Ladera in Soufriere, Saint Lucia

There is no fourth wall in villas at Ladera – instead, there is the jaw-dropping backdrop of the Pitons, two mountainous volcanic spires that attract adventure-seekers from across the world. A faint tropical breeze wafts from the Caribbean Sea far below through netting on a four-poster bed carved from polished tropical hardwood. Incentive to leave your room can be found in chef Nigel Mitchel's creative interpretation of traditional island fare – try the roast conch served with organic vegetables from the neighboring plantation.

Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest. Walk among them on lush grounds that used to be a cocoa plantation. Float under the cascading waterfall of your private plunge pool, watching parrots and orioles drifting on air currents over the treetops. Sip sweet potato and coconut soup at the clifftop open-air restaurant. Watch the stars create an unobstructed canopy over the ocean, spotting constellations on your suite's star chart.

My husband and I went to St. Lucia for a week. We stayed 3 nights at Ladera (moutons) and 3 nights at Ti Kaye (beach). Ladera was simply amazing. When we were shown our room (Gros Piton, Suite P), I was simply blown away by the view from the open air suite. You could see Gros Piton, the beach and Caribbean sea and Petit Piton to the right. We were right in the middle of this spectacular view, though I don't think there would be a bad view from any room at the resort. The rooms are built into the side of a steep cliff with one open wall. It was wonderful to sit and have coffee in the morning staring at the amazing view while hummingbirds would come visit the lovely flowers planted by the open wall. The room had beautifully carved wood columns, along with the bed and furniture, which are all carved on site by the staff. Even the shower had a small eye level window where you could view the outside while showering. Everything was taken care of in your room, from a basket filled with a stargazing map and eyeshades to a small fridge stocked with drinks (included). The resort staff was very friendly and accommodating. Especially the front desk staff and concierge. They were happy to book individual tours for us - since it was just us, we go at our leisure or instruct the driver to stop somewhere on the way. The one time we needed extra towels, they were brought to our room in minutes. Don't miss the spa services, we had wonderful massages here, and don't miss the spa, which is nestled behind a door in a small rock and wood building by the fitness room. I travel a lot and I have to say this is one of the most unique places I've ever stayed in (besides a luxury tent in Africa). Because of this, I went back and re-read some of the reviews that were not rated excellent to see what others did not like about the place and decided to address these: Noise: The frogs and wildlife are loud at night, but I found it soothing to sleep to. I suppose if you're a city person that sleeps with the windows closed in the summer, you might not like this. There was one night where you could hear the music from Sugar Beach below, which was really loud, but was told the next day this was a one time special event they were having for the owner's birthday. I did hear the restaurant band one night, but it wasn't too loud and ended early. Bugs: Again, if you are a city person or are afraid of bugs, this might not be the place for you. It's an open air room, but we keep the lights low and honestly did not get that many bugs. I saw one cute little peeper frog in the bathroom, a few lizards that would dart in and out of the room in the morning, and a few small gnats - that was about it. It's not like bugs are crawling around you at night, besides you are sleeping under a mosquito net (and I did not see one mosquito). Kids: Someone complained about not being able to bring there kid here - thank you, thank you, thank you, Ladera for not allowing children! I would guess that most people are here for a romantic getaway and are happy to not have kids screaming and running around. Dated: Someone also described the resort as dated. Again, if you're looking for a Hilton or Marriott, this is not the place for you. This is a Caribbean resort and you need to be the type of person that appreciates hand carved mahogany, hand made mosaics and local materials to come here. Definitely take a tour of the sulfur springs and mud baths. Spend a day at Sugar Beach (great snorkeling and a shuttle from Ladera will take you there). Eat one night at Boucan (across the street - great food). You might also want to go into Soufiere - a small town, but Fredos and Petit Peak have wonderful local cuisine and you can get Baron's banana ketchup and hot sauce for much cheaper in the local supermarket then at the gift shop (and I would highly recommend buying some). In in nutshell, I loved this place and will rave about it for a long time.

