Dos Casas in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Imagine lounging on a plush chaise, the morning air swirling through the trees, and the aroma of fresh chilaquiles enveloping your world. With this you may come close to picturing the splendor of San Miguel de Allende's Dos Casas luxury boutique hotel. Located in the center of a city constructed on a mile-high mesa, Dos Casas combines an earthy comfort with the grandeur one can only feel watching the sun rise slowly from high above beautiful central Mexico. The seven rooms of this intimate property artfully combine the post-modern, minimalist, and classically ornate to create a functionally beautiful, yet comfortably homey environment. Guests can delve further into their own experiences with a quiet night spent next to a private fireplace, or an in-room massage and spa treatment.

Immerse yourself in the spectacular views and mild climate while you sample some light snacks and fine wines on the rooftop terrace bar. Enjoy a complete meal in the bistro, featuring a menu that changes daily with the chef's prerogative. If you prefer a little activity, stroll through the quiet cobblestone streets to the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, a must-see neogothic cathedral constructed, unusually, of pink granite. For a more romantic evening, or a day trip for family fun, enjoy one of three natural thermal pools located only a few kilometers northwest of the city. For those guests of Dos Casas who prefer a more adventurous stay, experience the true countryside on horseback, or take in a panoramic view from the skies with a ride in a hot air balloon. Whichever vacation experience you choose, San Miguel de Allende will surely delight your senses, and Dos Casas will provide the amazing stay for which you were searching.

I know why now it’s rated as one of the best hotels in Mexico. The rooms are spacious and nicely done. The staff is wonderful and attentive to all your needs and questions. Plus they have a wonderful restaurant. One of the top restaurants in San Miguel. I highly recommend staying at Dos Casa’s on your trip to San Miguel.

We stayed 3 nights for New Year and booked 9 suites since we were a large group. Very clean, quiet and homey, the definition for me of what a boutique hotel is like. Felt right at home and the staff was excellent; attentive, respectful, helpful, and went out of their way to make us feel good at the hotel and in San Miguel. Booked our whole trip through their concierge Deborah and have to say that you rarely find a more helpful and devoted concierge, can't say enough good things about her. We got to our room to find an itinerary of all our activities during our stay, including transportation to and from Mexico City. Breakfast was included in our package and was far from normal. Excellent and consistent every day, from granola, yogurt and berry sorbet, to chilaquiles and omelettes. Aperi, their restaurant, for us, is #1 in San Miguel, which we have visited 5 times in the past 2 years, and what I like the most is their respect for guests. Service is early so that there is no noise at the hotel at late hours. Spa is very very good as well and only takes 2 guests at a time so very personal attention.

We stayed 3 nights at the Dos Casas Hotel in San Miguel. We booked a signature suite, but on the second night, we were upgraded to the Mountain View Suite, a much better room (although we were quite satisfied with our first room). I read another review that referred to some noise... our room couldn't have been quieter. In our first room, one of the windows was stuck open, and it was rather noisy, but they fixed that right away. We had a bathroom that featured a shower and tub with a retractable roof, one of the nicest features I've ever had in a hotel room. Our private deck had incredible views and a hot tub. The decor and details were top notch... in our room, the door to the bathroom looked like a cabinet door in line with other cabinets in the room... making the door look like a secret door. Such a nice touch. The 5 course tasting breakfast was fantastic!

Beautiful hotel and I can sum it up fairly quickly. 1. Stayed in Room 10. High style, high noise. You hear EVERYTHING. The restaurant especially. You can also smell the food, which was great, but it lasted for hours. I heard the people above me doing things I can't discuss here very late. But, good for them, right? Stay in a top level room. 2. House cleaners were spotless. 3. Tried to get dinner reservations twice, never got the call I was promised. 4. Asked for bottled water a few times, never got it. Most places in Mexico shower you with bottled water. Not here. 5. Parking. Park at the door, they will take it and greet you. There is no parking area. 6. I felt the check in and check out was a little impersonal. It was all business. I have stayed in several other places and typically they make you feel very welcome. Its paperwork here. Nice hotel, but there are better, so do your research.

Quick Overview: Very quaint, clean, and comfortable hotel with a friendly staff (most of whom speak English) and a central location. Room: My wife and I really enjoyed our cozy and quite clean room. The bed was firm, but we slept wonderfully. The star of the show was that we had a little outdoor sitting area with stairs leading up to our own private roof-top patio (totally awesome). Bathroom was huge and featured a steam shower. We had plenty of closet space, the internet speed was good, and the mini bar / fridge was well stocked. Spa: Wife did a 75 min massage and said it was one of the best she's had. She loved the products and said the quality of the massage was amazing (saying she's picky about her massages and spa treatments would be a grand understatement so this is really saying something coming from her). Food: We stayed for 3 nights and ate breakfast each morning in the restaurant. The food was great, the service was so friendly and accommodating, and the setting couldn't have been more relaxing. We loved the salsa verde! I do have to mention that on the first day of our stay, while we were having some cocktails and snacks during the early afternoon with friends, we were informed that the kitchen closes at 3 until dinner time, but that we could come back and eat dinner then. Per instruction, we came back and wanted to eat dinner around 6:15 pm but were informed that this was not an option because they were booked solid. Apparently we needed a reservation, as they had been booked for the past week. At this time, literally no one was sitting in the restaurant, and come to find out they didn't have reservations until 8 pm. Needless to say, I was able to get us in for a quick dinner with the promise that we'd be done by 8. Honestly, this kind of irritated me because we could have been told earlier that 1. we would need a reservation (I guess I could have asked, but still) 2. they were full for dinner (if you want to count 8 pm reservations as full). After all this, as much as I hate to say it, I found the dinner menu to be disappointing. Given, I had just left a happy hour and was wanting some tacos... if you're wanting traditional Mexican food this is not the place to get it. Due Praise: Rarely does housekeeping get the praise they deserve, as they are kind of the unsung heroes behind the scenes, but in this case I must say that they were responsible for a great deal of our satisfaction during our stay. They were quick, efficient, and truly did a magical job on our room during our daily cleaning and turndown. I only had one encounter with the ladies when I showed up to our room while they were cleaning, but they were so sweet and accommodating. Our room was spotless (I have a habit of noticing the little things, and truthfully I can't say I found one thing they missed - great job)! To Note: This is not the most quiet hotel. Noise from the restaurant can easily be heard in the bedrooms. There are church bells that you can hear starting at least by 8 am, though I didn't find them to be of much annoyance. You can hear street noise and music from passing cars (a high volume of passing cars have their stereos turned up). Those clean floors you enjoy just outside your room, yea those are cleaned somewhere around 8 am as well (this is definitely a rise and shine type of hotel- which isn't necessarily a bad thing). The door on our room used an actual key, and without actually locking said door it was known to open on its own. And finally, I developed a love/hate relationship with the wall air-conditioning unit. It was very effective at times, slightly effective during sleeping hours, and overall kind of complicated. By the 3rd night I was a professional and had all the kinks figured out. Also, it might not hurt to have any airport transfers scheduled before your trip, as several people in our party, ourselves included, had some miscommunication resulting in delays. Final Thoughts: Please don't let the above paragraph scare you away, as we really liked this property and would definitely consider staying here again upon any return trips to the city. I just call it like I see it.
