Dry and burnt fish in the restaurant

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 months ago

This hotel has certainly seen its best days. The paint is flaking and you are left with a feeling it is not very clean - specifically in the public restrooms. But the absolute worst experience is the food. For dinner we were served an over cooked and totally dry halibut which was so salty it was barely eatable. Adding to this the 'chef' had burnt the fish on the grill so that one side of the fish taste like roast chicken. For lunch the day after we were served a tasteless cod reminding us of a white piece of rubber in a sauce that looked lie sewage water. I am not totally down rating the hotel experience, apart from the cleanliness and need for renovation, but the restaurant is horrific and should be avoided at any cost.

A very enjoyable visit and one that we hope to repeat.

This hotel was a new experience for my wife and I. It was such a delight to be treated almost so well. The staff were superb -- friendly, helpful and very considerate of our needs. When we arrived and entered our room it was quite a surprise to find our luggage already in our room. After a short walk in the very Swedish town of Sigtuna we took an afternoon tea in their beautiful lounge. Again, we were surprised by a 3-tier serving tray with a very tasty selection of small "goodies" for our tea. Later in the evening, we were seated in a pleasant dining room with a fantastic view over lake Mälaren. We had a three course meal that was just delicious and the service was first class. Our room was very comfortable and our request for extra pillows was handled immediately -- another "star" for the staff. The breakfast had everything we liked with a bonus of making our own waffles.

Understated quality

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed August 15, 2021

My wife and I stayed overnight in a very pleasant room overlooking lake Mälaren and dined, after a glass of champagne, in the hotel's restaurant. High quality all over, in a kind of low-key manner which perfectly suited the century-old property, carefully modernised into excellent shape. And, not least, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Most surely wholly worth the not so low price tag!

Some details left to work on

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed October 24, 2020

We chose Sigtuna Stadshotell for a Friday-Saturday stayover with friends because we had heard that the restaurant should be something extraordinary. The hotel itself is really nice and the staff is very friendly and the attention to details is very good when it comes to the accommodation - e.g. staff visiting your room in the evening settings your blinds etc. Unfortunately the restaurant didn’t really meet up with our expectations. The food was good, absolutely, but not extraordinary. The sad part about the dinner though was that service wasn’t very attentive and didn’t live up to the ambitions that the hotel itself seems to have. Dinner started off really good and we were surprised with a little “snack” and bread&fennel pollen butter served on a warm slate stone. But between the dishes and after dinner we were pretty much left alone. No service refilling the wine glasses (of course we can manage ourselves but unusual at an ambitious establishment to have to) and most of all at the end of dinner when asked if we wanted coffee but not e.g. if we wanted an avec with it. And after dessert we weren’t asked at all if we wanted something more or payed attention to for almost a full hour after finishing. Very odd as the restaurant wasn’t busy at all at that time. So - great hotel but the restaurant experience wasn’t really anything special. If this is normal the restaurant probably miss out on quite some opportunities for additional sales (and really happy guests).

Brilliant in every respect

Absolutely fantastic. From the moment you leave the high street to enter the old hotel to the moment you leave it’s just a treat. Food was excellent, as was the service, the view, the atmosphere, everything. It was a pleasure to dine here. Perfect! Thank you.
