Reviews for Tarrytown House Estate on the Hudson

It was a dark and stormy night at Tarrytown House Estate

Tarrytown House Estate provided us with a pleasant and most unusual experience. First, the pleasant: the hotel is in a beautiful part of Tarrytown, high on a hillside. It was easily accessed and parking is ample. They provide at least two spaces for electric car charging. We didn't have our electric car with us, so I can't comment on their performance, the fact that they are there means a lot to me. The common spaces are clean, comfortable, and very welcoming. Our room was not high on the price scale, but it was spacious, well-appointed, and spotless. Everything we needed was there. Now for the unusual part: we arrived in Tarrytown during an exceptional wind and rain event. As we approached the hotel, it appeared quite closed. However, upon entering the lobby, we were greeted by an atmosphere of candlelight and a deep chill. The gentleman at the desk told us that a multitude of downed trees had taken out the electricity. Of course, he didn't know when the situation would improve, so he immediately set about finding us alternate accommodations. That having been done, he contacted a friend who was a taxi driver to get us there. While waiting, he threw open the freezer door and said that we could have as much ice cream and perishable drinks as we wanted. Fortunately, we had booked two nights, so we were able to return to enjoy a much more normal stay.

Lots of charm and whimsy

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I was very nervous after seeing all the negative reviews. I was so pleasantly surprised. The Estates are old. Upon arrival, there are workers everywhere sprucing the place up. The hotel was full for the weekend with events, our check-in was seamless. Our room is nice and clean, updated. The the hotels around here are much more expensive but this play has a lot of charm and whimsy. We will be back!

Bait & Switch

I had a confirmed reservation in the King House. Pictures showed a very classy room - hardwood floors, four-poster bed, fireplace, interesting architecture, etc. When I got to my room, it was a below average, totally typical hotel room. I went back to the front desk and they said I couldn't stay at the King House (I'm still not exactly sure why) and they gave me a free breakfast coupon to "make it up to me". That's it, not even an I'm sorry or an acknowledgment that I was, to my mind, massively downgraded. I felt scammed. When I went to breakfast, it was raining out the the roof was actively leaking right behind me. The whole place just seemed like it was lacking in basic upkeep. For example, I noticed a fountain that had trash floating in it my entire stay, so I wasn't as enchanted by the grounds as I'd hoped to be. So if you don't like your room, the restaurant, or the grounds, that's a problem.

Good but urgent upgrade needed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Good hotel but urgently needs an update in many areas. So much potential with some positives such as the lobby area, outside areas and fantastic restaurant - but many common areas and getting very old. Overall would stay here again but don’t expect luxury as it won’t be until they spend serious money renovating other parts of the hotel.
