This is still a special place, but it's not the genteel, stately resort that it was for generations; instead, it's a much busier, boisterous resort that is lighter on the Southern charm and heavier on more generic modern amenities that many upscale travelers expect. The staff is incredibly friendly, the accommodations are well-appointed, and the outdoor activities are family-friendly. Bring your wallet, or maybe a second mortgage, as everything is a la carte.

The Cloister is a classic hotel. It was entirely rebuilt about 12 yrs ago, but parts look like it has been there a long time. We stayed in a Beach Club king room and it was lovely but with no view. We enjoyed the adult pool, thank goodness, because the large main pools are overrun with children so know that this is very much a family resort. We had included breakfast and the buffet with cooked to order eggs leaves nothing to be desired. It has everything you can think of and more! We ate dinner at 3 of their restaurants and they were all very good. We were celebrating an anniversary and they had a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in room And each night we were given complimentary glasses of champagne when we sat down to dinner.

We are from Florida and had always been curious about The Cloister, so we were happy to finally get a chance to try it. Upon arrival, we were shown to our room which was in a private gated area. The room was stunning, spacious, and well appointed. I moved the coffee table a little to accommodate the sofa bed in the room, and there was a dead palmetto.....maybe they can be a little cleaner, but the whole resort is gorgeous. I would not recommend the Italian restaurant unless you enjoy Macaroni Grille on steroid prices. The room service food was also awful, but other than that, all was great. The spa was amazing. The resort offers every imaginable activity from skeet shooting to archery to horseback riding to tennis to spa to fitness. They gym was also fabulous with classes from yoga to spin. Be prepared to pay extra for EVERYTHING. My boys did kayak fishing which they enjoyed. Loved the resort. Service for the most part was amazing. There were a few servers who seemed miserable, but most were very accommodating.

One of our favorite all time vacation spots in the USA...very high end, but worth every penny....great dining venues, tennis, sailing, fishing, skeet, horseback riding, falconry, etc....fantastic food and wine selections...true southern hospitality...

From A-Z this place is stellar! From the greeting up on arrival and check in... to the towering lobby... I just love this place! The rooms might be a little dark...there are a lot of lamps, but they don't seem to work with the wall switches. Dining was terrific. Wish the wine list by the glass had a little better California representation. Would go back again anytime!
