Reviews for Sailrock Resort

Amazing boutique getaway in beautiful setting.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed for six days and five nights to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. It came highly recommended from our travel agent and we hadn’t traveled since 2015. The resort is located on South Caicos so an additional flight from the main island of Provo is necessary, But on arrival you are treated like personal guests with a fresh rum drink, and a short tour of the facility. There are two main types of rooms. We opted to go all out and stayed at one of the villas along the Atlantic coast. It’s a beautiful large dwelling with a magnificent view of the Atlantic ocean and a private pool, as well as separate bedroom, living room, and kitchen facilities, washer, and dryer and a small sitting garden. The beach here, however, is not meant for sunbathing. The water is rough and the beach is a little hard to enter, although the views are stunning. Most of the activity centers around what is called the GreatHouse, or the center house which serves as check-in as well as the main dining room. Breakfast and dinner are served here and I felt the food was very good, if not a little expensive, which is to be expected. There was a pool at the greatHouse but we did not see anyone use it for our entire stay. Most likely because most guests are either on excursions or walk or are driven down to the Cove. This is the heart of Sailrock and is a beautiful beach with Crystal clear Caribbean waters. Comfortable lounge chairs are already set up all with individual umbrellas and it is always easy to find a convenient set of chairs. The bartenders from the cove will bring drinks down to your chairs, and you can also walk back up and have lunch at the restaurant there if should you choose. Non-motorized water sports. Kayaking, and snorkeling are offered for free and there are always bicycles available at the greatHouse for bicycle excursions. Other activities, such as couples massages, and and a three hour boating excursion are extra and can be arranged ahead of time in the website of the resort. Every Saturday and Tuesday nights there are bonfires on the beach and dinner is served at the bar restaurant down at the Cove. It provides beautiful picture opportunities. Room service can always be ordered from the dinner menu or the menu at the Cove restaurant . Since the villas are not next to the great house or the Cove, jeeps always available from the staff to bring you to any location. They use the WhatsApp app. All you do is text and they appear. Departure was made easy by the resort staff who gave you all the information you need to know in order to have your luggage picked up and be transported to the small south Caicos airport where you receive your boarding passes for Caribbean Airlines. There were a few negatives. Our air conditioning unit leaked in the living room on the first day, but was able to be fixed. The air conditioner in our bedroom leaked on our last day and was unable to be fixed. We were offered a move to another villa, but since it was our last day, we stayed at our own place. The manager did tell me that the resort has been open since approximately 2018 but Covid put them behind their plans and you get the feeling that the resort is just starting to be built up to where they want it to be. In addition, our previous travel to the Caribbean have been largely to the southern Caribbean. Places like Aruba Grenada, Antigua and Cancun. One difference that travelers should understand is that the water, while Crystal clear, is often colder in islands of the northern Caribbean Turks and the Bahamas, even at this time of year, then in the more equatorial areas. I found it difficult to swim in the ocean for a long period of time due to the temperature of the water and the somewhat stiff winds. The winds are mixed blessing. They do cool you off from the hotter sun and eliminate insects, but are constantly present as you emerge from the water. I had somewhat expected the bathwater type temperatures that I had experienced previously in those other islands, and the water temperatures were surprisingly cool. Also, if you are afraid of flying or claustrophobic, the shuttlecraft from Provo to South Caicos could pose a problem. Security is also very tight. Our carry-on bags were manually searched at the small airport on South Caicos at departure, in addition to going through security again at the main airport on Provo. If you’re used to TSA pre-check in the states, it is vastly different at least in Turks and Caicos. In summary, it’s a beautiful resort for a special excursion. If I return to the Caribbean, it probably would be to a more southern island largely because of the water temperatures and the additional travel required to get to Sailrock. I would never not recommend this resort, however.

