Outstanding

Had an amazing stay at this beautiful hotel, the room was outstanding and will be sure to come back again, I was met at the reception by a lovely girl named Hollie who made this experience even better. Such a great hotel, right in the heart of Taunton

Great hotel, central location

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

This is a great hotel right in the middle of town. We stayed for 3 nights in a cold April and had a good time. The room is large, and there is enough storage for a few days stay. There is an iron, ironing board and hair dryer, and kettle with tea and coffee (and milk). The bed is very comfortable, and the pillows are especially good, not the foam-filled ones you often find. There are plenty of power sockets, and drinking water is provided. The room was nicely serviced each day. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower, and the decor is fresh and the sanitary ware works well (although the sink has separate hot and cold faucets). The water pressure could be better, but it is not enough of a gripe to mark down the rating. The towels are unusually soft and fluffy for a hotel! It would be nice if body lotion was provided. Breakfast is served in Brazz and is excellent. There is a buffet with hot and cold items, and a menu with a good selection of cooked breakfasts, including veggie. The restaurant is also good for dinner (see my separate review). There is an NCP car park next to the hotel (we paid using the app), with 4 22kW EV chargers, and there are some gardens that we did not look at because the weather was not good. Overall, a great place to stay in Taunton.

Not good - tepid HOT water room smelt

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Not good - tepid HOT water and shower didnt work - smelly room. I love the fact that its historic and realise that is why there is no double glazing. The 'antique' bathroom fittings would have been nice if the taps had turned so you got more than a dribble of water & if the shower had worked. This not working meant we had to have a bath but no HOT water - just tepid - not good. The the plug chain came off the plug - with no glasses near how the get the plug out ??? Oh dear. (we had been up at 5am hence too tired to do anything but manage and get into bed!) Then into the cold room which was because we had had to open the window to get rid of the smell. A small but adequate room but 4 sachets of thin UHT milk for 2 of us - certainly no nespresso or such machine - just a kettle, 4 sachets coffee, 4 tea bags. I found the bed small but comfortable. There was a noisy skateboader outside early in the evening n the echoing public courtyard so if you want a quiet room make sure you ask for it. It was not too noisy for us. Great fun watchign the pigeons eating the wisteria flower buds - it was just starting to come out when we arrived. Breakfast room decor grim but staff lovely and I found the food very good - for our taste. Pity about demanding my credit card twice and a ghastly room - I wont be back !

A truly beautiful hotel

My hubby & I stayed at the hotel for our anniversary recently and all I can say is what a wonderful and beautiful building…the staff also make this place just perfect. We were greeted by a lovely hand written anniversary card ( a lovely personal touch ) along with a beautiful, fresh and comfy room! We dined in the brazz restaurant for our dinner and it was delicious and fairly priced, with cocktails flowing and beautiful tasteful food we had a lovely evening and can’t thank Molly enough for her lovely hospitality. We have never been here before but certainly will be returning it was great, the atmosphere was lush. Overall such a nice getaway and we certainly will be returning here, all the staff were commendable and really hard working and the building well, that certainly speaks for it self!

A Beautiful Hotel - An Appalling Restaurant - Some Poor Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I had long wanted to stay at the Castle Hotel; when I left, I wondered why,for it had been a disappointing stay. In a nutshell, this is a splendidly interesting and comfortable hotel, in an historic building, let down by an appalling restaurant and uneven staff service. - the hand of a caring, consummate manager was sadly lacking. On arrival, there was an attempt to charge me more than £50 more than the price on the hotel website. What irked me, was not the mistake but the insistence that I was mistaken. In the end, the matter was sorted - a poor start. My room was large and elegant and clean, but no one seemed to have checked it. The extra and needed electric radiator was a good idea, but it was positioned where it could not be plugged in. The Nespresso machine machine was not plugged in. The water in the carafe was warm. I was permitted only two coffee capsules for my stay- Premier Inn leaves six. There must once have been an elegant dining room, with quiet attentive staff and a sense of luxury befitting the hotel. Now there is a cold and cheaply furnished cafe. It would not have surprised me to step outside and find myself outside a Wimpy Bar in 1970s Nuneaton. Service has dropped to two unsmiling waitresses who seem more interested in the music inflicted on the diners than the food. The tables are bare, the menus dog-eared, the cutlery cheap, the floor sticky, the banquettes torn and patched. And the food was so lazy and fridge based. a) The terrine was served so very cold that I would have had to wait 30 minutes for any flavour. And had no one tested how dry the combination was? b) The pork shoulder was excellently cooked but served in an utterly unattractive way - as though moulds and pipings had replaced care and thought. And why more apple-sauce than mashed potato? c) The trifle was a disaster. There was no richness or depth, and the one lump of rhubarb had zero flavour - another fridge mistiming And all this not for a bearable £25, but for £35! Breakfast was a dismal occasion. No staff appeared for the first five minutes. The offering was meagre- far less choice than at a Premier Inn. No grapefruit; no cheese; no cooked meat. Cheap processed bread. The cooked breakfast - done to order, was not. My bacon was so leathery that it could have been waiting since the previous morning. The sausages were cheap and tasteless. I will stay again, as I loved my room and the building and the central location, but, next time, a) I will ask for my room to be warmed b) I will eat anywhere but in the restaurant c) I will hope that a manager has looked again at customer service. ( for instance... presently... Guest: Good evening; I have booked a room. Receptionist: please fill in this form possible improvement... Guest: Good evening.; I have booked a room. Receptionist: Good evening Mr X. Welcome to the Castle Hotel;. I'll get someone to take your bags up to your room while we register you.) All in all, no wonder I seemed to be a very rare guest. Very, very sad.

Castle at Taunton: Good food, excellent service and a large garden suite all set in a comfortable castle in the centre of town. Highly recommended.
