Jade Mountain in Soufriere, Saint Lucia

At Jade Mountain, owner Nick Troubetzkoy’s spacious, open-air sanctuaries sit high atop cliffs with the island’s only view of both the Piti & Gros Pitons. These coral-tiled spaces, accented in locally quarried stone, feature 20 different species of tropical hardwood flooring hand-picked from the rain forest of Guyana. Luxurious spa treatments from the resort’s boutique spa Kai en Ciel (House In Heaven) utilize 5,000-year-old Indian Ayurvedic traditions. The Jade Mountain Club Restaurant wraps around a colorful infinity pool and dishes up the creations of award-winning chef Allen Susser. Produce, fruit, and cocoa beans are manufactured on the resort’s organic Emerald Estate farm, an old 18th century sugarcane plantation. With over 1,000 cocoa trees, the resort offers in-house chocolate manufacturing, allowing guests to sample chef creations, sip on chocolate-infused cocktails, and even try their hand at creating their own chocolate delicacy.

Dive into the inviting green waters of the Caribbean and snorkel alongside pristine coral reefs. Cruise out on the ocean aboard the resort’s yacht or 60 foot catamaran. Indulge in the chocolate laboratory and create your own decadent truffles. Feast on the refreshing and organic mango & papaya creations of Allen Susser from your private enclave on Anse Mamin beach. Unwind with a romantic Alchemy Of Two spa treatment before soaking in your private infinity pool.

I and my fiancé just returned from a five day stay at Jade Mountain. We booked one of the Moon Sanctuaries and added on the Total Romance Package (all meals included, various activities, free t-shirts, voucher for a return stay, et al). In summary this is truly one of the most unique luxurious places to stay. Romance oozes out of this place and, honestly, without a significant other with you, you will not get the full experience of this place. We had fantastic weather every day with no rain (except one night while we slept). Below is a quick recap of some of our stay. 1. Airport transfer - We had roundtrip transfers as part of our package. We thought about the helicopter option but decided against it preferring instead to do the ride through the country. We were the only couple going and coming which we requested through their luxury private car upgrade. Note that if you are the only couple coming in to Jade Mountain from a flight you will automatically be by yourself. Otherwise, you will share with anyone else arriving with you. So, getting the upgrade may not be something you absolutely need to do to guarantee you are the only couple on the ride. We had great drivers both giving up lots of info on the island and pointing out island attractions along the way. Yes, the road is filled with twists and turns but it is not a big deal UNTIL THE LAST TWO MILES. LOL! Yes, the last two miles which is the road leading to Jade Mountain is an adventure and not for the faint hearted. It is very bumpy and steep, and you must share the one lane road with the oncoming cars. I think I held my breath the all the last two miles. 2. Service - Impeccable! There's no other word for it. From the moment you arrive with the mint towels and Bentley drinks (So good!! My fiancé ended up drinking Bentleys the whole time we were there - LOL) until they send you off with fresh baked muffins and water for the ride to the hotel. You are catered to like no one's business. Housekeeping, restaurant professionals, tour guides, reception / guest services, and of course the Major Domos (i.e. butler) (we had three). Allan was our main Major Domo and he was just the best!! You were a cell phone to speak with your Major Domo with any questions or requests you had. 3. Room - Ahhh!!! It was so dreamy. The rooms are well appointed and everything piece of furniture is super comfy. The open fourth wall was no problem for us. We relished it. Bugs and mosquitoes were not an issue as they spray often to keep them at bay. The netting around the bed secured you in at night. Birds are present, but we enjoyed their antics in our room trying to steal food when they thought we weren't looking. We never used the squirt gun to shoo them away. We just enjoyed them too much. It rained heavy for one night. Our bed was set back so no issues there. However, the sun chairs up front were quite wet in the morning but dried out during the day. Infinity pool – This is such an awesome room feature. We loved this pool. The water temperature was perfect. I am 5 ft 5in and I had to stand on my tip toes to not have my head go under. I just hung on the top edge and floated. It’s no problem for taller people. 4. Room - Bathroom. Yep. Totally open. So, what? LOL! The way it is situated makes it feel private. The toilet is out in the open. If you have qualms about being too open, then maybe it will bother you a bit but otherwise for most couples it is no big thing. 