Aqua Wellness Resort in Tola, Nicaragua

The tree houses at Aqua Wellness Resort serve two purposes. The first, obviously, is to inspire plenty of “I can’t believe we’re doing this!” exclamations, which you’ll catch yourself uttering as you sip champagne in an aerial plunge pool as the sun sinks into Redondo Bay. The other reason for tree living is environmental: By building above the forest floor, Aqua is minimizing its impact on a delicate ecosystem. Get up close and personal with nature – after all, it’s in your living room – and let the yoga classes, organic spa treatments, and healing hillside location work their magic.

Make friends with the neighboring families of howler monkeys who will be your complimentary alarm clock. Watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee as the creatures catch up on the night’s gossip. Spot a bright red tree frog dodge the gaze of a woodpecker. Walk along the shores of a private cove and keep an eye out for tracks from nesting sea turtles. Paddle through mangrove forests. Feast on Nicaraguan churrasco with a glass of fresh-squeezed tamarind, dragon fruit and watermelon juice.

My daughter and I loved our tree house and the monkeys who acted as an alarm clock every morning about 5, although the first morning, it was quite a surprise and we weren't sure what we were hearing. Regarding the tree house with its one full bath, slightly inconvenient for the person sleeping on futon on first floor. Would have been helpful to have at least a half bath on first floor. The beach was very nice and most of what we had to eat in the restaurant was quite good. Although, we had a kitchen, we only used it for coffee and the refrigerator for wine and toaster oven to reheat pizza. We had no intention of cooking. Be prepared to eat all your meals at Aqua because to go elsewhere and there is nowhere close by is a taxi ride. In fact, I can't think of one town enroute to Aqua (Rivas or Tola) come to mind that I would care to visit or to dine there. We enjoyed yoga classes and both had a massage while staying there. My massage by the manager of the massage study was truly excellent. Otherwise, other than outings you can book, be prepared to relax, read and sit on beach while you are there.

We loved our 3 night stay at this hotel despite the fact that we had a lot of rain. Our main villa on the beach was excellent with a beautiful master bedroom on top and a living/kitchen with sleeper couch below. The sleeper couch can be used by a small kid but consists of two serrate pads that separate so are not very good for sleeping. the main room bed was super comfortable and with a great view. The sounds of the waves is loud if you are close to the beach. Service and food at the restaurant were truly excellent with quite a few vegetarian options. We very much enjoyed the cocktails as well. We found prices to be reasonable. A few things to note - We did see some ants in our room but with the lights out they didn't stay long. The beach is beautiful and swim-able but has some rocky bits. The rooms size, locations, etc varies a great deal and our second villa was nice, but much smaller with no plunge pool. Some offer a lot of privacy and others not so much. It would make sense to ask for specifics, including a resort map with villa locations so you pick the one best suited to your needs. I highly recommend a visit but best do it fast as the new road (paved nearly all the way now) is bringing in development and you will see a lot of changes over the next few years. A linked villa development is already well under way next door.

We knew we wanted to visit Nicaragua and stay on the Pacific side and after reading lots of reviews, we selected the Aqua Wellness Resort! Disclaimer: we did use credit card points to book and got the one of the nicest rooms they had! We got a treehouse with a plunge pool just steps from the beach and it was paradise! We were in the Verado LS treehouse and very close to the restaurant. Our suite was 2 stories with the kitchen and sitting area downstairs and the bedroom (with a small balcony!) and bathroom were upstairs. The maid service provided us with a pitcher of water for brushing our teeth each night (they provide drinking water in the room too-you're told not to drink the water!)! We slept so well every night. The king size bed (and the pillows!!!!) were so comfortable. Our tree house had so much room to make ourselves at home during our stay! We had wifi in our room, at the restaurant, and at the front office! It was great if we wanted to be connected! We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner and everything we ate was amazing! We had read some reviews about the food being so-so, but not sure if those people ate the same food we did! Seriously-just absolutely amazing! We never left the resort and only took advantage of a couple's massage which was perfect! We got a cocoa nib exfoliating rub before the massage and post massage, we went to the restaurant where they gave us an exotic fruit plate and exotic fruit drinks that were included with the massage price. Just amazing! We relaxed by our pool for the majority of our four day stay and just read, talked, and enjoying the scenery. We had a view of the beach from the pool and every night we fell asleep to the sound of the waves crashing! Howler monkeys made their presence known and there were several birds around us as well! We took advantage of the roundtrip transportation the hotel can provide ($270 total-2.5 hours each way) and we paid an extra $20 for a stop at the grocery store on our way in. We got a 12 pack of Nicaraguan beer and some chips and cookies our driver recommended (he even came inside with us and helped us!) and glad we did! We had a full size fridge in our room and being able to just go grab a beer when we wanted was great! We had an 8 am flight to Costa Rica and the driver (Santiago!) he was great!) came and got us super early to get us there in time! I would make sure you look at your final bill before you leave. We officially "checked out" the night before since our flight the next day was so early. They accidentally charged us twice for our $220 couples massage and another (very small) charge - human error and it happens, so just double check things! All service we encountered here was just amazing! From the servers to the front office staff (who even printed a form we needed to fill out for our stay in Costa Rica), to the driver, the spa staff, and everyone else we encountered. Go to Nicaragua - you won't be disappointed!

Overall a lovely hotel but it could be better and is overpriced. We paid for a 'ocean view' and our view was of the forest - should have just paid for a forest view room and saved the money. Staff were nice on the whole but some not overly friendly and made you feel like it was a chore to serve you. Also they completely monopolise you with the price of taxis - we paid $60 with a local taxi to get from the airport and found out the hotel charge $260 return!! Also a taxi to the nearest town (a 2.5km drive) is $15 each way! Room service was a very disappointing experience - they brought the food along in polystyrene boxes which you would expect from a chip shop takeaway, forgot one of the forks and charged us $10 extra for the pleasure... Cutting through a steak with sauce on the polystyrene did not bode well.. I appreciate that the hotel is vast so delivering it may be difficult, but I dont think putting it on a tray isn't too much to ask / a warning that they can only bring it on polystyrene plates might have been good. Although the beach was nice there are lots of rocks which makes getting into the water / swimming difficult, most of the photos don't show this issue. Some of the rooms have very steep approaches which get super slippy when wet and don't have anywhere near enough lighting at night. Very loud howler monkeys which obviously cant be helped but worth knowing if youre a light sleeper.

Place was great if u want a quite place to . Just relax its a great place ive stayed many times its great. The bad is that there is no afternoon activities so it can get boring, and food is not the greatest especially for the price.
