Peter Island Resort & Spa in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

From the moment you arrive at the marina, a 20-minute boat ride from neighboring Tortola Island, it’s clear Peter Island Resort & Spa is no typical beach holiday. Guests have access to the entire 1,800-acre island, of which only 300 acres are developed. Hike through untouched forests or take to the sea with a chartered boat. Beachfront suites and spectacular hillside villas provide access to secluded stretches of sand that were once home to the Caribbean's most colorful characters, from Christopher Columbus to the pirate Blackbeard.

Take an early morning walk to White Bay Beach and lounge in a private tiki hut, no other creature in sight except for a passing gull. Eat a picnic in the shade. Unfurl the sails of a catamaran and explore the caves at Norman Island or the baths at Virgin Gorda. Watch the sun descend into the sea at Sunset Loop with a passion fruit mojito and a plate of fruit and cheese.

Not sure what else to say other than perfection. My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights as part one of our honeymoon. It had been raining the day we arrived and as soon as we got off of the boat, we were greeted with big umbrellas and a tropical drink. We were immediately taken to our room where our bags were delivered. From the flawless beaches, the 5-star dining to the exceptional service from everyone, including the bartenders and servers, this was the perfect start to our honeymoon. Whatever you need, reception is there to handle for you. They set up our day boat trips, our dining reservations, and our transportation to other islands perfectly. It felt like we were the only 2 on the island everyday. We were really sad to leave and already have plans to return someday soon.

If you ever watched the show Fantasy Island then you will know exactly the way this place feels! It was top notch and 5 star all the way! When you arrive on this private paradise (either helicopter or boat) you are greeted with Island cocktails and driven to your rooms. We stayed beachfront villa for two weeks and wish it was longer! Every morning these massive yachts pulled into the harbor yet even the wealthiest weren't allowed on the guest staying on the islands beach! The Island only has accommodations for 55 so it's ultra exclusive!:) The staff was friendly and were at our beck n call! I even became a vet to a local iguana who had gotten sick so they helped me make a trip to Tortola for a vet easy! There is no place on earth like this one! Save up because it's NOT inexpensive, however, worth every penny!:) This is a place where very few can say they have been! If you have the opportunity I'd recommend you do it!:) It's a trip I'll never forget and feel blessed to have gone!:) "Trips with Tiff"

If I were looking for a place to party until the wee hours I would not choose Peter Island. However, if you need a break from the stresses of the rat race, this is it... I was so relaxed 1 day in that I just slept at will 3-4 times a day... hammock, cabana, room, palapa.... kudos to GM Scott... you bring a very positive vibe to this place. Also shout out to Johan, Captain, and Rose, not to mention all the others who make this a very special place to unwind!!!!

Early May 2017 5 night Romantic getaway for us - we are both 52. This place exceeded our high expectations! Everything is smooth and easy, high end without being stuffy, and romantic and quiet in a good way. The arrival process is top notch and smooth, as two fantastic women (Alexa and Joselle) greeted us and looked after us throughout our stay. The resort only has 50 rooms, and while staff said it was 90 percent full, it felt empty in a good way. It felt like a private island! We opted to pay-as-you go for meals and while it is not cheap, they don't gouge you. We could eat whenever we wanted easily. There are two restaurants so it's a short shuttle to whichever is farther, but really it's easy unlike some other resorts. Beach - ridiculously good. Forget about waking up early to put towels on your beach chairs before they get taken -- this is Peter Island!!! There are hardly any other people on the beach so it's super easy to use the very high quality chairs under a little straw hut for shade. We took out a sea kayak and snorkel gear for the whole trip (no charge and easy). It was my birthday one of the days so my girlfriend arranged a secret day -- morning at White Bay beach in hut 3 (the best). The staff led by Alexa helped a lot -- it was awesome. They brought picnic lunch and champagne at midday. We were the only people (practically) on a big stretch of beach. Then we went to the spa for couples massage in a hilltop room with open air - amazing. Lastly dinner by the water's edge - fantastic. There was actually a charity event on the premises that night (500 per person) that guests were invited to for free so we got to party a little late at night -- usually it's quiet. This is a private quiet island. Around 10:00pm every night the wait staff politely asks if you want anything else then they all take the boat to Tortola where they live. Three staff stay over each night. besides them the hotel is entirely for guests and a few boaters--it makes it feel safe and special. We did the Thursday boat trip to the Baths in Virgin Gorda and a stop off Cooper Island. The Baths are an absolute must! I have travelled the world and it's one of my favorite places - so cool! Bring a waterproof bag for your iphone/camera for cool photos. Sunday we ventured out -- church in Tortola only 20 minute ferry ride then lunch at Scrub Island, afternoon cocktails at Pusser's in Marina Cay, and back to Tortola then Peter Island. The ferries seemed intimidating while we were planning, but it's actually very easy and clean and the Peter Island staff make it smooth. Our takeaway was that it was amazing. We have plenty of teenagers between us and honestly we didn't want a place with waterslides or xbox or teenagers running around. None. We also didn't want "beach olympics" or trivia contests or bingo. Go to Dominican Republic or Cancun for that stuff. This was a way better experience than a high end resort in Puerto Rico, Cancun, etc -- the private island makes it special. Lastly, we flew from NJ to San Juan for a 24 hour visit so we arrived a little early at Peter Island -- that's a great way to enjoy the full day and the staff let us use the spa facilities to change, etc. We stayed in a basic ocean view first floor villa near the marina. I can't imagine a bad room anywhere. Fantastic!!!

We stayed for a week and there were some fabulous experiences and some less so. The welcome was excellent and as it was late, a light meal ( sandwich and salad) had been placed in the room. Everybody was friendly but not always as efficient as we could have hoped. We had much better meals ( and cheaper) on Tortola mainland- accessed by the excellent ferry service. In general, the service levels were more like the Caribbean of 20 years ago- although always with a smile!