10 days was too long

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Had an enjoyable stay at sailrock The staff are generally excellent, especially the guys at the beach/ the cove beach bar/restaurant where nothing is too much trouble We came from UK and only saw one other lots of brits, most guests are from the US which is obviously a much shorter hop, whereas for the same flight time brits could go to maldives, thailand etc There is nowhere else to eat or drink locally, you need a taxi to go into town and they make that very very expensive, considering the distance. The bikes are not in great shape, so i wouldn't risk the 45 minute cycle into town. The resort is very expensive with the current exchange rate for brits, the menu price advertised then has 3 taxes/fees on top (so plus 10%, 12% & 9.25%) and then gratuity on top of that. It was a good way of cutting down our alcohol intake The Caicos bank side of resort (the cove) has lovely fine sandy beach and turquoise water and is super shallow, however it also has small jelly fish sitting on the bottom as you walk in and a few people got a light sting (nothing bad), the bigger issue for me is the bottom is full of mud and the occasional big rock to stub your toe on. I wore sea shoes quite often to avoid this. Its also very shallow, so to get your shoulders under you need to sit down. Its not great for snorkelling as no reef. The hobbie cat was great fun, albeit they only had one sail, so only one hobbie was working. I didn't wear a life jacket because water appeared to be 3 foot deep max. They also have kayaks and SUP, but beware of the offshore wind- it makes it a lot harder coming back, but you could always jump off 500 feet out and walk back- its that shallow The Atlantic side beach Hardly anyone goes this side, but we enjoyed long walks up the 2 miles beach every day. When we arrived other guests warned us about the rubbish, but it was was worse than we could have imagined, it washes up every day from the Atlantic. Being someone who cant sit still i decided to clean the beach myself (all 2 miles of it) and put it into big piles for the staff to collect, after quite a lot of prompting and reminding they finally did collect it all on my last day. Its not their rubbish it washes in from the sea, most appeared to be off fishing boats and mainly plastic, but i still felt as the only resort on that beach they should at least regularly clean the rubbish, they clean the seaweed daily so why not the rubbish I hope everyone appreciates a few useful tips above and i hope you too enjoy your stay at sailrock like we did In conclusion for us 10 days was too much in one place (maybe that's just us) there are only so many items on the menu, the do make some changes to dinner menu but not breakfast and lunch

Loved it

This place was incredible. We stayed at one of the villas and it was absolutely gorgeous. The customer service was fantastic (Especially Ben and Putra). Everyone was friendly and genuine. The beach was mellow and not ever crowded. There were always chairs and umbrellas available. Even the rest of the people that stayed there were great. (Also the most well behaved children, which was a treat.) My only critique was that the food was a bit mediocre. For the amount of money it cost to stay here, I kind of expected better. However we did venture to town to the one and only "restaurant" on the island (and by restaurant, I mean backyard bbq), Triple J's and had some of the best jerk chicken I have ever had. (And I don't even like jerk chicken. So go, trust me, you will not be disappointed.) However one of the gentleman driving us home had clearly been drinking (not Big Daddy), so that was a little disconcerting. Other than that, I would 100% go back. It was amazing. And the pillows! SO COMFY.

Sail rock South Caicos

I can’t even explain how incredible and special this resort is. From the start with our contact with Jade and Putra… they catered to everything we could have wanted. One has to take a small jet or boat to South Caicos. We came in late due to plane delays in Atlanta, but the staff was there to welcome us like we were celebrities. Their warmth and love was evident from the start. Putra welcomed us with blue ocean specialty drinks on arrival to the resort. We got checked in and got upgraded to a beautiful two bedroom villa on the ocean. Great way to celebrate our 29th anniversary! So incredibly private. It seemed we had the whole beach to ourselves, Except for the wild donkeys which we loved to see. We stayed for 4 nights. The couples massage on the ridge overlooking the island was fantastic. Earlier we caught fish and found conch with David and Leo. The resort offers a private chef dinner which we did and it was amazing! Chef Prasad from Bhutan, cooked our Conch multiple ways, cooked our fish grilled and fried Whole and beef tenderloin. He was fantastic! We even had him cook us some authentic Indian curry the next night.. So so good! Paul from Saint Lucia was great on helping us with meals and the wine list. They have alternating dinners on the beach with a bonfire or at he main house on the ridge. Ben from south Caicos told us about some incredible exercise activities. We hiked through the island, biked To Jerry camp, kayaked with nurse sharks and rays. We even found conch on our own there. We let those go free. No one can understand unless you have been on your own without humans in the wild. There was no one where we were on the island. Andre the general manger was so courteous. Everyone and everything was perfect. I can’t say enough about this property and people, except we are likely to renew our vows there in a year here.

