Ladera in Soufriere, Saint Lucia

There is no fourth wall in villas at Ladera – instead, there is the jaw-dropping backdrop of the Pitons, two mountainous volcanic spires that attract adventure-seekers from across the world. A faint tropical breeze wafts from the Caribbean Sea far below through netting on a four-poster bed carved from polished tropical hardwood. Incentive to leave your room can be found in chef Nigel Mitchel's creative interpretation of traditional island fare – try the roast conch served with organic vegetables from the neighboring plantation.

Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest. Walk among them on lush grounds that used to be a cocoa plantation. Float under the cascading waterfall of your private plunge pool, watching parrots and orioles drifting on air currents over the treetops. Sip sweet potato and coconut soup at the clifftop open-air restaurant. Watch the stars create an unobstructed canopy over the ocean, spotting constellations on your suite's star chart.

There are a few things you need to know about this resort beside it's beauty. 1. The suites are built into a hillside which means there are lots and lots of steps to climb with no elevator. This is not a bad thing, but if you have challenges walking or walking up/down stairs it's something you should consider. 2. The resort is located in the mountainous portion of St. Lucia and it's on the quieter side of the island. If you're looking for a huge party resort, choose another place. If you're Ok with these two things, I really think you are in for the time of your life! We had a hilltop suite (x4) and the views from our bedroom/living room were absolutely amazing. Our room had a view that looked right between the 2 Piton mountains. The heated pool felt like bathtub water and the small whirlpool was an absolute delight. I was terribly concerned about being exposed to nature with no air conditioning, but after a couple of hours I could see that nature and the temperature would not be an issue. The birds that can enter your room (oddly and gratefully they always stopped in the living area and never came into the bedroom area) have been well trained by the water guns that are supplied in your room and everywhere on the resort where you would eat or drink. The Ladera employees are extremely warm and welcoming and they quickly learn what you like and try to make your stay as wonderful as possible. The Ladera is in the middle of most of the outdoor excursions, so if you're planning to split your stay in St. Lucia between the South and North portions of the island (like we did) I recommend you start in the North and then end your stay in the South and do your excursions when you reach the South part of the island. You'll have a shorter ride to the excursions and to the airport when you're leaving. The food at Ladera was exceptional. We knew everything that was put in front of us was made from scratch based on the taste as well as taking a tour through their on grounds herb and coffee garden. I LOVE lobster and it was in season while we were there and we had it each night. I was never disappointed. The wine selection was great as well. If you're looking for a place to quiet your soul and reconnect with that special someone, this is the place for you. If you have the opportunity to visit and stay in one of the hilltop suites, I recommend you do the following each evening: 1. Release all of your tension 2. Remove all your clothes and inhibitions (in your room :-)) 3. Grab a bottle of your favorite champagne/wine 4. Jump in the private pool and star gaze into the beautiful night sky 5. Turn to your loved one and say "We are extremely lucky to be in this place and with one another". 6. Repeat these steps until you leave Ladera has become my new go to "happy place". I hope you enjoy it as well!!

Words cannot describe this resort. Ladera is absolutely breath-taking. Stay in PR6 and not only do you get the most amazing view of the pitons you also get the most surreal view of the lush rainforest of Soufriere. The staff, the service, the food all 20/10. I had hear great things about Dasheene and it did not disappoint. It was everything I had expected and more. I recommend everyone try one of the rooms at paradise ridge.....So you so much Ladera for having me and I definitely look forward to visiting again.

To wake to a spectacular view, while hearing the humming birds below and smelling the fresh air after a light was a place of restoration and relaxation for my husband and I. The staff were wonderful, warm, seeking to please you and the property was extremely clean and well maintained. We stayed a week and loved every minute. We were there to rest so we didn't leave on any treks but Caroline would surely help you if you wanted the assistance. The driver to and from the airport was wonderful and we will always hold a special place in our heart for this locale!

It's a "take-your-breath away" and "pinch me, I'm dreaming experience." Luxury travel just doesn't get more unique or better than Ladera. My husband and I spent 3 nights at this magnificent site and it wasn't enough time. It was just pure paradise in the middle of a chocolate plantation/rain forest. It's small, quaint, private and everything I want when I plan my escape from real life. No problems with mosquitos at all. The open wall presented some new learning opportunities for us. We benefitted from the following tips from previous travelers: pay extra for the heated pool, request an additional fan at night, run the pool waterfall for more tranquil sleep ambience and get dressed prior to sunset to combat the harmless fruit fly-type bugs. I am already planning my return to paradise, loved and appreciated every minute of my time here. Special thanks to our gracious host at the bar Jermie, who treated us like long-lost family. Melissa in reception/Concierge who immediately helped us when our plane malfunctioned and we needed an extra night stay. (Boo Hoo ;-) ) Thank you to the incredible house-keeping staff who kept our room spotless, the pool cleaning staff, the strong masseuses that came to our room and the lead gardener who was eager to answer any questions I had. One bonus opportunity that we experienced was meeting Holly (daughter of the former owner) who shared many fun tips and stories about this enchanting property. Ladera is truly a best kept secret. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone. ;-)

I definitely had to leave a review after this weekend. My friend and i stayed at PR 6, only one word describes this room "Heaven". It was absolutely an amazing experience having to wake up between the pitons, I'm St. Lucian and i haven't experience anything like it. Thanks to our butlers and staff for treating us with excellent service. Not forgetting dinner at the restaurant, it was everything i hoped for....mouthwatering! After this weekend I'm looking forward to visiting again one day!! Thanks for having me :-)
