Cobblers Cove in Speightstown, Barbados

Wind rustles through white plantation shutters at Cobblers Cove, a country manor on the west coast of Barbados where life carries an air of its colonial past. Afternoons pause for English tea in the Great House pavilion, tropical fruit accompanying delicate scones. Each morning, resident fisherman Barker sets out for the day’s catch – join him if you'd like – to be served up at the restaurant awarded best in the country by the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association.

Lounge by the turquoise sea, lost in the West Indies’s pace of life. Take a kayak to the sand bar and drift away the morning. Catch an afternoon cricket game. In the balmy breeze, sip on a Bajan rumrunner made with muddled banana and garnished with a hibiscus flower. Dine on olive-crusted mahi-mahi with cinnamon plantains at an oceanfront table.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time at cobblers this week. It is situated on a fabulous beach with turquoise waters, wonderful fish and turtles and the most beautiful sunsets. The gardens are stunning, the cocktails are excellent, the food delicious and it is just simply a lovely peaceful place to relax in colonial Barbados charm. Staff are wonderful and the kitchen was able to produce an absolutely stunning bajan fish curry as well as many other more European dishes. That and the tuna tartare were the best dishes of the week in my book. The hotel seems to be in safe hands with Will Oakley. Thanks for looking after us so well.

We spent a week at Cobblers Cove on honeymoon. We were greeted warmly and shown to our room with a welcome drink to fill out paperwork rather than having to hang around at reception after a tiring journey...good idea! Our suite was simple and spacious not exactly luxurious but still charming. The staff were all attentive and pleasant although occasionally got our order wrong, which was corrected each time. The hotel has a serene ambiance. I had noted other reviewers mentioning the number of older guests. I felt there was a mix of ages although there were probably slightly more of retirement age . We are in our 40s but we weren't the youngest so don't be put off by other reviewers comments . We thoroughly enjoyed the setting. The gardens were fabulous. The stretch of beach by the hotel was beautiful. We enjoyed the complimentary boat rides. The food was delicious, lots of fresh fish. If you want a chilled out , relaxing holiday this is a wonderful pretty place to stay. The low key live music was a really nice touch too.

An evening meal on the terrace is an experience to treasure. From the moment you arrive to see the salmon pink faƧade and brilliant white shutters, you know you are in for a treat. Entering the restaurant, that overlooks the gently lapping aqua Caribbean, through the old-style colonial day rooms, expectations are high, and we were not disappointed. This is beautiful, truly charming hotel. The restaurant menu, wine list and service were totally appropriate; the food, wine and caring and attentive staff ensured that everything would be up to a high standard.

We adored the place with great food, water sports included and excellent customer service. Speightstown is nothing to rave about and taxis are readily available through the hotel to visit restaurants and shops.

A very quaint hotel where you are initially greeted by a very friendly receptionist and manager. The rooms are well furnished and airy but to get light into the room also allows insects in as there is no glass. There is a little kitchenette that is most welcome for making your own early morning tea or coffee. The sun beds around the pool are both plentiful and comfortable but you are limited to one towel per person that you carry down from your room. On one occasion we left our beds, due to rain, only to return and to find our towels had disappeared. We were told we had to go back to our rooms to get others, but that would only be possible if Housekeeping had been. This is not a big issue but at the same time it's not what one would expect from such a hotel. We found the bar staff friendly but the restaurant staff less so and not as attentive as perhaps again one might expect. The owner was a very friendly and amenable chap and went out of his way to meet, greet and satisfy his guests needs. His wife was also very friendly. Our stay here was very pleasurable and we found the other guests friendly too. Would we return, yes we would.
