Reviews for La Puertecita Boutique Hotel

Charming, quiet; accidentally Wes Anderson :-)

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed February 19, 2021

What a sweet spot! There were several pandemic-related modifications in place when we stayed at the hotel (the restaurant and pools were closed, for example) but that did not detract from its charm. The hotel is a rambling series of quaint buildings connected by charming, winding paths and secret corners. We were there for three nights and every day I stumbled across some new, delightful aspect of the property. The rooms are well-appointed and beautifully decorated. I stayed in a Deluxe room with a king bed and my bathroom was absolutely adorable, including a jacuzzi tub - perfect for soaking sore feet after a long day of sightseeing. Everything is immaculately cleaned. From what I could see, all the rooms had some sort of terrace or private access to the outdoors. There are so many sweet patio areas around the property that you will have no problem finding a quiet, scenic spot to relax outside. The staff are friendly and accommodating and everyone worked hard to connect with us in English. The location will work for some, but not for others: the hotel is perched on the side of hill outside the central zone, but this was a plus for us. The neighbourhood is quiet and our sleep was undisturbed by traffic or street noise. At the same time, everything we wanted to see was no more than a 15-minute walk away, making the hotel both convenient to and removed from the hubbub. Be prepared for a steep walk uphill from town to get back to the hotel. It's short but vertical! We would definitely recommend this hotel. Please support them.

Worth the Hike

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed February 16, 2020

This hotel is a bit of an uphill hike from the central area, but we thought it was worth it. Rooms in the old colonial buildings downtown tend to be dark, but our room was bright and sunny (see pic) which you will appreciate in winter months in SMA. It was also very quiet, whereas downtown you just can't avoid the music from all those wonderful rooftop bars. La Puertacita is quite large with a variety rooms from different eras, so if you aren't completely pleased with the first they show you, ask to see something different. Our room (Los Pinchones) was on the top floor above the reception, and we loved it. It had a large, bright bathroom with an enormous tub, in which we spent a romantic evening. Service was very good. It's an easy walk from there to the botanical garden (El Charco del Inginero).

Great Hotel for Day of the Dead.

We loved this hotel. The grounds are like a garden and it was wonderful to be away from the noise. For a $3 dollar cab ride we experienced all the festivities and quiet at the end of the day. Our rooms were great. Living and dining room with separate bedroom and bath. The hotel is older and so a few quirks. Good value and would stay again. Oh no ADA. Here. Many steps but if you are up for them it’s worth it.

An Enchanting Hotel in the Hills Above El Centro Historico in San Miguel de Allende

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed May 7, 2019

There are many enchanting, boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende (SMA). I extensively researched my hotel selection for a recent trip to SMA. I selected La Puertecita based on other reviews, photos, location, and value. The hotel scores well on all of the metrics. My room was an upgraded casita or apartment ("El Jardin") in the lower level of the hotel property, with a lovely patio. March is the peak of spring in the Central Highlands of Guanajuato and Queretero States in Mexico: The jacarandas and bougainvilleas were in full spectacular bloom. The gardens of La Puertecita have copious amounts of these flowering trees and vines. The room itself was very pleasant, with lovely tilework, and a comfortable furniture. Original local artwork decorated the walls. The value was outstanding for a AAA 4-Diamond property, especially compared to such establishment pricing in the desert Southwest of the U.S. The neighborhood is also lovely and quiet, as noted by other reviewers, albeit a little isolated. Note that the hotel restaurant (which I reviewed separately) is only open for breakfast or lunch. The next nearest restaurant for dinner is nearly 1 km downhill. Like much of SMA, the roads are all paved with cobblestones which make for a challenging walk from La Puertecita to the pedestrian center of SMA. The walk is only 1 km or less, but due to the steep hills, it is a bona fide workout. Bring comfortable walking shoes and be aware that the altitude makes any strenuous activity more difficult. The alternative is to take taxis or Ubers into the center, and they are very affordable.

Top of the line standard room

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed February 23, 2019

I needed a last-minute hotel near my friend's home in Los Balconces so I chose La Puertecita. The first night, I stayed in a standard room in the actual old house. Let's just say I wasn't comfortable in this room (the red color, the vibe, I don't know, just wasn't feeling it). The next day, I requested a different standard room. The staff was very accommodating and I was moved to the Carmin room, which I stayed in (and very much enjoyed) for the next 4 nights. The rooms were exceptionally clean. I felt safe - the hotel is gated and has 24 hour video surveillance. The ambiance is wonderful. This hotel is nestled at the edge of a canyon in a quiet area with two pools, fountains and lush grounds. If you are seeking peace and relaxation from the busy, noisy town, this place is perfection! Google Translate was extremely helpful, as only one staff member was fluent in English but everyone was willing to work together and I very much appreciated that. Walking to/from the hotel during the day is a great workout and safe but I would recommend a taxi at night. Only a 6-8min walk to the town and the street (Santo Domingo/Correo) runs directly into the Parroquia. I returned to my hotel room every night around 10p - The staff left the lights on and a heater running for me. Really, how great is that to know you're being looked after?! I truly appreciated this hotel and would come back here again.