You don’t stay at Ladera, you experience it. We stayed here for a week for a birthday celebration. We booked a Rainbow Suite but moved up to Paradise Ridge for extra room space. Mostly we preferred a cooler pool - with the heater on it turned into a bath - but with no heater, perfect! Skol and Keesha looked after us perfectly and we couldn’t fault a single member of staff. When we were there it seemed very much a honeymooners clientele. There was good quality entertainment in the bar in the evening but not much atmosphere and it was early nights all round it seemed. We went on a morning catamaran trip in search of whales and dolphins - none seem but it was a pleasant trip. The volcano, mud baths, Touraille waterfall (especially invigorating) and the botanic gardens was also very well done. Tet Paul trail was the highlight - it’s only 10 minutes away, is an hour or so’s walk with some climbing and steps, but so worthwhile. All in all, more than enough to stop us going stir crazy in a week we had planned as mostly R and R. Perfect. We loved the three - wall concept. Yes, there were tiny frogs, geckos, moths etc but nothing to spook anyone and with sensible anti-mosquito precautions we had minimal problems. Food in Dashene was very good. Breakfast was all a la Carte and the bread and pastry chef is a genius. Breakfast servers were perfectly efficient and happy to have a conversation. In the evening we had room service a couple of times (perfectly good standard) and ate in Dashene two or three times. It isn’t Michelin star quality, but perfectly goood and prices are as we expected for this standard of accommodation in the Caribbbean. We tried the Boucan restaurant at Hotel Chocolat one night too - about the same standard and price as Dashene, but very rich food with lots of chocolate, and a very good Martini indeed! For a one-off trip we have no hesitation in highly recommending. We flew in and out of the smaller Castries airport - be prepared, its over an hours transfer and the roads reminded me of poorly maintained English country lanes in the 1950s. With a good taxi and driver via the hotel we felt quite safe, however.

We just got back from a week long trip to Ladera and it was amazing. If you love nature, being outdoors, amazing views, peace and quite, great food and impeccable service - this is THE place to go! The rooms are gorgeous (must get a Hilltop dream suite at minimum), the food is great, but what sets it apart more than both those is the service. The staff there are amazing, very personable, go out of their way to make this your best trip ever. A few quick notes for other travelers:. ROOMS - heated pool is a must. Hilltop dream suite is fantastic room - note there are 7 of them on property, 4 of them are like the pictures on the website (with just a few steps separating the pool area from the bedroom area), however 3 of them are 2 level rooms (with a full flight of stairs between upper and lower levels). We were originally given one of these split rooms (and were not happy, as it was dark, view was limited and it was not what we were expecting at all) - they were able to get us moved to a different room (X2) and we LOVED it! As for neighbors - you don't hear them mostly - especially if you leave your pool waterfall running (another reason to upgrade to the Hilltop) - with a few exceptions. We had a few nights where a young newlywed couple from out east got put in our old room (X3) and they were VERY excited to be there (we heard a number of times how amazing they felt the room was). Luckily, they calmed down after a few nights and after that all was quiet. As others have mentioned, you may hear the entertainment playing quietly in the background, but all goes quiet at 10pm. During the day, may hear vehicles on the road occasionally, but nothing too bothersome. GROUNDS: Grounds are beautiful, but note that since the resort is built on a hill there are a lot of stairs. There is also not a lot of places to walk or hike (except to the rooms) on property. The views from the rooms and common spaces are awesome, so just sitting around enjoying the nature became a favorite past time for us. MEALS: The food here is amazing - lots of choices, even for picky eaters like my husband. Full breakfast was included in the Hilltop room rate - and that includes everything (yes, even the breakfast smoothies, which were delicious). We ate most of our meals here (except for one lunch at Hotel Chocolate - across the street - which was ok), and would highly recommend all the meals. We did not do the all inclusive meal plan and it worked out well for us (and we did not skimp on meals at all). Lunches averaged around $50-70 for two, dinners around $80-120 for two - without drinks. We did a special dinner on our 25th anniversary in the Wine Cellar. There was a small fee (I think $75), but worth it. The room is above ground, has windows, is air-conditioned (one of the only places that is), and is quiet - just the two of you with a single server. Very romantic dinner if you are celebrating a special occasion. EXCURSIONS - As others have mentioned, the Soufriere experience tour is a must - great way to see some unique features of the island, and having your own personal guide (who does all the leg work for you, and walks you to the front of the line is so worth it). We also did the Tet Paul Nature trail - great views of the pitons and surrounding area, very informative guide, lots of great photo ops, easy trail but does have some steps in it. Garden Tour with Ray was great - he is so passionate about the grounds and it shows. We also were able to pull off a Marigot sail and snorkel tour at the last minute which was a blast and well worth it. Definitely recommend going through the concierge for all tours - they make it so easy and handle everything. STAFF: I cannot say enough great things about the staff and service. They are on top of everything and go out of their way to make anything happen for you. Everyone from the hostess, to the garden staff, to the concierge staff, to the drivers, to the tour staff - all simply amazing. They really help to put this awesome resort experience over the top for us. If you love nature, the outdoors, quiet adult-only time together, this is a great place to go. If you are looking for lots of people, exciting nightlife, tons of on site activities, you should consider another resort.

We went here on our honeymoon and from the moment we got there we were served with a cool towel and the most delicious drink I've ever had ! The service and hospitality from the staff is absolutely amazing and are so kind and happy . The first time you see the view from either the pool area and room is breathtaking , literally ! The resorts grounds are gorgeous and tranquil . We got a couples massage over looking the pitons and was the best massage we've ever had . Dasheen the restaurant at Ladera was of course amazing as well as there staff. If you want to vacation / honeymoon somewhere out of the ordinary and relaxing this place is it.