5. Room - Amenities. They will stock your fridge with whatever you want. Upgraded wines, champagnes, and alcohol are outside of the meal plans so expect to see that on your bill when you check out. Molton Brown bath products are provided along with the main toiletry items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving items, hairdryer). You only have to bring the special items you wish to use specifically (i.e. special body washes, face soaps, etc.). 6. Room - Miscellaneous. There are tons of storage for all your clothes, shoes, etc. 7. Food - Good golly. Amazing and well prepared. The food is all organic and comes from Emerald Farm which is onsite. You get very nice portions and you can add or remove items to dishes as you wish. I particularly like how they noted your allergies and would be mindful of them throughout your entire stay. We had room service about half of the time all coming from the Jade Restaurant. ~Jade Restaurant - Superb. Keep in mind the food here is "frou-frou". We took off quite a bit of the items on the menu to make it more "familiar" to us but that's just us. If you want top notch eating, you will not be disappointed here. We did breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Waffles - OMG! The preserves - YUMMY! Shrimp - So big and juicy!!! Everything else - Dang Good! LOL! ~ Trou au Diable Beach Restaurant - Yummy drinks and grilled lunch items. We ate here twice - once while on the beach (cabana service is great!) and for dinner after our sunset cruise. They a few other restaurants on site shared with the sister resort Anse Chastanet including the famous Jungle Bar Grill but we never made it there. Just was too caught up with just relaxing in our room or staying at the Jade. 8. Beach - Beautiful but not the best we've been. The main beach is rocky, and the sand is gray but still you will enjoy yourself. The water is a gorgeous dark teal blue. 9. Activities - Plenty to do. It really is up to your taste. We are more laid back and only did the Jazzy Sunset cruise. The cruise was so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well worth the money. You must do this cruise. The music was very nice but what stole the show was the dolphins and whales we were able to see. The weather and the sea were fantastic for us. You are out for about three hours and you see so much. If you get a great group with you, you will have a blast. The captain and crew keep you entertained and there are plenty of drinks and hors d'oeuvres served. As to music and dancing live music is available at Jade Restaurant during certain weekdays for a few hours each evening. We experienced the acoustic guitar performer one-night music and heard the music from the bands either while on the beach or from our room dining in for dinner. 10. Miscellaneous - ~Stairs. Jade Mountain is full of steps and they are steep. From our room to the top was 116 stairs and were located on the middle level. Eventually we got used to it and it was no problem towards the end of our stay but at first...woo wee! LOL! Even going down the beach is a hilly trek down and up. If you are out of shape, have any mobility issues, you don't want to come to Jade Mountain. Hate to say that but it is the truth. They have a shuttle for the beach to and from but from your room to anything else it is all on you. ~ Tipping - You can tip whenever and to whoever you want. We personally tipped the housekeeping and restaurant staff and all three of our Major Domos the night before we left in USDs. We also tipped our drivers for the transfers. You can also leave tips at the reception desk and they will share it with all the staff according to your wishes or just split evenly with everyone. ~Technology - Free Wi-Fi in every room. No television or radio. My fiancé thought it was going to be a real chore for him to get through our stay, but it wasn't. We did bring our own Bose speakers and listened to music during the day and had our iPads and laptops for reading or watching movies though just in case. I think in the end we used our iPads and laptops on two days for about two hours. I know I forgetting to review something, but I am tired now. LOL! So, here's my wrap up. PROS: Romantic, luxurious, great food, lots of activities, impeccable service, pure relaxation, perfect for couples, perfect for nature lovers, amazing room and views, unique and environmentally conscious resort, private infinity pools CONS: May be too frou-frou for the more down to earth, the stairs may be too much for some, expensive (so if this is not the type of check you are used to writing beware and get one of the meal plans), not the best beach in the Caribbean, better suited for couples, not for those who must have tech in their rooms, not for the shy if an open bathroom is not your thing and you must be enclosed for privacy

