El Monte Sagrado in Taos, New Mexico

Taking a cue from the Native Americans, a culture that embraces tranquility and the gifts of nature, El Monte Sagrado offers an awakening experience that is both surreal and serene. With charming guest rooms, suites and spacious casitas, this Taos, New Mexico marvel is surrounded by mountainous beauty that further promotes a calming effect on those fortunate enough to find themselves here. The intimate chambers, with their hand-painted walls, local artists' creations, delightful kiva fireplaces, tandem soaking tubs, and private courtyards or patios, are considered to be mini capsules of luxury where the world fades away once the door latches behind you. Quaint, charming, and just a couple of blocks from Taos Plaza, this resort is a part of the Lifestyle collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.

This adobe-style sanctuary is home to the delightful De la Tierra dining destination, whose menu displays cuisine with global and indigenous influences coupled with a setting illuminated by the soft glow of candles. The Gardens offers both a casual menu and setting, while Anaconda Bar features live entertainment, a mix of refreshing cocktails, and a socially vibrant ambiance centered around an amazing 1100-gallon saltwater aquarium. The hotel's Living Spa should rise to the top of anyone's list when yearning for a much-needed massage or body treatment. Taos is often thought of as an enclave for artists, which it most certainly is, but there is more to the story as well. Fly fishing, llama trekking, and skiing at the nearby Taos Ski Valley are among the many recreational activities, but culinary lessons, wine tasting and pottery classes should not be overlooked either. A closer look and you will discover that El Monte Sagrado strikes the perfect balance between a luxurious getaway and a culturally rich retreat.

Clearly very up market, but the decor will not appeal to all, Lots of animal horns , cow skin clad wardrobe doors and a swimming pool surrounded by tropical plants , is circular, 10 feet deep but not suitable for swimming. I got the impression that the place is trying too hard to be unusual that it's full of bizarre stuff, The service is excellent, staff very pleasant and efficient, valet parking and courtesy ride into town. Room a good size, comfy bed, great shower and well fitted. I found the open plan bathroom a little bizarre - but fine if you are into that sort of thing... And the previously mentioned cow skin wardrobe doors and bulls head peering at you from the wall above the fireplace. Strange... Breakfast on Sunday is a brunch, very well cooked and superb food but way too much, such a shame as do many guest were leaving food. It's certainly different!!

El Monte Sagrado has a lot of potential. After staying there I can see why some give this a 5 star and some give this a 1-2 star review. First the good, the valet staff was first rate. Every experience we had with them was pleasant. The grounds are very nice; there is a really beautiful main courtyard with all the casitas surrounding it-several ponds and nice water features. The spa looks nice but we did not have the opportunity to experience it. We stayed in a one of the “Mountain View” rooms. The rooms are nice—not sure about the Mountain View. From what I heard the Casitas are smaller—but they are right off of the central grounds so there is a tradeoff there. The restaurant—the menu is very limited on options and the service was very slow even though there were only 2 other tables there. Our server was very nice. The negatives: if there is an issue, the staff is not really trained on how to respond. For us, we experienced a number of issues and while we were onsite only one person seemed to actually care that we were having such an unhappy stay. This is an issue that I see in other reviews. If the front office staff can get this improved then I think your experience will be much more positive than ours. The cleaning crew—very strange experience here. They are exceptionally loud and yell at each other in the hallway. I was trying to rest in the afternoon and I could hear everything that they were yelling to each other. Some training is needed here as well. In the end, the last person we talked to finally understood the issues we had and escalated them to management. I had originally given them a lessor review but after management called, I decided to rewrite my review as they worked to resolve some of our issues.

This is a one of a kind hotel that was originally privately owned and operated. It has since changed hands a few times and the new corporate owners are trying hard to find the right path forward. If you are looking for an oasis of comfort in the heart of touristy Taos that offers one of the most tranquil settings to be found in the high sierra mountains of New Mexico then do yourself a favor and check into El Monte. There are a few minor details keeping El Monte from being a true 5 star experience, but the overall vision and details executed by the original owner are spectacular and warrant several night stay to full appreciate. This was our third visit to El Monte and we are already looking forward to our next visit at this extraordinary hotel.

From the moment the valet greets you with a smile you know you are in a place of calmness and relaxation. The rooms are unique - one with a spacious walk in shower or another with a deep soaking tub. The menu could use some diversity but the veg chile rellenos and the charcuterie plate are absolutely delicious! El Monte is the best place to stay in Taos.

The El Monte is a lovely hotel in Taos. The location is beautiful and close to Old Town Taos. The grounds are gorgeous and very well kept. The room was a nice size for 2 people and the beds were comfortable. The staff was very accommodating and helpful with many suggestions of what to do. They have a lovely spa if that is something you enjoy. I do feel the resort fee of $25.00 a night is a total rip off but until we all stop going to hotels that have them as a protest they will be added on. I really don't feel they offer anything to warrant a resort fee. It's already a pricey hotel.
