Sooke Harbour House in Sooke, Canada

Vancouver Island is an oasis of abundant evergreens and invigorating fresh air. On one of its beaches lies Sooke Harbour House: a coastal retreat founded by Frederique and Sinclair Philip, a couple with a passion for holistic living. They extend those values to the guests of their B&B, which is tucked away on land once purchased by Andrew Muir. Here, “luxury with a conscience” is what ties together the entire experience, from the spa services to the composting program to the grass-paved parking lot. Here, the stars are the local artists, seals, and native cuisine. As for the stars above, they are always in clear view.

Wake up to the sound of whales mating in the waters below, as the staff delivers a fresh breakfast to your room. After a soak in your room’s Jacuzzi tub, stroll through gardens lush with aromatic herbs and the textures of edible flora, coffee in hand and the salty ocean breeze wafting throughout. Take a charter boat for a six-hour salmon fishing excursion through local waters, and return to the hotel to sample wines from its list of 1250+. Spend the evening in the warm fire light of the Sooke Harbour House Restaurant and explore, for example, a seared red bandit rockfish with chervil potato rosti. Everything on the menu is indigenous to the Southwestern Coast of Vancouver Island, sourced from a network of local organic farms.

My wife and I have just returned from 3 breathtaking nights staying at The Sooke Harbour House. This hotel is heaven on earth. Great rooms, great restaurant and great service. The storms did not meet our expectations so we will have to return. There was no shortage of rain just wind. We will be back!

We have been going to Sooke Harbor House for the past 22 years. SHH has alway been a very special get away for my wife and I. This time was a total disappointment and we were treated like they were doing us a favor to stay with them ! First off we booked a King size bed and they said they had none available when we checked in at 1 PM Monday morning. I had book this vacation over three months ago and know the hotel and almost every room since we have been coming to SHH for years and knew the previous owners who always saw that we had the very best of service a made our stay always extra special ! NOT ANY MORE. On check in the front deck Lady who checked us in treated us right off poorly and rude! She said we had a Queen bed and were on the He main floor. When making my reservation months ago I was assured a King size bed and a upper floor room. I explained this to the check in clerk and she said that is all we have open I explained that months ago I paid for a larger room and was told I had this reserved. It was like take it or leave ! They were so rude we went to our room and we're totally disappointed I went back to the front deck and said we would only be staying two nights instead of three,. The clerk said no problem "you will only be charged for two nights" (However on check out they refused to honors this and over charged us besides charging us the extra night) Our fire place was full of wet firewood that we could never keep a fire going. I ended up going to town and buying a duraflame 4 hour log for $9. When we started to fill our outside hot tub with water there was a two inch brown dirty ring all around it. It was filthy dirty ! I call the front deck and they sent a nice young man who came down and wiped off the Fulthy dirty brown ring! I returned to the store in town in the mean time and bought a gallon of Clorox to clean it out myself.! I highly recamen if you ever plan to stay at Sooke Harbor House plan on stopping at the grocery store in town to buy yourself a gallon of Clorox for the hot tub!! And two duraflame logs for your fireplace in your room. On checking out my wife handed the front deck clerk her Visa card and the lady rang up the room bill she handed lise the recite for $662.18 less $145.77 when I had paid months earlier. She asked her how could the bill be so high and she couldn't understand either but would have management correct it! The lady was very sorry and nice but could do anything to correct the bill even though she had worked for the hotel for the 28 year ! Hard to believe right. Well that just took a call to our Visa to make a instant credit . For years Sook Harbor House was a beautiful retreat and incredable food and exsperience to enjoy with someone very special. However with the new owners the place has totally run down and they treat you like there doing you a favor to have you as there guest. Sooke Harbor is a beautiful special place to visit however don't ever plan to stay at Sooke Harbor House. Please feel free to contact me personally and I can tell you more. Everett Johnson. I discovered this little treasure trove while looking for an offbeat place around Victoria, BC. This place is secludedly located in front of a spit and has an excellent view, fantastic decor (I love the reading areas, paintings, and decor) and great hospitality. Moreover, I like farm-to-table places and there are a couple of very good places to try around this place. So, definitely try this place if you are looking for an offbeat, cosy but enchanting little space. And, don't forget to ask for their freshly baked cookies!

The whole atmosphere of the rooms and building is comfort and welcome. The dinning room serves excellent food well prepared and excellently presented with the emphasis on subtlety. However, the service was slow and we had to wait up to 30 minutes between courses and the entree arrived "warmish" rather than hot. I suspect it sat for a while before being brought out. It was also a very quiet night with 3/4 of dinning room empty. we mentioned it to front desk on checkout.

Room was large and had a beautiful view of the Juan de Fuca Strait. Decor was lodge-like and rather dated. Balcony desparately needed painting and new furniture. Room had coffee/tea facilities and a small fridge. We got a small carafe of port and cookies each night which were great. Bathroom needs a new shower head and new shower curtain. Restaurant in the hotel was excellent. Hotel is a good location for touring around Sooke and you can walk to the Whiffen Spit. The hotel is past its prime and we didn't feel it was worth the price we paid. We would not return to the hotel but would go back to the restaurant.
