Reviews for Cala Luna Boutique Hotel

Our 1 year Anniversary trip.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

The staff and resort was amazing. Jeffrey one of our waiters was a absolute pleasure to visit with. The staff was very friendly and accommodating for all our needs. Jose our tour guide was fun and helped us find all different species to make our experience one to remember. I can't wait to come back to visit Cala Luna again.

We Had Our Wedding at Cala Luna and It Was Amazing!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We had our wedding at Cala Luna and it couldn't have been more perfect!! Our wedding party was small (12 people including ourselves), but this made it intimate enough to have the full ceremony and reception on the beach. Which made for beautiful photos and an experience our guests said they would never forget 😊 Cala Luna's wedding planner Silvia was very attentive in helping our dream wedding become a reality. She worked with local vendors, photographers, hair and makeup artists, and florists to ensure every minor detail was taken care of on the wedding day. She even sourced the most delicious vegan chocolate wedding cake I've ever tasted!! I'm allergic to dairy so this wasn't an easy feat! The rest of Cala Luna's staff were incredibly thoughtful and attentive throughout our stay 3-night stay. Most of the staff knew our names and congratulated us on getting married before ever meeting them, which shows how much management cares to make you feel special during your stay. Charlie and Walt were especially great, taking the time to hold meaningful conversations with all of our guests and anticipating anything we needed before asking during our rehearsal dinner, wedding reception, and open bar. Those guys are just good people and care. Which goes a long way in today's time. Overall, everything was exactly how we envisioned it and more for our wedding day experience. Thank you SO MUCH, Cala Luna, for everything and we couldn't be happier with our experience 😊 Looking forward to returning for our anniversary in the future ❤️

Lovely hotel. Early rainy season means fewer tourists and better service!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I would highly recommend staying at Cala Luna during early rainy season (mid-May). The area was quiet compared to high/dry season, meaning we did not have to compete for services/attention in Cala Luna, Langosta, or Tamarindo (many of the negative reviews seem to stem from visiting a tourist area during a very busy time). We stayed in a 3-bedroom villa (4 adults and one 5-year-old) and had a very positive experience. Tips to help set your expectations at Cala Luna: Service - Embrace Pura Vida. Slower pace means slower service, response time, etc. Build that expectation into your own planning. - Follow up with reception on important things. Staff are very friendly and attentive, but sometimes stuff gets missed or their website/tablet gives incorrect information. If you have an important need (e.g., airport transportation), double-check the day before that their records match yours. - A different type of service - but WiFi had limited range in our villa (basically just in the living room), so don’t expect to scroll endlessly in your room. Food and Drink - Fill up at the breakfast buffet! It was a great spread (don’t forget the pancakes, omelets, and huevos rancheros direct from the kitchen). - Explore Tamarindo and Playa Langosta for other food. The hotel lunches and dinners are nice but also pricey. - The complimentary sunset cocktails were rarely actually served at the beach, but the drinks were delicious and you can always walk to the beach yourself from the hotel bar! Environment - Expect wildlife, as you’re surrounded by greenery and water, and all rooms! Ants, beetles, geckos, and land crabs may make an appearance in your room - all harmless, but sometimes surprising. Birds wake up early and howler monkeys tell you when it’s going to rain. Bats are active at night by the hotel pool. Mosquitos are present, especially in the morning (consider bringing your own DEET-free bug repellent; Cala Luna only provides citronella-scented lotion). We also saw iguanas and raccoons. - Expect off-property construction. Tamarindo is constantly being developed - so there are lots of active construction sites. On very hot days, the crews are likely to start earlier in the morning. - Despite it being rainy season, most of the rain occurred for max an hour in the late afternoon or overnight, so it was easy to adapt our plans. Activities - Free yoga and functional (strength/cardio) classes are outdoors, so you will sweat a lot! - Try to book tours/activities directly with companies, which are often more specialized and/or more reasonable than those offered by the hotel. We chose Shaman Tours (incredible for a rainforest daytrip) and Salt (amazing for beginner surf lessons). - The free bikes are limited, in okay shape, but they don’t have hand brakes (peddle backwards to stop) and no helmets are available. We were fine due to low season, but I can imagine being a little nervous on busy streets. - Do not expect good snorkeling - the waves churn up a lot of sand, so visibility is very limited. But Cala Luna backs onto Playa Langosta (follow the sign for “beach”, down the stairs from the pool), which has cool volcanic rock tide pools at low tide!

Nice family beach stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We enjoyed this hotel and our stay. Eddy carried our luggage and parked our car for us. Our room was nice, we had a secluded 2 queen room. We did walk to town but did find it well worth the $6 for a ride (one way) to and from town. Even though we had a car, we did not want the hassle of parking in town. Breakfast is buffet style and you can order fried eggs, pancakes, or an omelet, complementary. Pool is nice, beach access is nice. We did not get in the water here other than wade due to the rocks.
