical. During our stay we needed to do some business and used one of their business rooms. Printer worked too. The wifi worked great and was fast enough for video streaming. Overall we'd definitely recommend this place to anyone.

And I did. I rode out hurricane Maria in this hotel. I can not say enough about how wonderful the staff were. They were well prepared. They executed their plan flawlessly from our perspective. If there were any problems, and I'm sure there were some, they were not obvious to us. They kept us as comfortable as a person can be in a parking garage on a pool chaise lounge with a towel and pillows while a major hurricane rages outside. They kept us fed with a buffet breakfast and lunch during the hurricane. As far as I am concerned, they went above and beyond the call of duty. They cared for their staff who's homes were destroyed and they took care of their clients. Ben Tutt, the hotel manager, managed the event just like he would a wedding or other conference event but there was so much more at stake on this one. I would stay here again in a heartbeat but perhaps I will wait a bit before returning.