Stunning Location, Nice Resort with a Few Misses

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Instead of a single overall rating, I am going to rate the different aspects of the Sailrock Resort experience so people considering can get the most insights from our experience. Location (A+) - the location of the resort on South Caicos Island is stunning. There are crystal clear shallow blue waters. In most places the water is only a few feet deep so you can walk out in the waters easily. I had expected it to be tropical but instead it is a more arid and barren landscape. There are no palm trees and not a lot of blooming plant varieties. Most of the plants are low growing shrubs. The landscape reminded me a lot of the hill country of Texas with low scrub type plants. Temperatures were very mild, 70s to low 80s. There used to be salt marsh harvesting here, now abandoned, but left behind are the donkeys they used for labor. So you will periodically see wild donkeys wandering about and you will see regular "evidence" of their presence on the ground. Resort Buildings (A) - the resort is fairly new so all of the buildings were in good shape and I did not see any issues from poor maintenance or lack of repair. There is a main building called the "Main House" that has the front desk type area, a small library with computer access, books, and a few games, a gift shop, a gym, and the main restaurant where you will be eating breakfast and dinner. The eating areas are all open air so you are essentially eating outside for all meals. This was not bad most of the time but there were some nights we had quite a lot of flies buzzing around our tables which made me wish they had fly traps or something to keep them at bay. All of the buildings are separated by stone walking paths or dirt/paved roads. So you will be walking between them or you can request a ride. The resort uses WhatsApp as the main way for guests to communicate with hotel staff, so you can message and request a ride from one location to another. The will dispatch a staff member to you with a Polaris utility vehicle to pick you up and transport you. We found this service to be very hit or miss (more on that in the service section). The overall vibe of the resort is peace and tranquility. It is generally very quiet and things are separated enough to have a lot of visual privacy. You don't see a lot of other guests while you are there as they will be spread out enough across the property. If you are looking for a place with a lot of "action", this is not it. If you want to feel like you are mostly alone on an island, this place provides that vibe. Beaches (B) - The resort spans the entire breadth of the South Caicos peninsula so there is a beachside bar/restaurant on the west coast, and a beach villas along the beach on the east cost (called Long Beach). The west coast beach (called Sailrock Beach) is nicely groomed and the water here is more like a lake than ocean with practically no waves and little wind. It is very clear that this is the area the resort expects guests to go to spend time at the bench. They setup beach chairs here with umbrellas. This is also where the water sports are with one and two person kayaks, paddle boards, and two Hobie sail boats. While they have two sail boats, while we were there only one had its sail up so you had to wait most times for the boat to be available to use it. Since the west side is so calm, their often is little wind, so the conditions do not always support using the sail boat which was a disappointment for me personally as the sailing was the thing I most wanted to do. The east coast beach faces the direct ocean so it has more traditional beach waves and is quite windy. Sailing would have been great on this beach but none is available. There is a single entry point to the east beach near the main house that they call a boardwalk. This is simply a stone and wood path to the east bench. At the beach itself, I only say two beach chairs set out while I was there. I rarely saw people on the east beach, and if there were, they would typically be walking along the shore and not in the water. The beach here is not well maintained and I saw a lot of debris mixed in with the sand, including small pieces of broken plastic that have presumably washed ashore. Unfortunately all the beach villas are along the east beach, so if you stay in a beach village, you will oddly not be using the beach in front of your villa but instead calling for a ride to the west beach where all the beach amenities are. Beach Villa (B) - we stayed in the lowest tier, two bedroom beachfront villa. It was BV16 which was the last villa on the south east side of the property. They were working to build more villas further south, and there was a villa next to us that was still under construction while we were there. This resulted in hammering and sounds of workers at our villa which was disappointing. The villas are very nice and modern, and setup to provide privacy. The whole villa has a very open and airy feel which feels right for a resort property. Furnishings were nice and in great condition overall. Service came in twice a day to service the villa, once typically while at breakfast for the more traditional housekeeping service and again during dinner for turndown service. The staff would leave a snack at the latter like a plate of cookies. Bottled water was also provided daily so by the end of our stay we had amassed a large volume of unused water. You will have to request ice from the main house if you want that, which we did to bring back ice buckets to have ice while at the villa. The villa had a full size washer and dryer, full size refrigerator, dishwasher, stove and oven, microwave, and kitchen sink area. As nice as the villa was, there were a few surprising misses here...while the villa had its own pool, this pool was not heated so it was too cold to swim in. This defeats the purpose of having your own private pool at the villa if it is too cold to use. The other miss here not show on the website photos is that they have erected black fabric barriers between the pool and beach dunes. I assume this is block sand blowing into the pools but is