Sooke Harbour House in Sooke, Canada

Vancouver Island is an oasis of abundant evergreens and invigorating fresh air. On one of its beaches lies Sooke Harbour House: a coastal retreat founded by Frederique and Sinclair Philip, a couple with a passion for holistic living. They extend those values to the guests of their B&B, which is tucked away on land once purchased by Andrew Muir. Here, “luxury with a conscience” is what ties together the entire experience, from the spa services to the composting program to the grass-paved parking lot. Here, the stars are the local artists, seals, and native cuisine. As for the stars above, they are always in clear view.

Wake up to the sound of whales mating in the waters below, as the staff delivers a fresh breakfast to your room. After a soak in your room’s Jacuzzi tub, stroll through gardens lush with aromatic herbs and the textures of edible flora, coffee in hand and the salty ocean breeze wafting throughout. Take a charter boat for a six-hour salmon fishing excursion through local waters, and return to the hotel to sample wines from its list of 1250+. Spend the evening in the warm fire light of the Sooke Harbour House Restaurant and explore, for example, a seared red bandit rockfish with chervil potato rosti. Everything on the menu is indigenous to the Southwestern Coast of Vancouver Island, sourced from a network of local organic farms.

We had a wonderful three day celebration at Sooke Harbour House Resort in December as we celebrated our 40th anniversary. We had been here once before, so we booked a special dinner in the dining hall, and got a room on the ground floor that connected with the beach and had an outside hot tub. It was even more wonderful than we had imagined, with orcas, seals and seabirds in the water, incredible food in the dining room, and the new Copper Room to enjoy! The staff is so warm and helpful, and the weather cooperated with sunny days alternating with a beautiful snowfall! We hope to come back to this wonderful place!

Stayed here two nights over New Years and we loved the room we had which really worked well with our two dogs. The hotel has a lot of artwork some really good and some not so but interesting. The wood burning fireplace is a real nice touch. The setting is really good with immediate access to Whiffin Spit and although the gardens are off season you can see what they are normally. Concerns are mainly with the food which we found generally a little sparse. One meal had the full green salad with a side piece of fish and the salad was no more than about 5 forkfuls. We had the New Years brunch at $50 per person because it was the only breakfast available so I paid $120 for coffee and 2 poached eggs that were cold and my wife one egg and a bit of salad. We had the 14 course New Year’s Eve dinner and while it was a taste treat the largest plate wasn’t more than a couple of bites and lots of serving mistakes like venison to my acknowledged pescatarian wife. The restaurant service is trying hard are just not experienced and are amateurish which is fine by me usually but with a $420 dinner for two I expect better. Very limited wine knowledge. However I understand that staffing is a problem at holidays so that may be why. We did not get the nightly port and cookie service but had a couple of cookies in the room on arrival. The dog cookies are wonderful and they were kind enough to give us the recipe but I asked to buy a couple of dog cookies for the Road on paying my $1200 bill for 2 days and was just told no. Not a nice way to end a very good hotel stay even with some flaws.

You never get a second chance to make a good first impression! We had mixed feelings about our stay at Sooke Harbour Hotel. It remains a unique destination and experience with several small touches that make you feel right at home like homemade cookies daily in your room, complimentary port, welcome note with truffles upon arrival and unlimited wood for fireplace. On the other hand, the room did not live up to our expectations and the restaurant exceeded them! Owners and housekeeping need to pay better attention to details in the room. We had a cracked mirror, no towel rack in the bathroom, no shelf to place amenities in shower, cracked tiles, ugly TV wires exposed, and no privacy in shower especially on our floor where guests could walk in front of our room. Most importantly - only a partial view of the ocean from an ocean view room! We wondered if it's necessary to travel with hedge clippers! Bread and butter is your view - trim your trees and bushes!!!!! Or better yet, take some down! Be Aware - every room is different including ground floor, first floor and second floor room rooms. It would be better if they treated the hotel like a B&B, showing each room online and allow guests to choose to avoid disappointment. The breakfast room was fantastic especially corner table. Food is the reason to visit this hotel.

My wife and I stayed in the Mermaid room. The room was very neat, beautiful view and quite comfortable. The four course meal was excellent. The dinner chef is excellent. We found breakfast at some of the other establishments better suited for our stay and appreciated the staffs excellent recommendations. We did wait a little extra at times, but always found it pleasant. Some of the grounds and exterior are worn, but in line with our expectations. Overall, a recommended experience.

We took advantage of an off season promotional rate (minimum two day stay) on a deluxe king, ocean front suite. This is a traditional Lodge with a mix of old and new - a most inviting environment. Our room was large, yet cozy, split level (3 steps); roomy bathroom with jet tub and separate shower. Homey decorations with several pictures and a well prepared wood fireplace. A great view of the entrance to Sooke Harbour and a comfortable covered deck. Each day we were provided with very good house made cookies (1 each) and two drams of port each - nice touch! Each day the fireplace was cleaned and freshly prepared - simply strike a match. The quality of food in the Copper Room was excellent with emphasis on local and on premises garnish, etc. Also, we felt as though there was good value for food and services. All staff were friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the many pieces of art throughout the Lodge and the vast amount of artistic endeavour indoors and outdoors. All in all - very enjoyable - thank you!
