Peter Island Resort & Spa in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

From the moment you arrive at the marina, a 20-minute boat ride from neighboring Tortola Island, it’s clear Peter Island Resort & Spa is no typical beach holiday. Guests have access to the entire 1,800-acre island, of which only 300 acres are developed. Hike through untouched forests or take to the sea with a chartered boat. Beachfront suites and spectacular hillside villas provide access to secluded stretches of sand that were once home to the Caribbean's most colorful characters, from Christopher Columbus to the pirate Blackbeard.

Take an early morning walk to White Bay Beach and lounge in a private tiki hut, no other creature in sight except for a passing gull. Eat a picnic in the shade. Unfurl the sails of a catamaran and explore the caves at Norman Island or the baths at Virgin Gorda. Watch the sun descend into the sea at Sunset Loop with a passion fruit mojito and a plate of fruit and cheese.

Early May 2017 5 night Romantic getaway for us - we are both 52. This place exceeded our high expectations! Everything is smooth and easy, high end without being stuffy, and romantic and quiet in a good way. The arrival process is top notch and smooth, as two fantastic women (Alexa and Joselle) greeted us and looked after us throughout our stay. The resort only has 50 rooms, and while staff said it was 90 percent full, it felt empty in a good way. It felt like a private island! We opted to pay-as-you go for meals and while it is not cheap, they don't gouge you. We could eat whenever we wanted easily. There are two restaurants so it's a short shuttle to whichever is farther, but really it's easy unlike some other resorts. Beach - ridiculously good. Forget about waking up early to put towels on your beach chairs before they get taken -- this is Peter Island!!! There are hardly any other people on the beach so it's super easy to use the very high quality chairs under a little straw hut for shade. We took out a sea kayak and snorkel gear for the whole trip (no charge and easy). It was my birthday one of the days so my girlfriend arranged a secret day -- morning at White Bay beach in hut 3 (the best). The staff led by Alexa helped a lot -- it was awesome. They brought picnic lunch and champagne at midday. We were the only people (practically) on a big stretch of beach. Then we went to the spa for couples massage in a hilltop room with open air - amazing. Lastly dinner by the water's edge - fantastic. There was actually a charity event on the premises that night (500 per person) that guests were invited to for free so we got to party a little late at night -- usually it's quiet. This is a private quiet island. Around 10:00pm every night the wait staff politely asks if you want anything else then they all take the boat to Tortola where they live. Three staff stay over each night. besides them the hotel is entirely for guests and a few boaters--it makes it feel safe and special. We did the Thursday boat trip to the Baths in Virgin Gorda and a stop off Cooper Island. The Baths are an absolute must! I have travelled the world and it's one of my favorite places - so cool! Bring a waterproof bag for your iphone/camera for cool photos. Sunday we ventured out -- church in Tortola only 20 minute ferry ride then lunch at Scrub Island, afternoon cocktails at Pusser's in Marina Cay, and back to Tortola then Peter Island. The ferries seemed intimidating while we were planning, but it's actually very easy and clean and the Peter Island staff make it smooth. Our takeaway was that it was amazing. We have plenty of teenagers between us and honestly we didn't want a place with waterslides or xbox or teenagers running around. None. We also didn't want "beach olympics" or trivia contests or bingo. Go to Dominican Republic or Cancun for that stuff. This was a way better experience than a high end resort in Puerto Rico, Cancun, etc -- the private island makes it special. Lastly, we flew from NJ to San Juan for a 24 hour visit so we arrived a little early at Peter Island -- that's a great way to enjoy the full day and the staff let us use the spa facilities to change, etc. We stayed in a basic ocean view first floor villa near the marina. I can't imagine a bad room anywhere. Fantastic!!!

We stayed for a week and there were some fabulous experiences and some less so. The welcome was excellent and as it was late, a light meal ( sandwich and salad) had been placed in the room. Everybody was friendly but not always as efficient as we could have hoped. We had much better meals ( and cheaper) on Tortola mainland- accessed by the excellent ferry service. In general, the service levels were more like the Caribbean of 20 years ago- although always with a smile!

My husband and I decided to extend our sailboat vacation and stay 2 nights at Peter Island Resort. What a huge mistake this was! The rooms are in dire need of a facelift and fine if you say you have plans to refurbish....but don't charge the ridiculous rates for a class C hotel which is what this has become. Our only choice for dinner the first night was the Saturday night buffet in the Tradewinds restaurant. The food was laid out in a brightly lit "conference type room"... a lot of the selections had run out and were not replenished and the food we did eat was mediocre at best. The big shocker was when we got the bill and saw that they charged us $99.00 a person for that????? We have never in our lives eaten at a buffet that was so scarcely stocked and charged that ridiculous charge until we came here. No excuse for this if you want to be touted as a class resort! It would not have been so bad if there were more choices for dining that night or at least the opportunity to order off the menu if one did not want the buffet. The other restaurant on the beach was also just average and we tried it 3 times...same menu ....once again ridiculous prices. We don't mind spending $44.00 for a piece of fish....but it better be something special...which ours was not. This resort has a long way to go to live up to its 4 or 5 star rating... for us~ we will spend our money elsewhere next time and have a much more enjoyable experience.

The amazing staff at this beautiful spot absolutely made our trip. Javid, Kechia, Donette are the best bartenders of our week long trip around the islands - many thanks to them for their excellent hospitality!

We had Ocean View accommodations, lower level, near the pool. This was our sixth visit. Obviously, we like it a lot. Plenty to do-water sports, hiking, biking, sailing on the Silmaril or just chillin. There is a large pool and at least two beautiful beaches. The staff is the best part. Several are veterans having been there as long as 30 years. There is also a spa which is outstanding. Two great restaurants you never have to leave the island.
