Peter Island Resort & Spa in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

From the moment you arrive at the marina, a 20-minute boat ride from neighboring Tortola Island, it’s clear Peter Island Resort & Spa is no typical beach holiday. Guests have access to the entire 1,800-acre island, of which only 300 acres are developed. Hike through untouched forests or take to the sea with a chartered boat. Beachfront suites and spectacular hillside villas provide access to secluded stretches of sand that were once home to the Caribbean's most colorful characters, from Christopher Columbus to the pirate Blackbeard.

Take an early morning walk to White Bay Beach and lounge in a private tiki hut, no other creature in sight except for a passing gull. Eat a picnic in the shade. Unfurl the sails of a catamaran and explore the caves at Norman Island or the baths at Virgin Gorda. Watch the sun descend into the sea at Sunset Loop with a passion fruit mojito and a plate of fruit and cheese.

The resort is very relaxing and the island is beautiful. The views are amazing. We felt like we had the island almost all to ourselves. My husband and I slept better at Peter Island Resort than we do at home. The bed was very comfortable. We really loved our spa day and falling asleep in the hammocks.

Peter Island Resort is a wonderful place to relax. You can easily disconnect here. The beach front suites are very comfortable, the food is excellent and most of all the staff is fantastic, always looking to please you. We will return.

We are so surprised to find this resort often listed among all those amazing hotels in the Carribean. It is a 3* hotel in a 6* location. The two great things that we will remember are the amazingly beautiful Deadman's Beach, the "painkiller out of plastic canisters" at the beach bar and the well organized and fun sailing trip (boat: Lionhearted, company Aristocat) on Thursdays. Transfer: We came with the public ferry. The hotel wanted to send a boat to meet us when we get to CSY, at least this was my understanding. When we got there, we learnt that there is a ferry schedule. I did not find it on the website. After a long journey (NYC-STT, two cabs and two ferries) we spent some time at the dirty dock waiting for a dirty boat and then we got to the hotel and no food until 6:30pm. I am a positive person, but I kind of wanted to turn around there. We should have. However, our transfer was 104 USD per person,RT, the hotel charges much more, so better organize your own transfer. Rooms: Renovation is seriously needed. The mattress is average and the bathrooms are very moldy. Bring your own shampoo, conditioner, etc, the "offered" brand does not smell good and is of bad quality. Someone needs to clean the air conditioners. I fully understand that this is an island and it is difficult to get things there and that the salt water is aggressive, however, as a paying customer and the way this resort is marketed, it just did not meet my expectations of a luxury resort. Lastly, the minibar: We got two beers for free and the rest was filled every day except Good Friday. We don't expect free drinks, but it would just be nice to refill it all daily. There was no welcome "surprise".We only had flipflops in size 37 for women, probably the left overs from this season. On Easter Sunday, our room was not done by 5pm as they were busy with people arriving and departing. I understand, it is a holiday. Beach: Deadman's Beach is beautiful, the sun chairs are ok, the towels are all in horrible condition and the service is lame. Nobody is there before 9am or asking if towels are needed. Would it be too much to walk up and down and exchange towels or offer them to people arriving? I have never seen anybody from the main office here. Is there any supervision regarding the service? I don't want anybody to get fired, but someone needs to be in charge. All lovely people, but there is room for improvement on the pro-activeness. In general, people do not seem to be too friendly to tourists. At this whole resort nobody makes your stay special. People are not unfriendly, but there is no vibe, no atmosphere. At Whitebay Beach, we were supposed to be picked up at 3:15pm. At 4pm my husband called and when we were eventually picked up the excuse was "lots of traffic". Food: The food is ok for a Carribean Island and actually prices for drinks, food and wine are ok considering our remote location, but why are you forcing people to eat from the buffet twice a week? If you were an all inclusive hotel, I would not complain, but I don't want to be forced to spend 80USD for an average buffet, just because there is no other choice. Sometimes we waited for our our meals quite long. Things happen, but I do not think that you are aware of it. Complaints don't seem to be taken seriously. Please also buy a coffee machine, the coffee is terrible and I assure you, it is worse than at any hot dog stand in New York. Spa: I was looking forward to a spa treatment, visited it and why this 80s style place was rated world class is a miracle to me. I recommend a quick visit to Parrot Cay in the Turks&Caicos to see a top notch spa. They do a perfect job and the place is well maintained and truly beautiful. In essence, my husband and I had fun, the weather was great and we leave with lots of great memories, however, we could not recommend anybody to stay here. We would probably always suggest to sail here for a day and leave. The hotel did not meet our expectations in any category. I would not have posted here, but the hotel staff asked (several times) for our "positive" comments on trip advisor when we left, so here we go... In essence, Peter Island is up for renovation and has no (really no) vibe, no atmosphere and no outstanding service. Try other islands, if you are looking for a perfect beach vacation.

Wow- what an incredible place!! Some resorts have that magic that you can't put your finger on, Peter Island has this in abundance. We spent the first three days of our honeymoon on Peter Island and couldn't have wished for anything more. We arrived by helicopter and were met by the wonderful Michael, who took us to our room via a short tour of the island. Over the next couple of days we made full use of the facilities, from sailing the hobie wave on the beach to a couples massage at the spa. Everything was superb, and the staff were more than accommodating at every turn. There was a cocktail reception and Caribbean BBQ where we met Scott the manager. It was a pleasure to speak to him and discover more about the island. The steel pan band were excellent, and children were invited to go up and play with them throughout the night. We loved it so much that during our 5 night yacht charter on the next leg of our trip we came back and spent another night in the marina. Again we made full use of the facilities and sheltered from the wind and rain playing pool and drinking cocktails. If you are questioning your stay due to some strange reviews on here, don't. There absolutely no need to use a cell phone to ring for towels. We absolutely loved every second and will definitely be back. Abi and David.

Came in by boat, marina personnel were great, but that is where the good ended. Boater are indeed not treated very well. I got the impression that they didn't really want marina guests. No towels at the beach and the marina facilities were just average. The food at the restaurant was poor and we left most uneaten. I couldn't even get a second cup of coffee without going inside and asking on two occasions. Lots of better places to stay.
