We stayed three nights at Thatch Caye, a resort on its own, private little caye off the coast of Belize. It includes all meals and most drinks. The place has a family-like, intimate, festive, but laid-back and relaxing character. Because of this, and because it is its own tiny island, reached by its own boat from the mainland, and it is small, it almost has the feel of a tiny, intimate cruise ship. Guests see each other and the same employees throughout the stay and develop a relaxed familiarity with each other. It has nice swimming at the beach and nice views, pleasant weather, and they offer excursions such as snorkeling on the barrier reef nearby. The accommodations are nice (we had an over-the-water bungalow), food and the drinks are great. The over-water bungalows are not the kind where one would just jump into the water to swim from the bungalow, because they are on the windward side and do not have good swimming at them, so be aware of that. Otherwise, they are nice. We drove a rental car to Dangriga on the mainland, where we parked our car at thoe Pelican Beach resort, which is where the Thatch Caye boat docks to take people to and from the caye. All of that we arranged with the resort.

My wife and I cannot stop talking about how much we LOVED our stay at Thatcht Caye. Beautiful and well maintained island with great facilities and wonderful staff with so much to do but no pressure to enjoy at your own speed. We came here on our honeymoon, and immediately fell in love with our island dogs, Marley and Pico! The manager, Luis, came to greet us with watermelon juice and local coconut rum, and it was off to the races. We stayed 7 days and fell in love over and over with island life, the incredible kitchen, the super fun happy hours and generally getting to hang with the funny and easy to talk to bartenders and staff. The breakfast always had fresh eggs and fresh juice, and every meal had so much flavor! Best things we ate were lobsters we caught on an excursion! We also had conch and snapper - really fun! Because there are so many sister resorts around, there were so many options and excursions with the best quality of those outings taken into consideration. We did a zip line and cave tubing that was so fun and we didn’t have to fight with the crowds. The drinks are so good. Junior and Anivar knew how to make tropical drinks and a decent shaken iced coffee as well. My review and pictures don’t do it justice, but you can choose your adventure every day, and everyone is just so happy to be on the island. I’ve stayed at other resorts, but it almost felt like I was staying with my cousins towards to the end. The familiarity and care into every interaction should not be understated. Luis even came out on morning on the way to the beach and said in all seriousness, “what you’re not going to stop in and say hello?” We’ve already made plans to come back and can’t wait to and you should book a long weekend or longer here and you’ll want to come back.

I cannot say enough good things about Thatche Caye, their amazing team and the incredible experience that was our vacation. They do a wonderful job preserving and showcasing the natural beauty of the island. We were greeted at the dock by Luis and his team with fresh juice and blankets (it was a little cloudy that day but still gorgeous). From that moment on we felt like part of the family. Every single team member greeted us with a genuine smile and more often than not by name! The room was absolutely perfect. Clean with an extremely comfortable bed. I watched the stars every single night and the sunrises from the palapa on our roof. The food is AMAZING. The mocktails were spot on! Breakfast, lunch and dinner were culinary masterpieces of local cuisine. If they have the carrot cake when you’re there - GET IT. And the stewed chicken. I did two scuba dive trips with their Dive Center and HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend them! They were fantastic and made sure every single diver was safe and comfortable. They checked my certifications, verified my last dive and were excellent to dive with. We saw tons of marine life including nurse sharks and a turtle. The snorkeling trips- both day and Night snorkeling were fantastic. Darvin, Rafi, Joe, Mauricia (I spelled that wrong -sorry!) were excellent guides and boat crew. And let me tell you about Pico and Marley the island dogs who stole our hearts! They bring the whole experience to a different level. So friendly and sweet. Long story made longer - GO TO THATCHE CAYE. I am already planning to go back.
