Cobblers Cove in Speightstown, Barbados

Wind rustles through white plantation shutters at Cobblers Cove, a country manor on the west coast of Barbados where life carries an air of its colonial past. Afternoons pause for English tea in the Great House pavilion, tropical fruit accompanying delicate scones. Each morning, resident fisherman Barker sets out for the day’s catch – join him if you'd like – to be served up at the restaurant awarded best in the country by the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association.

Lounge by the turquoise sea, lost in the West Indies’s pace of life. Take a kayak to the sand bar and drift away the morning. Catch an afternoon cricket game. In the balmy breeze, sip on a Bajan rumrunner made with muddled banana and garnished with a hibiscus flower. Dine on olive-crusted mahi-mahi with cinnamon plantains at an oceanfront table.

This was our third visit To Cobblers Cove & as always it never disappoints, whilst we were lucky to have the "Camelot Suite" which provides you with absolute privacy. A lovely terrace, with shutters, which overlooks the sea, provided with an outdoor kitchen, two sun loungers, table with 4 chairs. Slide the doors back & you encounter a stunning bedroom, beautifully furnished & accompanied with an extremely spacious en-suite bathroom, with separate shower & a free standing bath. The "icing on the cake" is the terrace upstairs with another outdoor kitchen, double sun loungers & a spacious 3ft deep plunge pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea ...dreamy !!! Where we were pleased ,was the restaurant with the new chef Jason Joseph much so that we cancelled dinner at two other famous restaurants, whilst we wish him continued success here. The waiting staff are all a credit to "Cobblers Cove" carefully managed by Keith. Not forgetting Virgil the barman who mixes a brilliant rum punch!!! They still provide a welcoming, complimentary afternoon tea, whilst the beach is a joy to behold. A "Timeless Classic that pays homage to it's colonial roots which oozes both charm & grace" We have the "Holiday Blues" & sincerely hope to return!!!

I'm a regular visitor to Barbados but normally stay in a private villa. Last visit in December we stayed at nearby Schooner Bay but popped in regularly to Cobblers Cove for drinks and meals. It was lovely so this time I decided to stay here. The hotel is totally charming. Its very discreet from the road but as you enter through reception you come out into beautiful immaculately kept tropical gardens which lead you down the path to the gorgeous great house painted in a stunning pink. Beautiful!!. The rooms are all suites and are well appointed. You have your lovely terrace overlooking the gardens or the azure Caribbean sea, a sitting room area and of course a beautiful bedroom. The rooms are kept immaculately clean by the housekeeping staff. I stayed in Marley suite for 12 nights and was very grateful as we had received an upgrade. There is a decking area for sunbathing and also an area overlooking the lovely pool, the sunbeds must be the most comfortable beds I have ever come across. To the north of the decking is the most beautiful tranquil beach for swimming from or for an early morning stroll towards Speightstown. No large hotels or crowded beaches here !!! Just peace and quiet unlike some other Barbados beaches. The staff come round every morning with complimentary fresh fruit and cold drinks , a very nice touch. In the afternoon at 4pm, complimentary Afternoon tea is served at the great house and includes tea sandwiches and cakes another attention to detail which you don't get at a lot of hotels. The hotel restaurant Camelot has a lovely atmosphere in the evening and serves some of the best cuisine on the island. From the moment you arrive at reception you will feel welcome, all the staff are absolutely wonderfull, they all seem very happy and proud of their hotel and are definitely a credit to Cobblers Cove and to the island of Barbados. So if you are looking for a quaint "English country house meets Caribbean" style hotel that is totally charming, relaxing , great food and employs the most friendly people then choose Cobblers Cove.

Stayed at Cobblers Cove in November with our three young children. Although there were no kids programs running at the time our children were treated exceptionally well and the kitchen was always great at making sure they were happy! The beach was a big hit and the pool was tons of fun. Easy to get a driver to take you into town or out to dinner. The hotel could not have been better! We stayed in a two bedroom suite which worked out perfectly for our needs.

Very nice restaurant in a great boutique style hotel with an amazing view and private beach. Good burgers, wine list and service make this place a great spot to stop in for lunch or dinner whether you're staying here or not.

We had an overall lovely stay at Cobbler's Cove. The grounds are beautiful and we loved sitting on our balcony, listening to the birds and frogs and enjoying the view of the leaf canopy in the morning. The pool area is also lovely - a nice deep pool and lots of really comfy loungers with a view over the ocean. The rooms are in the process of being refurbished and, while our room had not yet been updated, it was very pleasant. We got to see the newly done rooms and they are beautiful. I had a lovely paddleboard one morning and used the complimentary snorkel to swim with the turtles just off the shore. We also had a boat cruise down the coast on the hotel's little whaler. Jeff, who greeted us when we arrived, and the Guest Services manager, Richard, were really wonderful to us and truly made us feel special and at home. The GM's daughters were working in the little boutique while they were on school holiday and were charming. It is a great location - quiet and peaceful but an easy taxi ride to Holetown and nearby restaurants. We loved walking down the beach to Speightstown for a sandwich at Orange Street Grocery. I would definitely go back. All that said, there are a few areas for improvement or to be aware of as you book. First, our room (Flagstaff) was near the road and was a bit noisy - so I would avoid it when booking. The bed was also rather hard - we should have said something because when I mentioned it to Richard at the end of the stay, he said they would have fixed it (and I'm sure they would have). So don't be shy to ask if you have the same issue. Second, while most of the staff were lovely, a few could have been more friendly - we sometimes felt as though we were a bit of an imposition. I don't need people sucking up to me, but a smile or some sort of personal service goes a long way, especially in such an intimate hotel. Third, we had a delicious grilled fish when we arrived that hit the spot perfectly - and the rum punches are great. But some of the food we had was a bit bland and I think there are better places to eat in the area. I would encourage guests to explore the many local restaurants - low-key as well as fine dining - as there are many wonderful spots across the island (Fish-Pot, Oisten's Fish Fry, the Cliff, Orange Street Grocer). Finally - and this isn't the hotel's fault - there were a few couples who just had no control over their children. It's a small pool area and not really a place for kids to be cannon-balling and competing over splash size. Quite a few guests were visibly annoyed and I heard that Cobbler's is thinking of changing the rules to prohibit young children. I personally hope they don't do that. Plenty of parents are able to explain to their children what behavior is appropriate in a quiet, small hotel, and they shouldn't be penalized. There were some really lovely, well-behaved children there with considerate parents. But I do think the hotel should explain to guests with children at booking that this isn't the place for boisterous behavior or perhaps impose an adults-only time period in the pool to allow other guests to have a quiet period to nap and relax. All that said - we would love to go back to Cobblers and see Richard, Jeff, and some of the other wonderful staff, swim with the turtles, and enjoy the quiet canopy of rustling leaves again and hope to do so before too long.
