We travelled to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles, and planned on staying at the El Encanto, but the restaurant service was so poor that we left and stayed at Bacara. The hostess sat us at a table with full sun, when I asked for a different table ten feet away with an umbrella set up, she replied, “I can’t guarantee shade”. I then found out why, as we were sitting down a staff member lowered the umbrella, I asked if we could keep the umbrella up, and was told, “No we are setting up for dinner”. She turned and walked away, it was 3:30, the sunset was in 2.5 hours, so it seemed odd. I guess at that point I should not have expected much, but I thought maybe they would take our order, but no, what little staff they had was setting up placemats and talking to one another. I left our table and ordered a drink, after 30 mins and still no waitress, we left hungry... thankfully Bacara took care of us. The El Encanto grounds are beautiful and we ran into friends who were staying at the hotel who mentioned that the rooms are fantastic, they also mentioned bad service at the restaurant (as did others in the valet line).

NOTE: I was not a guest at this hotel, so this review pertains only to the special events facilities. Located on a very high hill, the Belmond El Encanto (Spanish for “charmed”) is a luxury boutique hotel overlooking downtown Santa Barbara with sweeping ocean views. With its Spanish colonial-style bungalows set among tree-lined grounds filled with flower gardens, the property manages to capture a serene elegance without resorting to gaudy opulence. We were here to attend a wedding, which was conducted at their picturesque arbor and lily pond. A wooden bridge was constructed over the pond for the bridal party’s processional and recessional, and enough chairs to comfortably accommodate the 150 guests (not counting the turtles and koi in the pond) were placed at each side of the pond. It was a lovely setting for the wedding ceremony. The reception was held at their Riviera ballroom, a large room with a heated outdoor patio. The sound system worked well, the dinner was beautifully presented and delicious, the desserts were decadent and the service staff was extremely professional. This is certainly not the sort of wedding spot for those who are trying to save money on the venue, but if you’re fortunate enough to have a generous budget the Belmond El Encanto is a location that should be on your list to consider.

Our first night here was a year ago, paying almost $900 per night, and to summarize, it wasn't the best room/or/experience. We were then invited to spend another night (free of charge) and was given an upgraded room with wine, dessert, and champagne. Definitely made me feel welcomed and made the occasion even more special. Of course to get these upgrades and extras from the first-time around, I was probably supposed to pay over $1200-$1300. Aside from this, I am very grateful and happy to return to this beautiful hotel. They did an amazing job and we are TRULY grateful and blessed. The staff here is professional, responsive, helpful, and very kind.

Review is long overdue- we stayed here for a weekend wedding. Has a great time- beautiful hotel. View from pool is amazing. Style of the hotel it great- cool and contempt- not stuffy- but still really nice. Rooms are all a little different in terms of lay out.

The hotel is fantastic but certainly not worthy of having the Belmond name to it. Having been to a few of the other Belmond properties around the world, the service and experience was just not up to scratch so it was slightly disappointing. The hotel grounds are stunning and worth a walk around! Most of the rooms are not in the main building and in apartments away from it; our room was perfectly fine, comfortable and a nice bathroom albeit boiling hot! The food was excellent, however service was really quite bad. It took almost 40 minutes to get our lunch and we were only 2 of around 10 people dining. When it did come it was the wrong order. Not much of an apology and the waiter seemed to be entirely clueless. The outside terrace however is stunning particularly at night, and the piano playing is a lovely touch. Service by the pool was also pretty poor - took a while for anyone to notice we existed and offer us towels, plus you can’t order food there only drinks. Had teenagers bombing into the pool too which is arguably just not on although more blame to the ignorant parents than the hotel itself! The staff at the front desk were very helpful, friendly and knowledgable about the area and gave us some good recommendations so it’s worth asking them what to do and where to go!