also blocks the view from the villa to the beach/ocean which was very disappointing. The water pressure at our villa was set to 30psi which is incredibly low. Water at the faucets was ok, but shower pressure was extremely low. You will not have any luxurious showers here. I had to stand about six inches from the wall of the shower to stay under the little bit of flow there was. Standard residential home pressure is usually 50-70psi for reference. One of the two bathrooms did not provide a shelf in the shower to hold your shampoo, soap, etc so if using that bathroom you had to just sit those items on the floor. The other big omission at the beachfront villa is that there was no path from your villa, over the dunes, to the beach. So you really couldn't access the beach from your villa like you would expect for a beach front property. You could forge your own path across the dune area which was around 50-100 feet wide, but there was scrub foliage, briars, ocean debris, and sandburs in that in-between area to get through. It would be like blazing your own path through the woods versus taking an intended trail. We did it once and I returned with scratches on my legs and sandburs stuck in the bottom of my flip flops. If you do manage to walk down to the beach from your villa, surprisingly there is no place to wash your feet off at your villa, another pretty standard beach villa offering not present here. The villa patio did provide a hammock, two chaise lounges, and a four seat table but surprisingly there was no beach umbrella so it was impossible to be on the patio without being full sun. One of the things I was looking forward to was that the villas advertised having outdoor showers. Our villa had two bedrooms and two full baths, so it did provide two separate private patio areas with outdoor showers. We did not use these however because they outdoor showers did not have shower heads, they simple had a stone trough that water spilled out of at the top. This made the water come out in a fat stream that would splash all over the place. One website picture showed the outdoor shower having a large rain shower head but ours did not have this. Wifi (A+) - perhaps a strange category to include but in our present device centric world, having good wifi is very much an amenity to keep the family happy. I was impressed with the wifi service provided and its coverage. We seemed to have good coverage all over the resort grounds which is indeed important since you need it to contact the staff via WhatsApp if you need a ride or anything. Food (A) - the onsite food options are the Main House, centrally located on the resort property, the Cove (located at the west beach), room service, or private chef. We did not use the latter two so can't comment on those. The Main House is where breakfast and dinner are served, while the Cove is the sole lunch spot. Food was good. The dinner menu changed daily but the breakfast and lunch menus are the same each day. They did have beach bonfire night while we were there where dinner was provided at the Cove instead of the Main House. The bonfire was really more of a small campfire but they did provide all the makings to make your own smores by the fire. You have options for tap, flat, or sparkling water but take note you will be charged for flat and sparkling water. Speaking of charged, the average cost of dinner for four for us was $300/night and breakfast was $100/day. While the food quality was indeed good, I felt the cost was a bit on the high side, even for a resort. One thing that contributes greatly to the high food cost is fees. At each meal there is a 10% service charge, 12% government tax, and 9.25% facilities fee. This does not include the tip. So you have the cost of the food, plus 30% in fees, plus tip with every meal. I don't know if these fees are mandated by the government, but they seemed overly gratuitous in my humble opinion. If you are addicted to soda like I am, you will pay $5 for each can of coke you consume. A rum punch will set you back around $16. A bottle of Evian water is $10. A main dinner entree will be approx -$30-$50. Excursions (A) - the resort offers several paid activities and excursions. We did two of these: a Hobie cat sailboat lesson and a three hour boat trip. The sailboat lesson took place on the resort at the west beach and was provided by a young staff member. The sailboat seats four total, so three of my family could go. It lasted for an hour and they did a good job teaching how to sail the Hobie cat. The lesson itself was very reasonably priced at $75. The second thing we did was a three hour boating adventure. This is more pricey at $275/person or $1100 for our family of four with fees. For this they take you by van from the resort into the town of Cockburn to the marina there. A two person crew then takes you out on a boat to see three main things: you first go out in the bay to an area that is about 1-2' deep and you get out of the boat to walk around and pickup sand dollars, sea biscuits, and starfish. We saw sting rays as well. Then they take you to an island that is undeveloped but has a ton of iguanas on it. You get off the boat and walk to the top of this little island. While walking, iguanas will come out of the scrub to greet you. It is clear they are used to being fed by people as they were coming up to us readily expecting a snack. Our guide fed them as we walked. The third thing you do on the boat is they take you to a deeper area and let you snorkel. Here we saw small fish, sting rays, and small sharks. Overall the boat trip was great and a highlight experience for the trip. The crew was very friendly and told us a lot about the things we say and places we visited. The only disappointment with the boat trip is that the resort provides sack lunches for the trip and drinks. Despite them asking for our order in advance, our sandwiches were wrong and the drinks that were provided were not what we had requested. Service (B-) - this is another area where I felt the resort had several surprising misses. The staff we interacted with were all friendly, and service could be had, but in many cases you had to seek our service as it would often