We just returned from an fantastic, unique week at Jade Mountain celebrating my wife's birthday. Locale The hotel is built into a hill, above an older, more traditional bungalow-style hotel. Jade Mountain feels quite remote. It's a 1 hour drive from the airport, and includes tight switchbacks, a single lane bridge or two, and the last mile from Soufriere to the resort is an incredibly rough, steep 1 mile drive. Every room has an unobscured view of the Pitons. The resort has 2 beaches: one immediately below at Anse Chastanet and a second more private and far superior beach called Anse Mamin that's a kilometer walk away. Staff Everyone at Jade is incredibly welcoming and helpful. We're not resort people per se, and took a day or so to become comfortable with such a high service level. We had three major domos, so there was always someone available. The two with whom we dealt most often were great, but Teddy, who we reckon was the senior member of the team, was perceptive to what would make each day stand out for us, and so went above and beyond to make our vacation special. Room Our travel package included a free room upgrade, so although we paid for the lowest end sky suite (no indoor pool), we were shown to the next-level star suite, as we expected. It included a ~12'x25' pool, nicely sized room, king size bed, two-sink open air bathroom, and stone jacuzzi. After the room tour, however, one of the managers came in and said there'd been a mistake, and we were to be upgraded 2 additional levels to a much larger sun suite. This was helped because our travel agent is part of the Signature Network. This was totally unexpected, as the sun suite was over the top. The room was huge, (about the same square footage as the apartment we live in!), and included a ~20'x30' indoor pool. The jacuzzi was fiberglass, and not quite as nice as the stone one in the smaller room. Note about the sky suite: while it has no indoor pool, there is a pool in the Jade Mountain Club restaurant at the top of the hotel that sky suite guests can supposedly use, but it would be strange to actually do so, since it's in the middle of the cocktail bar. Dining There's one restaurant, the Jade Mountain Club, in the hotel. Felt quite high end, with excellent service, a "smart casual" dress code, and priced to match. (For room service, you can order from the regular room service menus, including breakfast, all day, afternoon tea, and midnight menus, or can order from the Club's menu.) All the other restaurants are a walk away at the Anse Chastanet complex. While it seems like the Chastanet has a lot of restaurants, many share the same roof. Treehouse and Emerald restaurants are each next to each other, and regardless of which you're in, you can order from either/both menus. Likewise the beach restaurants Apsara and Trou Au Diable are under the same roof with the same staff. Most restaurants were closed on Tuesdays. Trou Au Diable/Apsara seemed the most harried, and had people from both hotels plus non-resident cruise ship visitors. Service and cuisine at the Treehouse/Emerald were very good. Our package included a breakfast and dinner (excluding alcohol), so we were on our own for lunch. The hotel provided a bento box daily, which included a light main (chicken or fish, typically), fresh fruit, and something sweet (banana loaf, cream puff, madeleines, etc.), which made for an excellent light lunch or afternoon tea accompaniment. We never got around to informing the Jade that we don't eat meat, so one of the bento boxes came with chicken one day. There's no good reason to not tell them of any dietary restrictions. We had breakfast in the room every day. Activities The resort offers trail biking on the premises. The cost includes a water taxi to the entrance at Anse Mamin, however since that beach is about .25 miles from the main beach, it makes more sense to walk rather than wait for the boat. Jabon, our biking guide, was enthusiastic and patient. We rode with another couple, and came back the day after to hike and run the most challenging biking trail. The resort also offers morning yoga, snorkeling, kayaking, a chocolate tour (there is a farm on the property), and water taxis to Soufriere to shop, none of which we did. Beach There are two beaches: Anse Chastanet, the main beach, and Anse Mamin, which is a short walk away. Anse Mamin is, by far, the superior of the two. The main beach is larger, but a bit rocky, and, because it's more easily accessible, more crowded as well. Anse Mamin is smaller, but there are no rocks at all, far less populated, and the grill offers an excellent lunch. Next trip, we head straight to the Mamin beach and not bother with the main one. Shopping There's a small shop at the Jade that sells beach clothing and souvenirs. We bought some whole bean local coffee there for about $32/lb that costs $19 at the airport. Given that the resort is a chocolate producer, we would have bought some there to bring home had we known that the airport doesn't sell any local chocolate at all (tons of rum balls though).

