Castel Monastero in Siena, Italy

Ten centuries of history radiate from the hand-hewn stone walls and terracotta floors at Tuscany's Castel Monastero, the centerpiece of a small medieval village called Monastero dell'Ombrone. The monastery first appeared in correspondence in 1044 in connection with the nearby Berardenga Abbey and over the centuries noble families transformed it into a castle. Thanks to painstaking restoration efforts, the ancient ambiance remains – guests from all over the world go for bespoke experiences, such as a Bentley ride through the Tuscan countryside.

Play with the daydream of moving to Tuscany – there are villas for sale at Castel Monastero, after all – as you wander through the property's sun-kissed vineyards. Indulge in an exclusive saline sea oil bath developed by the Thalasso team in Sardinia. Feast on an olive and cheese plate at an outdoor table facing the piazza. Catch a polo match at Villa Sesta Polo Club.

After so much choice in the area we are very happy to have chosen this amazing gem! The Hotel is about 20 km to Siena in a great quiet hill full of history and amazing decor. It seems the time has gone back 300 years with the LUXURY touch of a simple but Super Elegant hospitality venue. Rooms are well appointed , we were staying at the Blu Contrada on the upper level. Very clean with great amenities! Once you open the wooden windows in the morning is just unreal. Peace at its best Wonderful Restaurant and bars were the service and food quality is unbeatable ( they even have a 1 star Michelin place). See the pictures to better understand. Spa pool with salty sea water was a great surprise. What can be improved? Perhaps only the old Technogym equipment at the gym, pity. Will go back for sure Thumbs up to all Staff that after few hours knows exactly what your needs are and nothing but I mean NOTHING is ever trouble. Great service in all areas, very well managed Hotel, will be back without hesitation !

Very attentive service and beautiful architecture in a serene setting make this a must-stay hotel. When we arrived after driving from Florence, they efficiently handled our quite heavy bags and parked our car while we were checking in. We learned to our surprise they'd upgraded us to a suite in a very quiet location well away from the main courtyard. On entry (about 4pm), we noticed the suite was quite warm and in his visit, the Front Office Manager explained the property has a "two-pipe system" which provides either heating or cooling but not both. (this is actually quite common in older...even elegant hotels). He apologized that this suite was set for heating (as they'd had some surprisingly warm weather and hadn't yet changed to cooling for the season). He offered to move us to another suite if available the next day. We opened the windows for the evening and the breezes cooled the suite. One small nit...the wifi was very, very slow. The bed was very comfortable with switches at nightstand height for easy control of the room lighting. The bathroom is very "Tuscan" but quite modern. The shower has handheld nozzle as well as a rain shower head. All with very good water volume and pressure. Our bath also had two sinks...great for getting ready in the morning. Dinner at Contrada Gordon Ramsay restaurant was very good. Alessandra, our server was very attentive and efficient and Mr. Dell'Armi, the F&B Director, took the time to chat with us for a while at dinner's end, sharing some of the menu concepts they'd been developing. The next morning, while we were on tour, they changed they changed the system to cooling and our suite was very cool and comfortable for the remainder of our stay. Breakfast in the courtyard all three mornings was very good, with a buffet of meats, cheeses, fruits, breads, cereals, pastries and eggs. Coffee and tea are served promptly with a smile. The staff speaks acceptable English and enjoys it when you try to speak some Italian. The hotel's General Manager...a very dapper gentleman...is always visible and engaged with his guests.

A small group of us stayed at this beautiful resort built around and surrounding an ancient monastery. Enjoy breakfast on the beautiful brick courtyard, dinner in the vaulted wine cellar, and groomed grounds and gardens that offer spectacular sweeping views of of the Tuscan landscape. The modern spa is one of the finest I've ever enjoyed with an indoor salt soaking pool and steam rooms for relieving aching muscles after a day's touring and a huge indoor romantic spiral hot tub with cascading waterfalls. Outdoors nearby are three-tiered swimming pools and exercise facility. The rooms and public areas are beautifully designed, and though modern in decor, work well with the antique look of the buildings on the property. The staff was very attentive and eager to assist and the food delicious. There's almost no reason to go anywhere else! But of course most will venture to nearby Sienna and other lovely Tuscan towns.

A group of 16 of us that were touring Italy stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The staff were wonderful and would make sure you had everything you needed. The grounds, outdoor pools, and spa areas were extremely well maintained and the views were spectacular. We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel each night and the food was delicious ---- lots of choices, nice presentation, good coffee, and a great selection of wines. While we were there about 20 members of the Dutch Ferrari group (Team Holland) arrived and spent one night. These men were loud and obnoxious and it only got worse after considerable alcohol consumption. We were just finishing dinner when their group arrived and were glad to leave the restaurant because they acted like they owned the place with their shouting and beligerance. They continued to disturb the other hotel guests that had rooms around the courtyard into the wee hours of the morning until the management finally got them to leave the area. So....if you see any negative reviews (such as the one from Jochem K.) don't believe them. The Castel Monastero is a beautiful place, with wonderful staff, and provides a truly relaxing accommodation for a real vacation.

Except for the group that thought they owned the place and drank too much and complained about everything. I have to give the place 5 stars to counter the guy that was part of the group (3 days ago named Joachem) because he was one of them. This is a serene setting; a wellness spa and a hotel with the theme being relaxation. Just because the hotel is in the countryside doesn't mean you should use the surroundings like an outhouse, or stay up till 1 am in the morning after the staff has cut your alcohol off because you're being loud and obnoxious.
