Castel Monastero in Siena, Italy

Ten centuries of history radiate from the hand-hewn stone walls and terracotta floors at Tuscany's Castel Monastero, the centerpiece of a small medieval village called Monastero dell'Ombrone. The monastery first appeared in correspondence in 1044 in connection with the nearby Berardenga Abbey and over the centuries noble families transformed it into a castle. Thanks to painstaking restoration efforts, the ancient ambiance remains – guests from all over the world go for bespoke experiences, such as a Bentley ride through the Tuscan countryside.

Play with the daydream of moving to Tuscany – there are villas for sale at Castel Monastero, after all – as you wander through the property's sun-kissed vineyards. Indulge in an exclusive saline sea oil bath developed by the Thalasso team in Sardinia. Feast on an olive and cheese plate at an outdoor table facing the piazza. Catch a polo match at Villa Sesta Polo Club.

We spent 4 days in this great place, very relaxing, it was so nice to wonder around the whole area. Extremely well trained and nice staff which for Italy is very rare, congrats about that. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food is ok, breakfast is a bit too poor for 5* and for the price you pay. The Gordon Ramsey restaurant was closed. The minus i would mention is that they charge 40 EUR per day per person for using the spa, which we used daily only for one hour and only for sauna. Spa area is very nice and well maintained. Highly recomended!

My boyfriend and I had an absolutely amazing stay here during our time in Tuscany. The location was perfect - not too far outside of Florence to get to, and not too far from some of the best vineyards in the region. But it was far enough off the beaten path to give you that private, secluded countryside stay feel. Before we even arrived, Silvia and Gerardo made sure everything about our stay was going to meet our needs. They were very communicative via email (responding almost immediately each time), and when we had to re-book one of our dinners there, they and the manager personally reached out to us when we arrived to make sure that we were happy with the alternate arrangements. They were also extremely gracious and so accommodating when it came to helping us book our lunch reservations and winery visits - we left the decisions for where to eat and visit up to them, and their choices were perfect. We ate at both of the restaurants while we were there, and were very happy with the food. We especially loved our dinner at Contrada - the tasting menu was delicious and the service was top notch. The ambience was very private and romantic as well - just what we were looking for! We will definitely be back to stay here in the future. The hotel grounds were gorgeous and well maintained, and our room was very spacious and clean with beautiful Tuscany design elements. Most of all, their staff truly cares about all their guests, and we'd like to thank them again for helping make our stay even better than what we expected.

one of the best places where I've been in my life. Huge and accessoried rooms and suites (I was in a huge suite), very kind personnel, and fantastic place in the countriside. There's also the possibility to dine in the famous Gordon amsey's restaurant which offers excellent Italian courses. The resort also offers a Gym and a SPA with the possibility to relax and have massages. Really raccomended!

Great looking venue, but sadly that's where it ends. The heating broke in the room, young girl arrived in her scarf, twiddled, told me it would be ok within some time, the next day, still freezing and so I went to the bar at lunch time for a hot drink, asked reception if the bar area was open, yes, walked in and no. Had to go back to reception to ask for them to get someone down there. Lunch time, went down to the restaurant, it was closed, I was instructed to the other restaurant upstairs, this was FULL of people in a conference having a buffet, I was shuffled into an empty side room. The food is expensive and average at best, 18 euros for a small pasta Ragu 15 euros for a polenta starter. In the evening when I went to the bar, I sat quietly for a drink to be invaded by hoards from the conference, I asked if there was another area that I could go to for a drink, no other than my room. To have a cup of tea in your room is 7 Euros, not too bad I hear you say, until you add on the 25 euros service charge, yes that's 32 euros to have a drink of tea in your room because the hotel has taken the money for the conference and completely disregarded all other guests and they don't provide tea making facilities. The room was cleaned, but dirty cups left. A couple of months ago I stayed at castelo Nero near Florence, now that was truly 5 star in all areas, this sadly does not touch the surface.
