I Don’t Get All The One-Star Reviews

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

I will freely admit that after reading all the very negative recent reviews about The Castle Hotel, I was more than a bit apprehensive about our upcoming stay there. But since we had made a discounted reservation that was non-refundable, off we went – and were very pleasantly surprised by what we found. On the whole, our experience at The Castle was quite enjoyable, and we would definitely return. The positives: The Castle is an impressive building that would not look out of place in the English countryside; one could almost imagine running into Lord Grantham. Its architecture is stunning and the grounds well maintained and beautifully landscaped. The premier double queen room we had on the third floor in the newer wing was huge (350-400 square feet), clean, nicely furnished, and with very comfortable beds. The continental breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of offerings. We would also like to commend David, the front desk manager with whom we mostly dealt, for his welcoming attitude and his help with a couple of minor issues. We were also fortunate enough to get a private tour of the ornate rooms in the original castle building where events are held, and they were one of a kind. Needs improvement: A couple of areas where improvements are needed caught our eye. The company contracted to manage the hotel seriously understaffs front desk operations, as it often appeared that there was only one employee to run the whole show – two calls I made to the hotel were never answered, and upon check-in no one was at the front desk. Second, the parking situation can be chaotic, especially when special events are being held, with parking spaces all over the grounds and many marked for valet parking only. Finally, bills need to be simplified, since I found it impossible to accurately figure out in advance the exact cost of the room itself, taxes, and amenity fee – although to my pleasant surprise the final bill was significantly less than what I had calculated (and much less than what I had paid two years earlier at one of the nearby chain hotels).. So, in sum, I would rate The Castle as a four-star hotel, one that needs some fine-tuning in its operation but also one that is definitely very good value for an amazing experience and for its Old World ambience.

Don't Bother

Stayed one night, and we had more inconveniences in a less than 24 hour stay than in many, many years of traveling. Just read all the recent reiews, I won't go into details of our stay - all the other reviews have said it already. My concerns were not answered in an email, and when I called and spoke to HR, the response seemed resolved to the fact that the place is a dump and very badly managed.

A big disappointment. The exterior was beautiful, the service and condition of the room were sub-par.

We arrived late to the impressive building. We stayed in room 202, a deluxe queen. The carpet was dirty and the bedding looked used. I needed a tissue there were none in the room. The next day we put the Service Please on our door to return to the same uncleaned room. There was trash behind the dresser that was never cleaned. Too many negatives. No hair conditioner or body lotion, a dried blood stain on a robe. Do NOT stay here. The exterior of the building was very authentically a castle and we expected, if not royal treatment, a much better class of service than was delivered. Very disappointing. Manager was supposed to call to discuss the issues and that obviously didn’t happen.

Only Jack Nicholson was missing….STAY AWAY!

We spent a few nights in this place a number of years ago. It was interesting and kind of charming. Great property. Our last visit was unreal….the place was almost empty, with 2 very nice boys working as everything….I was seriously concerned that I will see REDRUM written on the door. No room service, rooms are not very clean, towels are yellow, carpets are filthy. There was a big storm and all the windows were leaking. Supposedly the property was sold to a new owner recently and they will perhaps do an uplift? But seriously, they should close the place down. It’s a total trap because the pictures are from 10 years ago and you get stuck in hell.

Horrible Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

While the hotel is gorgeous (it is a castle), the hallways were littered with garbage, outside doors were left unlocked so anyone can come & go and the sidewalks were sheets of ice. My room was either roasting hot or freezing. I have never experienced worse customer service in all my years. The hotel & corporation that runs it lack any level of responsiveness or care. I wouldn't stay here again for free.