sit on the sidelines. You had wait staff for every meal but the service was varied. Sometimes they would come check on you during a meal, others you would rarely see them. For most of my meals, it would take 45-60 mins from the time I ordered for the food to come out. Maybe another 30-45 mins for the check to come once requested. At one meal, I asked for the check and the server never did return. After waiting for 45 minutes I flagged down a different server and told them that our server had disappeared. That different server brought us the check but it was incorrect. It was corrected but we didn't see our original server again. At another meal, the food came out relatively quickly, 20-30 mins, but our drinks came out after the food arrived. I don't know if this is a culture or "island time" issue, but most meals would take 2+ hrs with most of that time waiting for food or the check. Since the resort is spread out quite a bit, you will either do a lot of walking or need to request rides. The request ride part is easy, you message the staff using WhatsApp, they acknowledge and someone shows up with a five seat Polaris utility vehicle. This was another miss area. About 50% of the time, the person would take so long to come get us, we would just end up making the 10-15 walk to our destination. Sometimes they would respond and say someone would be there in 5 minutes and then they would show up 15-20 minutes later. There was one time where they were supposed to be coming to get us and after waiting 15 minutes we just walked. Once we got to the main house, there were two unused Polaris vehicles in front. No idea why they had not come to get us like they said. It seemed like they only had 2-3 of these larger utility vehicles but they had a whole fleet of two seated maintenance vehicles. I would say they need more people and vehicles to give guests rides. Another service miss area is the beach and resort pool areas. When you are at the beach or pool at the main house, no one will come by and ask if you need anything. In my experience, this is pretty standard to be sitting by the pool and have a staff member come by to offer a drink, food, etc. Here you have to go seek out the staff to get this service. At the beach, you walk over to the Cove bar to get service, and at the main house pool area, you would need to walk up to main house bar to get service. One day we came back from the west beach to swim at the Main House pool (which is heated so usable versus the unheated private pool at our villa), and someone had left a giant mess on several of the pool side chairs. While we could hear the staff chatting up at the Main House, no staff came down to the pool area to see and address this mess. I eventually went up and told someone, at which time they came out and cleaned it up. So service is there, it just tends to not be proactive and intentional about engaging the guests where they are and you need to seek it out. Travel Experience (D) - to get to Sailrock, you first have to fly into the Providenciales airport on the main Turks and Caicos island. This is an airport in desperate need of updating. It is old, too small, and needs to be brought up to modern standards. There are no jet bridges, you walk down a ladder from the plane, outside on the tarmac, and into the airport. When we got there it was raining, so we got wet when departing the plan and walking in. Our baggage was soaking wet as well. There tends to be weather related delays between the US and Turk and Caicos so plan ahead for that as well. Our flight from Atlanta ended up having two hours in weather delays when flying there. When flying out of the Providenciales airport, there were simply way more people in the airport than it was built to accommodate with the main departures area overly filled with people making it hard to get around and nutty when flights were being boarded. The other thing to note is that the check-in area where you would check-in your baggage opens late. For example, we had a 2PM flight from Turks and Caicos on Delta but the Delta check-in counter did not open until 11:30AM. Our flight from Sailrock got us to Providenciales at 9:30 AM so we had to stand around for two hours with our luggage before we could check it and proceed through security. During this waiting time, I would recommend a small cafe there called Gilley's. It provided good, basic food, friendly service, and free wifi. The airport offers a Sky Pass fast track service to speed your trip through security which I recommend to make the customs process easier when arriving. For departure, this service speeds you through security similar to TSA precheck and also gives you access to a tiny VIP lounge which is a much nicer area to wait than the main departure area. Although oddly the vip lounge only offers a single bathroom accommodating one person at a time. These fast track services are quite pricey however, about $75/person on the way there and about $125/person on the way out. Going to Sailrock specifically means you have to take another flight from Providenciales airport to South Caicos. This flight is coordinated by the resort directly which is nice, but it makes for something you need to take into consideration when planning your layovers at Providenciales. This flight for us was a very old small twin engine plane that seated about 8 people on the way to Sailrock and a much newer, and larger twin engine plan coming back from Sailrock. The airport at South Caicos is very small with a single runway with no taxi ways. It was an interesting experience when landing to have the plane do a 180 on the runway and taxi back up it to the small terminal building. That building is new, they told us about three months old, and it was extremely nice. That was a nice experience coming into and out of that tiny South Caicos airport. In conclusion, the location of Sail Rock is stunning and I would recommend visiting Turks and Caicos. The Sail rock resort is a newer property with nice accommodations, good food, and a relaxing "get away from it all" atmosphere. Depending on what your used to with service, you may be disappointed in some areas, but the overall experience was still positive.
