Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas is so close to Costa Rica's Pacific shore that waves are the soundtrack that lulls guests to sleep. Located on a secluded section of Langosta Beach, where the sunsets are vibrantly visible and the tide rolls in over volcanic rock, Cala Luna is centrally located to the surfing mecca of Tamarindo. But the natural beauty – and daily vinyasa yoga classes in an open-air studio – makes the resort itself a place to connect with Mother Earth.

End the morning's sun salutations with a guided meditation while listening to the chatter of a nightingale thrush in the trees. Walk through an indigenous forest filled with wildlife to the beach and explore tidal pools filled with fish and crabs. Take an afternoon snorkel cruise, keeping an eye out for dolphins and breaching whales. Return for happy hour on the beach before a personalized dinner under the stars.

We didn’t stay here, but we did go to the spa for 1.5 hour couples massage and it was glorious. I️ got the deep tissue, she got the Swedish. We both waddled out of there on cloud nine. Highly recommend - it is done outside in the forest, wonderful natural sounds and treatment.

Wonderful little hotel will all luxury and attention that you may need! Our family of 4 (two kids aged 11 and 6) was upgraded to a family villa with private pool- really worth it! People are very nice and make all efforts to keep guests happy- I would love to go back!! loved it!

We were there during Easter Week so the town was a total ZOO! However our stay was very nice. We enjoyed the fine restaurant, pool and a wonderful massage in the outdoor spa. The only negative is Playa Langosta which is not suitable for swimming. Our room was clean and efficient.

We really enjoyed Cala Luna! It had the right balance of laid back with friendly service and nice enough amenities. It’s owned by a couple of Belgian expats and has a good mix of North American and European guests of all ages. The European sensibilities show in a variety of ways. The Pros: Location is secluded but easy to get to. Good value. Excellent buffet breakfast and good lunch and dinner options at resort. Not beachfront but a quick 2 min walk to ocean. Nice pool. Friendly concierge. Very small feel (not for someone who wants a large resort feel/amenities). Ocean is extremely warm (I loved!!). There are howler monkeys, raccoons, cats and dogs roaming freely on the property. Sunsets are gorgeous and there are complimentary delicious drinks served on the beach daily. Things to know: there is no towel service at the pool or at the beach. (There are a couple tan towels in the room that I think you're supposed to use as beach/pool towels). There is no food or beverage service at the beach but there are chairs. The beach is rocky but if you’re willing to walk half a mile (and time it right so you don’t get stranded by the high tide) you can get to the beautiful tamarindo beach, north of the hotel beach. Rooms are smallish but bathrooms are big. The farm dinner (owned by the hotel owners) is lovely and worth the spend. There is no store at the hotel. Stop by the market on the way to the hotel and get water, sunscreen, balls and games (there are none at the hotel). If you plan to be active in the water, bring water shoes. Enjoy!

We took 2 lodges with pools. What a great decision. Our group of dad, mum, daughter in 1 lodge and son, daughter in law and granddaughters in the other worked perfectly. Good breakfast with choice of cooked or cereal and fruit and pastries was good. We avoided dinner at hotel with kids. It looked a bit formal. Drinks one evening were a bit like drinking on the moon - no atmosphere. We were only people there! Great beach with rustic facilities. Overall enjoyed lodges but boutique hotel needs further development.
