Aqua Wellness Resort in Tola, Nicaragua

The tree houses at Aqua Wellness Resort serve two purposes. The first, obviously, is to inspire plenty of “I can’t believe we’re doing this!” exclamations, which you’ll catch yourself uttering as you sip champagne in an aerial plunge pool as the sun sinks into Redondo Bay. The other reason for tree living is environmental: By building above the forest floor, Aqua is minimizing its impact on a delicate ecosystem. Get up close and personal with nature – after all, it’s in your living room – and let the yoga classes, organic spa treatments, and healing hillside location work their magic.

Make friends with the neighboring families of howler monkeys who will be your complimentary alarm clock. Watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee as the creatures catch up on the night’s gossip. Spot a bright red tree frog dodge the gaze of a woodpecker. Walk along the shores of a private cove and keep an eye out for tracks from nesting sea turtles. Paddle through mangrove forests. Feast on Nicaraguan churrasco with a glass of fresh-squeezed tamarind, dragon fruit and watermelon juice.

Our family and I stayed in this property during the month of February, and we had an amazing time. Everything from the room, the service, the beach etc was great. Perfect place to just unwind, relax and immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of this country. For full details about our stay and pictures check my review on zeebalife dotcom

This was our last stop in our honeymoon. And what a place to conclude the honeymoon! Despite its very luxurious feel, they maintain it very simple, and a feel of an ecoLodge. Rooms are unbelievable, and the views are fantastic. It is especially fun if you have a small Infinity attached pool. The water or just wonderful and I have never experienced such a wonderful sunset: you just chill in your pool, and you have sweeping views of the whole Bay below you. The tree house rooms are quiet, beautifully made in the highest Western standards. The service there is exceptional. You get all of this and more: this does not feel at all as a busy “sandals” like Resort. It is very quiet, and they focus on keeping the place connected to the nature. You see millions of birds monkeys and even raccoons. in the evening, they maintain the place with very low light, to allow the nature to happen. If you don't mind paying very expensive prices for food and drinks, go ahead and do so. But our alternative was to stay in the resort, and go to the wonderful little Gigante nearby Village that has many cheap and delicious options to eat and drink; especially fish, as this is a fisherman Village if you can afford this, with a highly recommend coming here for a few days, as it is truly wonderful here. make sure that you pay the extra for a good see you, and also make sure that you have your own small pool, that really makes a difference

I husband and I did a tour of Nicaragua in March, and Aqua was our second stop. We found the resort very quiet. In fact, it couldn't have been half full. We had a very large 2-story house for any kitchen. It was beautiful. ((The resort had run a special in November offering half-price so we splurged for the larger accommodations. It was well worth it!)) I definitely recommend asking for accommodation close to the beach as some of the tree houses were quite a hike down to the water. This resort does a nice job of incorporating wellness, offering yoga included in your rate twice daily. Recreation and beach were lovely. Very natural and chill vibe. The staff was all very nice and helpful we never wanted for much… Other than maybe an attendant at the beach to bring drinks! Food was reasonably priced, and usually good. A few of the dishes seemed off as far as seasoning goes – one salad was littered with very salty sun-dried tomatoes which overpowered and almost ruined the dish, but as a whole they make a good attempt at fresh, well prepared food. We saw monkeys, raccoons, adorable baby skunks, lovely birds, beautiful flowers, and lush tropical foliage. Felt like a wonderful back drop for any vacation.

