Sooke Harbour House in Sooke, Canada

Vancouver Island is an oasis of abundant evergreens and invigorating fresh air. On one of its beaches lies Sooke Harbour House: a coastal retreat founded by Frederique and Sinclair Philip, a couple with a passion for holistic living. They extend those values to the guests of their B&B, which is tucked away on land once purchased by Andrew Muir. Here, “luxury with a conscience” is what ties together the entire experience, from the spa services to the composting program to the grass-paved parking lot. Here, the stars are the local artists, seals, and native cuisine. As for the stars above, they are always in clear view.

Wake up to the sound of whales mating in the waters below, as the staff delivers a fresh breakfast to your room. After a soak in your room’s Jacuzzi tub, stroll through gardens lush with aromatic herbs and the textures of edible flora, coffee in hand and the salty ocean breeze wafting throughout. Take a charter boat for a six-hour salmon fishing excursion through local waters, and return to the hotel to sample wines from its list of 1250+. Spend the evening in the warm fire light of the Sooke Harbour House Restaurant and explore, for example, a seared red bandit rockfish with chervil potato rosti. Everything on the menu is indigenous to the Southwestern Coast of Vancouver Island, sourced from a network of local organic farms.

Great views if you get the 'right' seat. service varied from outstanding to "do I need to ask again"! Leisurely. Food beautifully presented and good. I question not diabetic option for desserts except cheese at a cost.

This is where I have wanted to stay for many, many years. Yes, it has been there that long and is still a beautiful classic location with gorgeous views, wonderful food, attention to detail and friendly staff. If you are looking for brand, new, shiny, glizy location, this is probably not for you. But if you are looking for quiet, peaceful, romantic spot to walk, reflect and enjoy some quiet time this is it!

We got engaged last year in Sooke and had the pleasure of staying in one of the best rooms on the property, the Blue Heron room. It is this first experience that is the basis for our current review. Last year the bar/lounge room had just opened. It was cozy and offered a relaxing feel with tasty food. Each day the rooms were left in a condition that reflected a high expectation of service. For example, the fireplace was cleaned, set up, and left with extra wood, kindling and matches. This year when we arrived, we were hungry and looking forward to a drink and something to eat in the lounge (it was a late check-in after 9 pm due to a later flight) to find the lounge area closed (we were given conflicting information about whether it was short term or for the season due to staffing shortages). That was disappointing, but understandable. We were told we could get something from the kitchen but then received a call saying it was closed (9:30 pm). I'm sorry, but if you're short staffed, make adjustments. Extend dining hours so guests can at least get a drink or snacks. We ended up going to the Chevron gas station for snacks because everything closed by 10 pm. We tried to make the most of it, deciding to have wine in our room by the fireplace, only to find no matches in the room! And no response when trying to call reception. Not acceptable in my opinion. We were provided with complimentary drinks and breakfast when discussing our disappointment. This was appreciated and we expressed our thanks. Unfortunately, the inconsistencies with the condition of the room each day continued. From no tea or matches, to not replenishing toiletries, to missing firewood and kindling. Disappointing. And then at checkout, not asking guests how their stay was, knowing that they are short staffed and have closed the lounge (not advertised online), was upsetting. If a high level of quality and customer service is important, you should ask for and embrace constructive criticism, to improve in areas needed to maintain that quality. Or offer slightly reduced room rates if it's known that the service is not going to be the same due to shortages. When you charge a premium price, one expects premium service. Sadly, I don't think we will be back next year.

We were here overnight at the end of our travels on Vancouver Island. I had booked a room and dinner package. Our room was quite lovely - very large with a fireplace and balcony from which we could glimpse the ocean. We saved the complimentary welcome port for after dinner. The four course prix fixe dinner was excellent as was the service, and appropriate attention was paid to my requirement for gluten free. Breakfast the following morning was not great and the service was lacking. All in all it was very pleasant, but very expensive. The location is great and we enjoyed a nice afternoon walk on Whiffin Spit.

Sooke Harbour House is in an incredible location, rustic and extremely comfortable, great food, views and ambiance; can't wait for our next visit!! They have dog friendly rooms, and our four legged child also had an amazing time. Highly recommend this resort for anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable getaway.
