Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas is so close to Costa Rica's Pacific shore that waves are the soundtrack that lulls guests to sleep. Located on a secluded section of Langosta Beach, where the sunsets are vibrantly visible and the tide rolls in over volcanic rock, Cala Luna is centrally located to the surfing mecca of Tamarindo. But the natural beauty – and daily vinyasa yoga classes in an open-air studio – makes the resort itself a place to connect with Mother Earth.

End the morning's sun salutations with a guided meditation while listening to the chatter of a nightingale thrush in the trees. Walk through an indigenous forest filled with wildlife to the beach and explore tidal pools filled with fish and crabs. Take an afternoon snorkel cruise, keeping an eye out for dolphins and breaching whales. Return for happy hour on the beach before a personalized dinner under the stars.

This was one of the top 2 hotel / vacation experiences we have had. Everyone was so very friendly and helpful which was very appreciated being a foreigner in Costa Rico. I highly recommend this Hotel. It was close to the beach, the pool was large enough to swim laps in and although too far from town to walk on the dusty roads, a cab ride was only $5.

We visited Cala Luna 2-3 years ago and had a blast. Always wanted to come back and did it again in NOV 2017. The charm is the same. They even gave us the same room: 314! Spending time on the cabanas around the pool is always nice as well as eating at their rest. Prices are bit high but good service. French toast for breakfast were my favorite. The best part? The sunset cocktail on the beach. It's a 2-min walk to the beach and the bartender gives all guests free cocktails as we all enjoy the sunset. Beach is not ideal to swim. Strong currents and beach is rocky, but when the tide is low you can find natural pools to enjoy. Will definitely come back for a third time!

First time in Costa Rica and after one day we were ready to plan next years visit. Everyone at Cala Luna was friendly, happy and helpful. Felt welcomed the minute we arrived. Breakfast included is a huge bonus and it was delicious. We stayed in a two bedroom villa with a pool. Loved everything about this place.

We stayed in a three bedroom villa with family and had a wonderful time. This is a small hotel with beautiful grounds and a quaint walkway to a lovely beach. We all enjoyed the privacy that the villas afforded their guest. We rented a car so getting around was no problem for us but the hotel is a bit out of town, you will have to get a cab or bike there in order to enjoy the shops and restaurants in Tamarindo. ( bikes are available at the hotel ) The check in was wonderful, we really felt welcomed and well cared for and being a return guests we were given champagne in our villa and a welcoming note from the manager. ( nice touch ) Their breakfast buffet is very good, how they are able to bake such delicate pastries in this kind of humidity is beyond me. We really like Costa Rica and have stayed in over 7 hotels during our various stays and this continues to be a favorite.

Cala Luna has two disadvantages. One is not actually being on the beach--compensated for by setting up a bar each night on the beach to watch the fabulous sunsets with free rum drinks. The other is that it is surrounded by dirt roads that make walking into town a highly overrated, possibly dangerous activity. Drive or take a cheap taxi. But the property itself is fantastic. The staff was outstanding--greeting each new guest with a refreshment and cold washcloth, and remaining attentive throughout your stay. Heavy tropical vegetation provides great privacy, even in the common areas and especially at the villas where you have your own pool. The breakfast buffet was great, and wildlife entertaining. Easily one of the most beautiful hotel and romantic properties I've ever stayed at. The hardest part of our week long trip to Costa Rica was forcing ourselves to leave the hotel each day and go to the beach or elsewhere.
