Ladera in Soufriere, Saint Lucia

There is no fourth wall in villas at Ladera – instead, there is the jaw-dropping backdrop of the Pitons, two mountainous volcanic spires that attract adventure-seekers from across the world. A faint tropical breeze wafts from the Caribbean Sea far below through netting on a four-poster bed carved from polished tropical hardwood. Incentive to leave your room can be found in chef Nigel Mitchel's creative interpretation of traditional island fare – try the roast conch served with organic vegetables from the neighboring plantation.

Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest. Walk among them on lush grounds that used to be a cocoa plantation. Float under the cascading waterfall of your private plunge pool, watching parrots and orioles drifting on air currents over the treetops. Sip sweet potato and coconut soup at the clifftop open-air restaurant. Watch the stars create an unobstructed canopy over the ocean, spotting constellations on your suite's star chart.

We couldn't decide between the Sandals experience or a boutique hotel (Ladera), so we split our trip between the two resorts. It was the best decision! We got to see two different parts of the island and had two different experiences. We stayed at Ladera first, and we were blown away by the resort and our amazing room. We were in the Heritage Suite thanks to an upgrade they gave us. The view between the 2 mountains was incredible! I felt like this was a resort that celebrities stay at and thought I was dreaming. I was nervous about the open air (no fourth wall) experience, but it was not an issue at all. I didn't think the bug were bad. There were birds occasionally flying in and out and geckos climbing our our walls, but it didn't bother me at all. It was a really cool experience! Loved the heated pool and took so many cool pictures from our room. We enjoyed the breakfast that was included at Ladera. The servers knew you by name and we had great views from the restaurant. We also walked down the street to The Boucan (at Hotel Chocolat) for dinner which was our favorite meal. I'm not a chocolate lover, but still enjoyed the way they incorporated it into the food, appetizers, bread, soup, dessert, and everything! From Ladera, we took the shuttle to Sugar Beach where we happened upon a little boat excursion. It was a cool experience, but it was just as nice and relaxing laying out on our deck with our own private pool. We also conquered the Piton and hiked the mountain. I'm glad we started earlier in the morning but it sure was a physical challenge. The hike was very rocky and strenuous. We made it to the top and back down in under 4 hours completely drenched in sweat. I'm so glad we experienced Ladera! I don't think any other resort on the island can beat the views from our room. It was super romantic and an unforgettable honeymoon!

After a year of planning, of looking at the stunning photos and reviews that everyone has been posting of Ladera, it was finally our chance to visit and we were not disappointed. We were greeted on arrival and shown to our room (Hilltop X) but I really did not want to take a room directly next to the restaurant. The team were very accomodating and moved us to another suite (Hilltop XV). A truly stunning view and well-appointed suite. As others have noted in their reviews, the staff are an asset to the hotel. From the wait staff to the pool-man and the bell-boy? (not sure what Rohan is, really) - all so very friendly and helpful. There are great little touches, such as pastries and bisuits that the chefs have made each day. Be aware - there are ants and ants LOVE biscuits. Store them in the fridge, otherwise you'll discover that ants can cut through plastic and demolish chocolate brownies - not even crumbs remainded! We ate at Dasheene and did not have a bad meal. Fantastic fresh fish, really great cerviche. Note that the menu changes once a week, so if you're only there for a few days, you may not get to see the new menu. Was really nice to meet Neil, the executive chef, on one evening and learn a little about the team working behind the scenes cooking up the dishes. Even though the air temperature is warm, I'd strongly recommend a suite wth a heated pool. Being able to roll out bed in the morning and into the pool is quite a thing. Also try swimming in the pool at night under the stars... you need to try it. Also try the hot tubs. It seems that very few people use them - we had them too ourselves on two occasions.

We love it here! This was our second trip and we'll be back for a third. Rooms are amazing with incredible views. Food and service were outstanding. Our Butler Kiesha took care of everything!!! Whether you spend the day at the beach or in the room, you'll never want to leave.

My husband and I just recently stayed at Ladera for our honeymoon (July 22-July 28). We stayed in Room A2 (which is the second room from the entrance). Our room was gorgeous with two stories. The downstairs had our plunge pool, mini fridge, first bathroom, and seating area (futon and small table with two chairs). The upstairs was our bedroom and second bathroom. The view was breathtaking. Because our room was so close to the restaurant, we heard all of the entertainment/music they had at night. My husband and I enjoyed this but some people might not. The sun set at around 6:30 every night and was completely dark by 7/7:30. Our room came with the full breakfast which was delicious! The fresh pastries each morning were so good, especially the chocolate pastry and the doughnuts! Then came the fresh fruit and hot breakfast items. The caramelized banana pancakes were my fav! Breakfast service was friendly and fast. Dinner included choices of breads with different oils, sauces, and dipping sauces. The saltfish fritters appetizer was our favorite. Dinner service was much slower, especially our last night where we waited for quite awhile for our food and then even longer for our bill, but still friendly. My only issues with the resort came with our room being right next to a service room and there ALWAYS being trash bags outside our room. It wasn't a huge issue but definitely something I think shouldn't happen with how much we spent to stay there. The other issue came with the restocking of our mini fridge. They didn't restock our fridge one day and when we called to ask they told us they would charge us a room service fee. After talking with them, we weren't charged, but the restocking of the fridge was continually late- they didn't do it until late afternoon/evening which, if you are counting on having drinks for the day, make sure you save some from the day before! Overall, this was a BEAUTIFUL resort for our honeymoon. The service was friendly and we loved the island of Saint Lucia! We look forward to going back in the future for our 10 year anniversary!