My wife and I spent the second half of our 10th wedding anniversary at Aqua. On balance, we were satisfied with the experience and hopefully would like to return. While there were many unique, remarkable highs of the experience including views, accommodations, friendly staff (mostly), the resort appears to be still working on providing top notch customer service one would expect from such a resort. Despite this, I still opted for a "very good" rating since I think work is being done to improve the service and it was a unique experience for a great value. My advice, set expectations, but seriously consider the resort since there are many worthwhile highlights. Details below. The Good/Great: - Eco Tree House Experience: The treehouses were gorgeous, beautifully constructed and had great views. Being nestled in the forest provided great views of howler monkeys and the surrounding natural beauty. The highlight of the experience. - Restaurant: I noticed a few reviews about the quality of food versus the cost. We were overall happy. I believe the menu has been upgraded over the last few months since a new manager took over. (Charlotte is a pleasure, professional and very friendly.) While the prices definitely aren't low, entrees were in high teens or low twenties, the portions are HUGE. Having a starter and entree for each person will be more than enough food. If you get a dessert, you will haven't eaten a lot of food. Great variety and many healthy options. The meal plan is a good option. - The staff: Overall, the more experienced members of the staff were friendly and eager to give you a good experience. Managers made appearances, which is an improvement based on what I read in other reviews. There were inconsistencies for sure. More to come... - The beach: It's small, but very nice, well manicured and definitely sufficient for the resort. Take advantage of the kayaks. - The overall value: My wife and I have lived in New York City, California and less expensive parts of the US. I've read that the resort charges NYC prices. While you can certainly get a room in NYC for these prices, the value is superior here. We stayed in a luxury suite. Two floors, a nice kitchen, a deck and plunge pool with ocean views we could not get for the cost in Cali or NYC. Off season, we could have gotten even better prices and if you get the meal plan, consider the treehouse studios. We barely used our kitchen. You are still benefiting from Nica being a hidden gem. Cons: - Customer Service: This is the largest opportunity area for the resort. While I believe they are working hard in this area and I did see improvements, there is still a ways to go. I found this forgivable (my wife felt less forgiving) since they did on a few occasions make it right by comping services and fixing errors. 1. The staff doesn't appear to communicate well. We made changes to plans which weren't noted and communicated. E.g. Change in spa appointment wasn't communicated to spa. Fortunately, they did stay late for us and comp the treatment. 2. Not all the restaurant staff understood the meal plans. We received conflicting information from different people. 3. Two staff members didn't provide good service. One waitress was short with us, had to be pushed to correct mistakes and didn't understand the meal plan. One member of the front desk giggled uncontrollably while I was on the phone with her and talking with her on two occasions at the front desk. Why? I don't know, but it felt as though I was the cause. Very odd. 4. We were picked up 45 minutes late after a tour to Ometepe. While we waited at the ferry stop, the security guard told my wife we shouldn't be there on our own past sun down. This was mentioned to Aqua, but nothing was done. -Construction: This occurred throughout our stay. It was heard from the beach. Not sure the solution since we'd prefer they maintain the resort, but none of the staff seemed to know how long it would continue. We were told, one day, an afternoon, none of which were accurate. Sounds of ocean, nature and quiet were interrupted.

Everything and everyone was absolutely wonderful at Aqua from reservations w Mabel and Victor, front desk staff, the airport round trip ride with Felix, drivers, housekeepers, restaurant chefs/servers, yoga instructors, beach attendant, to check out with Karla and Nora. I traveled solo as a nonSpanish speaking female, and was welcomed like I was family. Surfing with Emir, my surf guide, at Playa Amarillo was amazing! Amarillo was beautiful and peaceful, offering clean glassy waves with no crowd. Emir was extremely kind, patient, knowledgeable, kept me safe in the water, and had several excellent boards for me to choose from. It was fantastic to surf with an expert local surfer who has been surfing since age 5 years. I was also lucky to run into a photographer, Arkangel Zamora, on the beach who took fabulous surfing pics! In addition, I am so happy and grateful that I had a chance to visit the school in Playa Gigante through Pack for a Purpose. Many thanks to Karina, the teacher, and the children for warming my heart with their smiles and laughter! The children were so sweet, drew me pictures, and gave me the biggest hugs ever that will last me a lifetime of joy. I encourage everyone to please visit this school and bring supplies :) I cannot wait to return!!!
