Spare yourself the waste of money. The grounds are beautiful, but the service was so unbelievably terrible it really detracted from the experience. I had read other reviews complaining about the service, but figured we were mostly there to relax and enjoy the property anyway. I didn't realize how much the service would get in the way of even being able to do that. We arrived at 2:45, check-in is at 3. The man at the front desk told us the room would be ready in 15-20 minutes, so we take a little walk around, then come back. 3pm, we check and it's still not ready but we're again told it will be ready any moment, so we take a seat. Check again at 3:30 (no one has bothered to come update us themselves or say anything to us although we're sitting right there in the lobby) and it's still not ready. At 3:45 I ask to speak to a manager because we've now been waiting an hour. A manager named Emilio comes out and gives an insincere feeling apology, gives us an excuse that the hotel is very full right now in a way that felt incredibly disrespectful and inconsiderate of the fact that we've been waiting an hour without updates and it's way past check-in time for a very expensive hotel. I tell him that even if it's full, we should've had an update so that we could go do something else rather than just being told to wait so long. Finally at that point he offers to bring us a drink, which we did not even care about because we wanted to be able to actually relax and do something on our very short vacation. The manager had told us he'd come tell us when the room was ready but he never returned. Finally at 4:15 I get a text saying it's ready, an hour and half later and an hour and 15 minutes after check-in time. We go outside to see that our bags have been taken off the luggage cart and dumped on the ground, meaning both that our bags and my wrapped birthday gifts are now sitting in the dirt and that someone must have arrived after us and been taken to a room first. We planned this trip as a nice birthday getaway, and overall I felt extremely disrespected, brushed off, and like they wasted a lot of the little time we had there. Once I got back my mom called and told me she had called them and requested that they leave something for me in the room for my birthday and asked if I got it. No surprise that that never happened. We stayed in an AirBnb the next night and it was a much nicer experience.

I'm going to start off with--WOW! These cottages are handsome and exquisite. It was our first visit and from the time we got out of our car when we arrived to the time we got back in it to leave, we were treated with classic chivalry and respect. Lush grounds make for a beautiful backdrop for a romantic stroll, the sunset from the pool is stunning, and the outdoor comfortable dining was the frosting on the cake. Definitely, this is the place to celebrate a special occasion!

Having lived in Santa Barbara for over fifteen years it had been a dream of mine to stay at the El Encanto, our night there was everything I hoped it would be and more. Since this was a night away from our young kids my husband wanted to add some extra special surprises, with the creative help of Macy Weiser l was delighted with the many personal touches, After returning from a walk around the beautiful property with breathtaking views there was a bottle of champagne and the nicest cheese and chocolate spread I have ever enjoyed. When we got back from our dinner we were greeted with a romantic illuminated heart shaped candelabra on out front lawn. All of the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, we appreciated the bellman taking the time to highlight all of the features of our elegant room. We loved using the courtesy shuttle to take us to and from down town and being locals ourselves we could really tell how knowledgeable our driver was about the area. I whole heartedly recommend staying at the El Encanto to anyone visiting Santa Barbara or looking for the "staycation" of their dreams..........my husband and I are expecting our third in August

After going to 2 different beautiful weddings at this property i decided to stay over night on New Year's day. The resort setting is just beautiful with wonderful views of the city and ocean from the lobby, restaurant and pool area. The room was large and clean with a gorgeous bathroom. Also, the spa was excellent. The service however was just awful in the restaurant. The hostess who sat us was just lovely but couldn't seem to find our waiter. After 10 minutes she came back and took our drink order in the meantime.. Throughout the evening we kept asking for our waiter.. The apologies seemed hollow and if just made for a less than special evening. We ended deciding to skip dinner because no one would turn on the additional heat lamp after asking 2 different people and waiting in the cold for 1/2 an a hour. When i went to check out there was a wait of 3 people ahead of me and i decided to just get in my car and call the manger to relay my experience. Of course, I got a voicemail and left my email and phone number. No one has bothered to respond. I have stayed at The Four Seasons Biltmore many times and have never had anything but exceptional service. I don't see how El Encanto expects to compete with this disappointing service.

We stayed for two nights as a couple in early October 2017. I have somewhat mixed feelings about Belmond El Encanto. On one hand, the property is very beautiful, the grounds well-maintained and the cottages private and peaceful. It is definitely well-suited to couples looking to relax, but as first-time visitors to Santa Barbara wanting to explore the town, it wasn't quite what we were looking for (our fault due to poor research). We arrived roughly an hour after check-in to find out that we had been upgraded (wonderful), but that our room was not ready and needed to be inspected. We were assured by the man on the front desk that it would only take a few minutes and were offered a seat in the lounge and given a bottle of water whilst we waited. Sadly, close to half an hour went by before anybody came to escort us to the room and we were beginning to feel as though we had been forgotten about. Eventually, the same man (whom I presume was concierge) came to escort us and took us outside. I believe he was waiting for one of the valets to show us to our room as we seemed to be stood loitering whilst he conversed with them, before eventually relenting "oh well I'll just show them instead." Though he was polite, I felt that he was unsure showing us around and it felt rushed. Although this did not totally sour our experience, I did feel as though I was a nuisance, which is definitely not what we expected from a hotel of this caliber or price point. I do wonder now if this was because we are a couple in our twenties and they felt that we could not afford to stay there (the majority of the clientele appeared much older than us and we were questioned on our age at check in). If this was the case, I would deem it a real shame, as we had spent the nights prior at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur and had never once been made to feel out of place. I would also add that I wish the room rate were more inclusive. This resort is expensive, which we expected and were happy to pay for in anticipation of good service, but it does leave a bad taste to be charged an additional $70.00 per night to cover the resort fee and valet parking. Why not simply increase the daily rate to include the resort fee so that guests can see clearly what they are being charged? Unfortunately, there were more inconsistencies in service during our stay. For example, we called ahead to ask the valet to bring our car round as we would be leaving soon. When we arrived out front, our car had not been brought round and the boy whom we had spoken with on the phone admitted that he had forgotten. Admittedly, he left promptly to retrieve the car and offered us complimentary water but it shouldn't have been necessary. We came back to our room that night after turn down to see a card on the bed. It invited us to enjoy the complimentary fudge, except that it had been forgotten. On the other hand, we chose to order room service on our last night and the service was exemplary! We ordered a carrot cake for dessert to share and they very kindly split it in half and served it on two plates without us even having to ask. It was prompt, efficient and the best service we received during our stay. We only wished that the experience was emulated in other areas of the hotel. Overall, this hotel was pleasant and the staff well-meaning, but I felt that it fell short, especially given its reputation. With the exception of some, I felt the service lacked the warmth and welcome that I have experienced at other comparable properties around the world. It has all the potential of a five-star resort and I can understand how it could be a paradise for some. Sadly, this wasn't the case for us and we will be looking to other properties for our next visit.