After clearing customs, go to the small booth and you are welcomed with a refreshing peppermint towel, water and introduced to your personal driver. The drive from the airport is about 90 minutes and yes the last 20 minutes are on a very rough, hilly road. When we arrived at Jade Mountain, we were met by a team of people offering drinks, carrying our luggage, welcoming us and escorting us to our sanctuary. We stayed in JE3 (for some unknown reason we were upgraded to this Sun Sanctuary) located on the top room level on the southeast corner of the building. Upon entering the room, all I can say is WOW!!! This is a large sanctuary with a small fridge, coffee and tea makers, wine fridge, dining table, sitting area, lounge chairs, large bed, large, open air elevated (up 6 stairs) bathroom and a fabulous infinity pool. Not to forget a fabulous view of the pitons!!! Yes, the birds come into the room - just show them the squirt gun and they take off. No bugs that we could see. Infinity pool not heated, but not cold. Being on the east side, we had early morning sun, but no afternoon sun making the pool a little cool but usable in the afternoon. There is a power converter connected to a U.S. power strip so you can charge / use any electronics. There is a personal wifi in each room and it worked well. You receive a small cell phone to contact your Domo. Call him whenever you need ANYTHING. Need a ride to / from the beach - call. Need a hut set-up on the beach - have him call the beach attendant. Need drinks or a snack in the room - call him. You get the point. Meals / restaurant(s). We ordered breakfast in the room each morning. Why? Do it the first morning and you find out why. Place your order the night before and your meals are delivered at the time you specified and the food is outstanding. Nothing like eating a gourmet breakfast in your pajamas. We ate lunch at the beach restaurant on the main beach and one day we went to the smaller / secluded beach which is a 5 - 10 minute walk (or take the water taxi) and had the highly recommended burger. It was a really good burger. We ate dinner every night at the Jade Club. Why? Eat there the first night and you will know why. Service is impeccable. Food is outstanding. Something different every night. Get the bon bons (locally made chocolate treats) for desert. After our third night, the bartender knew our drink preference and would have them ready for us upon arrival. The sommelier remembered what wines we liked and how many glasses of white we had before switching to red. The house wines are delicious. Above the Jade Club is a great patio / deck where you can sit and have drinks and see great sunset views. I would strongly advise having a meal plan or do the all inclusive. We have been to many island and this resort (compared to others) ala cart would be very expensive The main beach is large and there are plenty of huts. Have your Domo call ahead and have them set-up your favorite hut for you. Activities - there are plenty of activities to choose from both water and land excursions. Or you can enjoy the beach and your fabulous sanctuary. House keeping did an outstanding job keeping the room spotless. Every afternoon a small snack box was left in the fridge and chocolates left at night. Depending on which level your sanctuary is located (there are 6 levels), you may walk a lot of steps. Make sure to read the books in the room about the history of the island and of the resort. One night after dinner we met the resort astronomer. She took time explaining the stars and moons and constellations. She was very knowledgeable, informative and entertaining! Tipping - it is a personal decision. We tipped because the service and attention we received was second to none. Everyone goes out of their way to make your stay first class and this is a first class resort. Message me with questions.

