Sooke Harbour House in Sooke, Canada

Vancouver Island is an oasis of abundant evergreens and invigorating fresh air. On one of its beaches lies Sooke Harbour House: a coastal retreat founded by Frederique and Sinclair Philip, a couple with a passion for holistic living. They extend those values to the guests of their B&B, which is tucked away on land once purchased by Andrew Muir. Here, “luxury with a conscience” is what ties together the entire experience, from the spa services to the composting program to the grass-paved parking lot. Here, the stars are the local artists, seals, and native cuisine. As for the stars above, they are always in clear view.

Wake up to the sound of whales mating in the waters below, as the staff delivers a fresh breakfast to your room. After a soak in your room’s Jacuzzi tub, stroll through gardens lush with aromatic herbs and the textures of edible flora, coffee in hand and the salty ocean breeze wafting throughout. Take a charter boat for a six-hour salmon fishing excursion through local waters, and return to the hotel to sample wines from its list of 1250+. Spend the evening in the warm fire light of the Sooke Harbour House Restaurant and explore, for example, a seared red bandit rockfish with chervil potato rosti. Everything on the menu is indigenous to the Southwestern Coast of Vancouver Island, sourced from a network of local organic farms.

This hotel is ok, but could be spectacular. The position is amazing, the building interesting, the food excellent and the staff good but...... The rooms do need some refurbishment now. They are tatty and sometimes not as clean as one would like. All the staff try hard but it is time the owner had a re-think "Do I want to lose business or do I want to take this hotel to the next level?"  The rooms are spacious but bathrooms really do need replacing. It is nice to have a log fire in the room but when we were there you had to pay for extra wood. The jacuzzi baths are showing signs of wear as are several things in the rooms. It would not take much to change this hotel from 4 star rating to a 5 star. It is in such a wonderful position (that is what you are paying for) it is a shame to let it go downhill. The suggestions below may seem trivial to some people but for the price you pay at this hotel you expect so much more.  These things make this hotel look cheap and nasty. Some of the suggestions put together could just take the rooms up to the next level. The rooms certainly need:  New dressing gowns. New soap holders. New curtains, they were stained and the pulls need replacing Remove dreadful plastic flowers. Remove huge clock radio - it is overpowering. Rooms need bedside cupboard or table.  Paint all the dull old brown varnish. Renew all lamps as the switches are useless. Remove plastic trays, get new cups and proper tea pots. Fridges in bathrooms are not nice. Change 'toilet' notice! Please change horrid plastic coathangers for wooden ones. The 'Grand Dame' has seen better days!

Our second stay here, taking advantage of the Travelzoo deal again. Do phone the resort, and talk with reception. They are really good about booking you a room that will suit your needs and wants. We booked room 12, wanting to be above the ground level. This room was wonderful, although there were two things that didn't work for us as well as we had hoped. Nothing to do with the staff or the resort... just us! The fireplace in this room doesn't have an elevated hearth. It sits right down on the floor. While that shouldn't be a problem for most people, for us, it was that much harder. Especially difficult because my girl guide skills were missing that weekend! We almost smoked ourselves out the first night. Had to open the door to the balcony to get a draft going, and to keep the fire going. That just made the room cold, and it kind of defeated the whole purpose of having a cozy fire in the first place! The second night, we did manage much better, but too much work. Third night, we didn't even bother trying! The wood was dry, and there was sufficient paper and kindling. It was just us. The bathtub in this particular room is very long, but narrow. While I enjoyed the extra length, it was more difficult to get out of the tub. We will absolutely enjoy this place again in the future, but I would not want to stay in this particular room again. I know which room to ask for the next time already, as the staff is great in finding the room that works best for your needs. Do bring binoculars with you too. All the rooms have views. And in November, when we were there, the sea lions were very busy getting their fill of salmon. It was incredible to watch them all out in the harbour.

Without a doubt, the most wonderful resort in BC. Or suite was beautiful, overflowing with charm and character. The wood burning fireplace and Jacuzzi were wonderful touches. The resort has fantastic fine dining and a cozy lounge. The view is spectacular, and it is located near Whiffin Spit, which is a wonderful still to watch the sunset. If I could give this place 6 stars I would.

We stayed here recently for 2 nights. The location right on the water is spectacular. However we found the hotel very expensive in relation to the quality of the room and furnishings. I will not go into details, but this hotel has seen much better days and needs a major retrofit. One of the staff told me that it has recently been sold and is in ownership transition. We look forward to a return visit once the renovations have been completed.

This place has been on our bucket list for a long time. The experience totally met our expectation. The room was beautifully decorated. A welcome package included delicious home made cookies and a small carafe of port. Spacious patio with deck chairs. Incredible view. Cannot wait to go back.
