Cobblers Cove in Speightstown, Barbados

Wind rustles through white plantation shutters at Cobblers Cove, a country manor on the west coast of Barbados where life carries an air of its colonial past. Afternoons pause for English tea in the Great House pavilion, tropical fruit accompanying delicate scones. Each morning, resident fisherman Barker sets out for the day’s catch – join him if you'd like – to be served up at the restaurant awarded best in the country by the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association.

Lounge by the turquoise sea, lost in the West Indies’s pace of life. Take a kayak to the sand bar and drift away the morning. Catch an afternoon cricket game. In the balmy breeze, sip on a Bajan rumrunner made with muddled banana and garnished with a hibiscus flower. Dine on olive-crusted mahi-mahi with cinnamon plantains at an oceanfront table.

My mother and myself visited the hotel for a week long stay, all the staff are so friendly, welcoming and extremely helpful. We also went two years ago and it was equally good then. We've visited Barbados several times and I think this is my favourite hotel. Sometimes the service at dinner could be a little slow if the restaurant was busy, but the food was very tasty and it was nice to sit and chill out with the sound of the waves. I had a water skiing lesson every day (included in price) which was amazing! The rooms are beautifully decorated and love the complimentary drinks supplied and REN skincare products. We will be returning ASAP.

What a great place. Had a very warm welcome when we arrived. we were early, and our rooms were not yet available but, we were given a welcome drink, showed where we could change, and made very comfortable. The general manager, Will, came and introduced himself, and invited us to his cocktail party that evening. It was excellent! The room was ready early, we had a garden view. the gardens were truly wonderful. Full of exotic plants, humming birds and doves. The location could not have been better. Right on the beach, with water-sports (some complementary) all to hand. We had a very god lunch in the beach side restaurant. The staff were very efficient and friendly and helped make it very special. There were very pleasant surprises such as complementary tea/coffee making in the room, together with a mini-bar stocked with a starter selection of complimentary drinks. Beer, Coke, water etc! All the little touches that make a hotel special were taken into consideration. I wish we'd been there for longer, and look forward to going back soon.

This was our second stay and we were very worried as it had been some time since our first trip, that development might have over shadowed Cobblers Cove (named after the local name for the Frigate bird which can be seen from the restaurant) but we had no need to be concerned, from the moment we were greeted by Geoff and taken for our welcome drink - we were back in heaven! It is a real wrench to leave. It is everything you imagine a tropical holiday to be, reefs of fish within even my inadequate swimming capability, sandy beaches, turquoise sea, snorkelling with Turtles. It has the best Cocktails on the Island and the Cobblers Cooler is strong but amazingly good, the daiquiris could be improved with more real fruit and a bit less syrup? It was very much let down by housekeeping and it was a bit of a game looking for what had been forgotten by them after their visit (flannel, beach towel etc.) also a brush and dust pan for guests may be useful as they never seemed to move shoes to clean the sand which dried and collected by the door if footwear was left there.

The west coast of Barbados provides you with a rather contradictory holiday. The wonderful chaos of the coastal road is in stark contract to the relaxed Baijans and the idyllic beaches that justify the cliched photographs of white, sandy beaches and palm trees.Combined with the partying and watersports that happens at beach bars and rum shacks and you have a perfect storm. We stayed at Cobblers Cove and it was our first time there. The gentle welcome and cold towel on arrival set the tone. We were invited in by the relaxed but efficient staff. Our room, again, was calm. Excellently decorated, some smart touches and mercifully cool. We're in the food business and it's an important part of our holiday. Yes you must explore the many and various restaurants on Barbados but you should also eat at Cobblers. The breakfast is a highlight. On that note eating out on the island is not cheap but that is well-documented. Make use of the watersports - skiiing, diving, swimming with turtles - all at Cobblers. It's a quiet place - you'll feel awkward with noisy children and it's not for the all-inclusive (unadventurous) brigade. We'll be going back.

Tucked away on the West coast this is a little gem of a place to stay. Situated in lovely gardens, the property has it's own award winnig Camelot restaurant. The welcomeing staff are attentive, helpful, and caring. The accommodation is comfortable, spacious and attractively appointed. There are activities including water sports. Have stayed here twice and booked again for next year.