From the smiling face at the guest reception at the airport every expectation was exceeded. We read numerous reviews that had us worried about the car transfer to the resort. We are glad to say it was an easy one-hour ride to the resort was actually enjoyable. The taxi drivers were very safe and gave a fantastic educational tour about the island. After arriving to Jade we were brought to our “sanctuary”, which was the perfect word for our room. We had an idea what the sanctuaries looked like from the website but really does not to the room any justice. You don’t really understand how expectational the sanctuaries are until you hear the birds chirping, the peacefulness and feel the breeze. We had perfect weather and the fan above the bed kept us at the perfect temperature during our stay. The rooms were equipped with everything we could possibly need… you don’t even need to bring a toothbrush. The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept in. The Majordomo brought us a 1980’s cell phone to contact them anytime! We never felt like a nuisance even with the hourly drink requests all night long. Ultimately the favorite part of our trip was heading up to the Jade Mountain Club to dine. The club is strictly for hotel guests and typically at breakfast and lunch we were the only one’s dining. Most guests chose to eat breakfast in their room. We did this the first day but then choose to eat at the club. We truly enjoyed interacting with the wonderful, smiling staff and we found the quality of some of the food to be superior in the club. The food was absolutely exceptional some of our favorites at breakfast was avocado toast, omelets with gruyere on top, and eggs benedict. Some our lunch favorites were chicken quesadilla, tuna nicoise, and fettuccine verde. Dinner was a completely different multi course menu every night. TRY EVERYTHING! We really enjoyed the phenomenal live entertainment every night at dinner from 7-10. For activities we really enjoyed being on the beach and reserving cabana number 14 or 15. They set everything up for you and it is full service. The stairs to the beach are doable but if you prefer your majordomo can arrange transportation to and from the beach. We took a mountain bike trip with Bike Tyson… they guy is incredibly funny and can make a coconut fall of a tree by looking at it. The bike tour can accommodate any fitness level and a must to see the plantation ruins. We heard from other guests on the that volcano, sulfur spring tour they felt pressured by non-hotel staff to tip at the 3 different stops. Every night our Majordomo drew a rose filled bath for us after dinner. The sunset cruise is a must and takes you right to the base of the pitons. It was a great chance to mingle with the other guests. It was such a special place and the staff will meet your every need. For example, one afternoon we asked for ear water drops at the dive shop and they were out. They must have run to town to purchase and they returned with them at dinner for us. The attention to detail is unlike any you will ever receive anywhere else.

First and foremost, great staff! Warm, courteous, friendly and engaging. From up the mountain, down to the beach, management, major domos, waiters, maids, drivers, activities staff there is a uniformly effortless ability to make guests feel welcome and attend to their needs. Full marks to the whole team! Lovely large rooms (sanctuaries!), all a little bit different in layout and having different views, but equally comfortable. The soporific sound of water in the rooms with pools and the sounds of the forest in those rooms without pools can lull you to sleep at any time of the day. We experienced and enjoyed both types of rooms. It took us no more than one night to adjust to the “open air” living. The absence of TV’s and room phones is a real plus for those seeking quiet time. The (provided) mobile phones were efficient in connecting with the major domos and reception. In-room Wi-Fi was fast and had a strong signal with our own booster/router. The bathrooms are spacious and well accessorized. The Jade Club Restaurant was excellent for breakfast and dinner. We enjoyed magnificent views, relaxing ambiance, a diverse menu of first class cuisine and a good wine list, accompanied in the evening by the very best local musicians we have ever experienced anywhere in the world (+94 different countries!) There are two beaches to enjoy, both well maintained and serviced by staff. They are public beaches, but we were never hassled by peddlers at any time. Beach loungers are readily available and well shaded, if required. Wait-staff were attentive and quick to bring drinks/food. There is interesting snorkeling and diving to enjoy just off these beaches or a short boat trip away. Best done when the sun is out because the gray/black lava sand tends to make the underwater vistas quite dark. Both beaches have relaxing and casual bars. Detractors to our stay included a hard bed with thin linens; parts of the hotel are starting to look tired/dated; we had booked a room without pool in the belief that the pool near the Jade Club was open to guests. This is no longer the case and we were thankful in being offered a room with pool for our last two days. With a location on the side of a mountain, there are a lot of steps to climb for meals and to get to/from the beach. The hotel offers shuttles to those who wish to avoid the climb. However, we didn’t use or need the shuttle and benefited from the extra work-out!
