Ladera in Soufriere, Saint Lucia

There is no fourth wall in villas at Ladera – instead, there is the jaw-dropping backdrop of the Pitons, two mountainous volcanic spires that attract adventure-seekers from across the world. A faint tropical breeze wafts from the Caribbean Sea far below through netting on a four-poster bed carved from polished tropical hardwood. Incentive to leave your room can be found in chef Nigel Mitchel's creative interpretation of traditional island fare – try the roast conch served with organic vegetables from the neighboring plantation.

Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest. Walk among them on lush grounds that used to be a cocoa plantation. Float under the cascading waterfall of your private plunge pool, watching parrots and orioles drifting on air currents over the treetops. Sip sweet potato and coconut soup at the clifftop open-air restaurant. Watch the stars create an unobstructed canopy over the ocean, spotting constellations on your suite's star chart.

This is one of the world's perfect places. Ladera was so obviously designed and built with a deep love and respect for the natural beauty of the island. There is so much character in the design- hand carved woodwork, lush water gardens, beautiful tile mosaics, and flowers placed all over your room- no details are missed here. Our honeymoon was perfect! This place is truly incredible, and the lovely staff will make your stay as perfect as possible. Caroline, Tenderly, Vianney, Leah, Gibson, Jennifer, Panic- from day one we were so well cared for! We will certainly return someday, and until then, we'll dream of that incredible view! The only thing I will say that was not perfect, was the spa. Every other place- the rooms, the restaurant, the bar, are beautiful. The spa was so visually disappointing, we did not feel the need to spend any time there. The spa was at such odds with the beauty of the rest of the resort, and that was the only disappointment we experienced. There is so much natural beauty to work with, it is such a shame they do not have a nice spa.

This is really a great place, with a truly outstanding, spectacular view, and very attentive and friendly staff. However, the furnishings are not the nicest you have ever seen, and the gym gives a good illustration - I literally couldn't go faster than "4" on the treadmill. I never knew there was such a "slow" machine. I had a great time, just didn't ink this was the best ever.

We stayed in a hilltop suite for 4 nights last week. Wow!!! What an incredible, incredible experience. Magical, really. I'll start with one of my biggest concerns before going. I am not an "outdoorsy" woman - I don't like bugs, critters, camping, the heat, etc. With this place, it's really not a concern at all. This was the extent of the outdoorsy-ness: Tiny (adorable) little birds would sometimes fly through the room or perch on the pool ledge for a minute. We left the light on in the bathroom too long one night and there was a large (very large lol) moth... but ok no big deal. And our closest run-in with nature was our fault - we put an appetizer plate of room service on the ledge of our pool to munch on as we enjoyed the view. A few minutes later while we were on the other side of the pool, a little mouse came up to see what that smell was. The second he saw us he scurried away. It's unlikely he would have gone any further as the pool and pool landscaping act as a barrier. Otherwise, the jungle sounds at night coupled with the pool waterfall lulled me into the most peaceful sleeps I've had in years. The thick and large mosquito net over the bed remedied any concerns of bugs or critters during the night. And lets not get started on those views!!! So amazing. And the room itself was so beautiful, well-taken care of, and I loved all of the local touches/feel incorporated in it. I mean, i just cant find the words to emphasize how beautiful it all is, from the views to the room to the resort property. Also, the staff was always so kind and accommodating. One morning we were running late to catch a tour and walked by the restaurant - they asked us if we were going to have breakfast and I told them we were running late but would tomorrow. They kindly offered and made us a to-go bag with different pastries and fresh fruit. We also had in-room massages which was amazing. I also loved that they provided a cell phone to bring with you everywhere - makes coordinating transportation and figuring things out so easy. I usually like to branch out and see new places before going back to places I've been, but this was just all so peaceful, relaxing, beautiful, magical, etc., I can see us going back sooner than we would have thought. Thank you Ladera.

Ladera is magical, and you'll realize that the moment you get there. There are gorgeous plantings and hummingbirds and you're handed fresh ginger fruit punch as soon as you step foot on the property. The rooms are as spectacular as people say - and also as they say, the photos don't do them justice. The bespoke furniture is both lovely and comfortable and the view is unbelievable. You'll take a million pictures at all hours of the day and still won't be able to quite capture the beauty of the pitons, the sea and the surrounding landscape. Things we loved: - sitting by the hotel pool. It's not heated but super refreshing on a hot day - and you can order drinks and food from the restaurant - spending an afternoon at Sugar Beach. This one is a no-brainer. Take the free shuttle and some towels (since paying $50/chair at The Viceroy is unnecessary). When you get there, rent snorkel equipment and explore the reef off the beach. Then grab a pina colada or mango daquiri from Blaze, who sets up shop right on the sand. Johnny and his dad Randolph can arrange for a boat tour if you want to visit neighboring beaches or explore Soufriere - listening to live music at the bar. The band was local and excellent and made for a fun evening - the room. The room. The room. It's like no other you're likely to experience - the hot tub. Blink and you'll miss it! It's behind the spa and consists of giant, cascading tubs. (The food gets a "meh" from us, but it's more than passable. Stick to local selections, which is what they do best.) Visit Ladera!!!

Okay....High up in the mountains, only 3 walls, a view of the Pitons and ocean that takes your breath every single time you look, tiny gorgeous private pool, and so quiet and relaxing.... I loved this place! (Although there was at least 1 lizard a day in my room, but we made somewhat of a loose truce: you don't actually touch me and I won't smack you. But, I did find it necessary to give the toilet a careful and thorough search EVERY TIME if you follow me...) The food was very good, but not many choices and after being here a week, the island style of cooking everything got a tad old - that, and it was not all-inclusive and on this island, there were not scads of choices. Let's just say that food and drinks were very expensive. Very. I loved the ocean and Piton view from up in the mountains, but the van ride to the beach is a bit tiring. Sorry for the whining: you can't have it all - up on the hill with the killer view or down on the beach. Choose, don't whine! hahaha! So, here is how I saw it: There are lots of beachside rooms everywhere you go, but this is a rare and unique opportunity. This was truly one of those trips of a lifetime and I will never, ever forget.
