Peter Island Resort & Spa in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

From the moment you arrive at the marina, a 20-minute boat ride from neighboring Tortola Island, it’s clear Peter Island Resort & Spa is no typical beach holiday. Guests have access to the entire 1,800-acre island, of which only 300 acres are developed. Hike through untouched forests or take to the sea with a chartered boat. Beachfront suites and spectacular hillside villas provide access to secluded stretches of sand that were once home to the Caribbean's most colorful characters, from Christopher Columbus to the pirate Blackbeard.

Take an early morning walk to White Bay Beach and lounge in a private tiki hut, no other creature in sight except for a passing gull. Eat a picnic in the shade. Unfurl the sails of a catamaran and explore the caves at Norman Island or the baths at Virgin Gorda. Watch the sun descend into the sea at Sunset Loop with a passion fruit mojito and a plate of fruit and cheese.

Having never been to the BVI, we stumbled upon Peter Island Resort during an Internet search. We had no idea what to expect. All we knew is that it is the only resort on the Island, it doesn't have TV (upon request, a small one was put in our room but it didn't have reception--- we didn't even need it) and it is quiet at night according to a family friend. None of that mattered and that was actually a plus! I will also say that in the last 12 months, we have been to the St. Regis in both Mexico and Florida, Banyan Tree in Acapulco (also amazing but different) and the Viceroy in Anguilla so we have pretty high expectations. This place is fabulous. The only negative, which really isn't a negative is that the rooms are just ok. They are very clean but they could use a little face lift. However, even though rooms are extremely important to me, I was perfectly comfortable and would stay in it, again. The resort is very intimate and is self-contained. It has three beaches and we loved the change of scene. The staff is terrific and each person that we came into contact with was so nice and very concerned about our comfort and happiness. We knew most of the guests, at least by sight, by the end of the week as well as the employees. Everyone was so pleasant and welcoming and we never had to ask for anything twice. The staff is on its game. All of the things that the resort does for its guests is really nice-- sunset gazing, private honeymoon beach, a reserved beach hut with a picnic lunch delivered to you, Managers reception, Caribbean buffet dinner with a Steel Drum band, ferry service to Tortola, etc. One night we went to Tortola for dinner to watch the sunset and the hotel arranged for a taxi for us on the other side to take us to dinner and back. The hotel also arranged for us to rent a boat with a captain for eight hours and we had a great day touring the surrounding islands. Alexis, one of the senior managers, is fabulous. She reminded me of Julie McCoy. She was there to great us when we arrived, throughout our stay and hugged us on our way out. We saw and spoke with Jason, the General Manager, several times as we passed him at dinner or walking on the premises. The women who work in Trade Winds Restaurant are also so nice as are the women who work at the front desk. Again, no one had to be asked for anything more than once. True professionals. Last but not least, Michael, Lewis and Rock who made sure that we were all set up on our beach ands sunset excursions. It felt like we were with a family staying as guests at their house. We can't wait to go back!

Eight of us were sailing in the BVI for a week on our yearly family vacation down to the Islands. We always include a stop at Peter Island Resort. Last week, for the first time, four of the group made appointments and went to the Spa. Even though these individuals have regular massages at home in Colorado, they could not stop raving about the spa treatments and about the expertise of the professionals who worked with them. A special call-out to Catherine, Mignolia, Asha, and Patricia for their outstanding skills! We will see them next year!!

This is an excellent resort, truly excellent, and while pricey worth the money. The ambience, service, and location are wonderful. They are well seasoned and dedicated to help guests enjoy a lovely relaxing vacation. I would go again for sure. We had some medical issues and the staff could not have been more helpful or responsive. Where could it have been better? The off shore snorkeling was fun but unexciting (regrettably were not able to take an excursion because of weather which is repotedly much more engaging). The service is good the food is good to very good but not excellent.

We stopped at Peter Island via a sailing yacht and picked up one of the only 4 mooring balls in the anchorage. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The beach was a short walk down the path where the Beach restaurant was located and was much more upscale than expected with great food and service. The Tradewinds was the nicer restaurant located by the pool which did offer a different menu from the beach restaurant. Although we can't speak for the room amenities as we stayed on the boat, we look forward to going back again and staying in the resort.

Returned to Peter Island Resort after 20 years and we are so glad we did. The staff here is truly special. Each and everyone of them wants to make sure you have a wonderful vacation. Special mention for Jean Kelly who was there at our last visit, Maxine, and Susan who all made all our dining experiences very enjoyable, they know your name on second day and remember what your individual tastes and needs are. We had a beach dinner for two on one night and Maxine made it wonderful despite a turn in the weather. Upon arrival I realized I had forgotten a hair brush and one of the staff Elisa I think bought one after she went home that night and returned with it for me the next day not expecting anything in return. Alexis was on top of everything making sure all of our needs were constantly meet. Scott the general manager was constantly around, knew all the guests by name and took a personal interest in everyone . He and his family are such an asset to the resort. We stayed in a beachfront junior suite as we had before and we were very happy with it. Did not use the spa as we could not fit that in but is was beautiful. Went to White Bay beach a couple of days and the setup there is wonderful with your own private cabana and also chairs in front of the cabana by the water, very private, quite and relaxing. The resort will pack your lunch for you and there are no extra charges for reserving a cabana. The beach in front of our room was never crowded and there was always an available hut and chairs. Food was very good, possibly could use a bit more variety for lunch but items on the menu were very good. I highly recommend this resort, it is a beautiful place but the staff make it an especially wonderful place. We have stayed at Caneel Bay, and Little Dix Bay which we enjoyed but picked Peter Island to return to and we are very happy we did.Thank you Peter Island for a fantastic vacation.
