Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas is so close to Costa Rica's Pacific shore that waves are the soundtrack that lulls guests to sleep. Located on a secluded section of Langosta Beach, where the sunsets are vibrantly visible and the tide rolls in over volcanic rock, Cala Luna is centrally located to the surfing mecca of Tamarindo. But the natural beauty – and daily vinyasa yoga classes in an open-air studio – makes the resort itself a place to connect with Mother Earth.

End the morning's sun salutations with a guided meditation while listening to the chatter of a nightingale thrush in the trees. Walk through an indigenous forest filled with wildlife to the beach and explore tidal pools filled with fish and crabs. Take an afternoon snorkel cruise, keeping an eye out for dolphins and breaching whales. Return for happy hour on the beach before a personalized dinner under the stars.

We hated to leave the Cala Luna today. It is truly one of the best hotels we have stayed in (our daughters are snobs for Four Seasons and this exceeds any one of those we have seen/stayed in). From the welcoming scented washcloths to the friendly grounds cat, Cala, it was a great place to relax or use as a jumping point to other area activities (SNUBA, zip lining, rain forest tour, surfing lessons in Tamarindo). Or just grabbing a book and sitting by the ocean listening to the waves. True, they don't have a beach per se, but at low tide, you can walk all the way to Tamarindo. Otherwise, it is a 20 minute walk into town. Or a $5 cab ride. Or borrow their bikes (one speed, a bit rickety but useable). They were quite helpful at tours - when our previously planned zipline tour was cancelled, the front desk got on it and got us scheduled for one within 15 minutes! Breakfast buffet was fabulous, local fruit definitely fresh. Their restaurant served a wonderful dinner along with organic wines. The staff was super helpful and friendly, especially Fernanda, who always had a smile on her face. I was originally worried about howler monkeys waking us up, but that wasn't a problem, they were very interesting to watch when we spotted them. We had a one bedroom two queen which our family shared well. We were also worried about the weather, as before we left, we saw nothing but thunderstorms every day on It turned out to be short bursts of showers in the afternoon and clear mornings. One of our tour guides said coming in August (starting their slow season) is the best kept secret. We will be back to Tamarindo to stay at the Cala Luna, but sure hope the city fixes the road to it before then (it was the only downside - a bone jarring ride down the road to Langosta and then on one of the entrances to the hotel)

We were there last week for three nights and had a three-bedroom villa which was amazing. Had a private small swimming pool, nice warm water. Spacious, comfortable, clean and a great staff. Breakfast is included which was very good. The beach near the hotel was rocky but a short walk up the beach is better for swimming. Beautiful sunsets with a cocktail in hand. It was a lot of fun and made for a great trip.

We were there last week for three night. Had a three-bedroom villa which was amazing. Had a private small swimming pool, nice warm water. Spacious, comfortable, clean. Very nice staff. Breakfast is included, a bit small and not many options at the buffet but it was good. Not the best spot if you are looking to spend a lot of time at the beach; it is rocky and water was cloudy. Beautiful sunsets with a cocktail in hand. The last night we got to see about 10-14 monkeys around the trees close to our villa, it was a lot of fun. Good place to stay.

We are travelling a lot and this is the first time I give 5 points to a hotel without hesitation. It's simply a paradise. Nice and spacious property with a wonderful garden, rooms decorated with taste. The restaurant would deserve a Michelin star for more then fair prices end the stuff could not be nicer. A fruit plate and a bottle of champagne for my husband on his birthday! I would retourne anytime.

I never write reviews but considering the uniqueness and excellence of my stay at the Cala Luna it is definitely worth sharing how wonderful it is to spend time in this superbe and exotic environment. Staff is extremely devoted and welcoming, food is delicious and fresh. I hope to have the chance to go back soon.
