Cobblers Cove in Speightstown, Barbados

Wind rustles through white plantation shutters at Cobblers Cove, a country manor on the west coast of Barbados where life carries an air of its colonial past. Afternoons pause for English tea in the Great House pavilion, tropical fruit accompanying delicate scones. Each morning, resident fisherman Barker sets out for the day’s catch – join him if you'd like – to be served up at the restaurant awarded best in the country by the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association.

Lounge by the turquoise sea, lost in the West Indies’s pace of life. Take a kayak to the sand bar and drift away the morning. Catch an afternoon cricket game. In the balmy breeze, sip on a Bajan rumrunner made with muddled banana and garnished with a hibiscus flower. Dine on olive-crusted mahi-mahi with cinnamon plantains at an oceanfront table.

This was probably our seventh visit. We've been coming here for more than 30 years so clearly this place is a little special for us. It has the feel and style of an English country house boutique hotel set in a spectacular tropical garden on the edge of the Caribbean. There are just 40 apartments so it's small scale, intimate and very calm. There has been an ongoing programme of refurbishment over the years so it manages to stay fresh and stylish while retaining its unique style and taking full advantage of its beach side location. The apartments are comfortable, well-appointed and each has its own deck or balcony overlooking the sea or the garden. We happen to prefer the garden view because it tends to be more attractive and exotic than the sunbathers on beds in front of the beach. Service is impeccable and you have the feeling that there may be more staff than guests. The rooms are serviced twice a day at this time of year with a rather quaint bed 'turn down' service every evening at dusk. This comes after another daily Cobblers ritual: afternoon tea on the terrace with exquisite sandwiches and the world's best coconut macaroons. It's quiet but nowadays seems to offer local entertainment most evenings, including a lady singer with remarkable tone, range and repertoire who comes in on Saturday night. There are also free watersports for hotel guests but many of us are too far past our prime to make the most of that offer. Sorry to see that the hotel now only accepts children ‘by invitation’. Ours had a great time here when they were little.

This is our first visit to this hotel. It was recommended by our travel agent as perfect place to come and relax at. Where to start ? We stayed in a very nice Ocean Front Suite called Bagatelle Which was positioned facing the sea with classic views of the sea and this small resort. The room consisted of a good size living room with a small sink and refrigerator. The bedroom was generous with air conditioning available. Adjacent was a bathroom with a shower. Towels changed each day toiletries available for everyday use. Very clean beds made up and turned down with good quality Bed linen. Excellent menu in the restaurant consistently high quality food. Fish and meat plus a vegetarian choice always on the menu Breakfast included in the price per night. No hidden charges menu priced to include service and local taxes. Managers cocktail party ( generous) each Tuesday night followed by a theme evening menu. Free entertainment most nights at a perfect pitch not overdone so it added to the general atmosphere. Special mention to The Jazz band the Arturo Tappin Trio Discrete very talented Saxophone Clarinet Flute Piano/ Base guitarist very skilled entertainers Good cocktail bar next to hotel swimming pool with an extensive range of beverages to suit all. Afternoon tea every day at 4pm is a must perfect finger sandwiches and cakes . The Water sports are run by Bradley and his team of very able instructors lots of good advice free use of flippers Goggles etc and unmotorised boats etc Most unusually free trips into the bay in front of the hotel to see the baby turtles and many fish. Also free short waterskiing trips. Whilst snorkelling I saw a large Stingray feeding on the sand near the beach lots to do if you are active or plenty of doing nothing if you prefer that type of holiday . Many of the staff have worked in the hotel for many years which is one of its strengths as they demonstrate to more recent staff the need to enhance people’s experience of this very high quality hotel. Lots and lots of smiles from all of the staff and great service My wife and I are very pleased we came I highly recommend you visit Enjoy 😊

Attention to detail is unparalleled: something beautiful to see wherever you look, delicious food, warm and efficient staff. Highlight has to be having an old-fashioned Cobblers tea with homemade lemonade, scones and perfectly cut sandwiches, in a lush tropical garden while looking out at the bright blue ocean!

We stayed at half term for a week with the family and had two beautiful ocean view rooms with the most comfortable beds. The hotel is small and quaint. The children waterskied every day and swam with turtles. Thanks to Virgil we had quite a large bar bill but it was great sitting round the bar talking to all the lovely staff about the island. It's a family run hotel and the general manager was very helpful with any queries we had. I will stay there again and would highly recommend. It is a very special hotel.

Cobblers Cove is truly charming small hotel. The service it attentive without being obtrusive. Nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are tastefully decorated and very comfortable and quiet. Many of the staff have worked at the hotel for decades. There is no better place to stay in Barbados if you are looking for refined charm.
