Sooke Harbour House in Sooke, Canada

Vancouver Island is an oasis of abundant evergreens and invigorating fresh air. On one of its beaches lies Sooke Harbour House: a coastal retreat founded by Frederique and Sinclair Philip, a couple with a passion for holistic living. They extend those values to the guests of their B&B, which is tucked away on land once purchased by Andrew Muir. Here, “luxury with a conscience” is what ties together the entire experience, from the spa services to the composting program to the grass-paved parking lot. Here, the stars are the local artists, seals, and native cuisine. As for the stars above, they are always in clear view.

Wake up to the sound of whales mating in the waters below, as the staff delivers a fresh breakfast to your room. After a soak in your room’s Jacuzzi tub, stroll through gardens lush with aromatic herbs and the textures of edible flora, coffee in hand and the salty ocean breeze wafting throughout. Take a charter boat for a six-hour salmon fishing excursion through local waters, and return to the hotel to sample wines from its list of 1250+. Spend the evening in the warm fire light of the Sooke Harbour House Restaurant and explore, for example, a seared red bandit rockfish with chervil potato rosti. Everything on the menu is indigenous to the Southwestern Coast of Vancouver Island, sourced from a network of local organic farms.

We took advantage of an off season promotional rate (minimum two day stay) on a deluxe king, ocean front suite. This is a traditional Lodge with a mix of old and new - a most inviting environment. Our room was large, yet cozy, split level (3 steps); roomy bathroom with jet tub and separate shower. Homey decorations with several pictures and a well prepared wood fireplace. A great view of the entrance to Sooke Harbour and a comfortable covered deck. Each day we were provided with very good house made cookies (1 each) and two drams of port each - nice touch! Each day the fireplace was cleaned and freshly prepared - simply strike a match. The quality of food in the Copper Room was excellent with emphasis on local and on premises garnish, etc. Also, we felt as though there was good value for food and services. All staff were friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the many pieces of art throughout the Lodge and the vast amount of artistic endeavour indoors and outdoors. All in all - very enjoyable - thank you!

Did not disappoint. We spent two nights at the Sooke Harbour House. Eclectic is probably the best description. First Nations and other art work distributed throughout the hotel. Ate at the two restaurants (both excellent), walked Whiffin Spit and toured around town. The rooms are individually decorated, wood burning fireplace, large jetted tub, very comfortable bed and bedding, nice sitting area, great views. The nightly Port and cookies is a nice touch. Grounds are well-maintained, must be beautiful in summer months. Resident deer are quieter than the resident seals.

The only down side of our stay was that we were not allowed to access our room prior to formal check-in of 3 p.m. - not one minute before! Other than that, it was a wonderful one-night stay in the Whale Room. The décor of the inside -- both the room and the common areas-- is relaxing and classy with lots of art work . The outside is perfect for nature lovers. The grounds are beautiful and include gardens of fresh herbs and vegetables which later appear on one's dinner plate. We soon realized why the gardens have fences -- there are deer wandering around checking out the guests. The spit of land at the front of the hotel makes for a great walk with many seal sightings along the way. The food in the dining room was outstanding. Both dinner and breakfast featured a wonderful array of ultra-fresh, perfectly cooked options. There is nothing like enjoying a great meal while looking through picture windows at ocean, mountains, deer, and even a sea lion who had just caught a large salmon. Totally awesome.

I was fortunate to take advantage of an off-season special at this very lovely, special place. Check-in was pleasant and I was shown to my suite and the amenities and various guest areas were politely and fully explained. The room was very large with a breathtaking view of the water. A flask of port and freshly made cookies were a nice welcome treat. The fireplace was already laid with newspaper-wrapped wood and plenty of extra wood in a nearby basket made things so convenient. The bedding was so comfortable and there were several extra storage shelves so you didn't feel like your bags were in the way. It just had a very comfortable feeling about it all. I did not eat in the main dining room for dinner, but I did enjoy a wonderful meal in their Copper Room, a slightly more casual bistro. Food was great and wait staff very pleasant. Breakfast in the main dining room was excellent with a great view of the grounds and water. Binoculars were placed in spots which was helpful and nice. Again, both food and service were great. Many nice walking areas around the grounds plus easy walk to the Whiffen Spit, which is a really fun walk to experience. I loved staying here and am so glad I finally was able to experience this special place :)
