Peter Island Resort & Spa in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

From the moment you arrive at the marina, a 20-minute boat ride from neighboring Tortola Island, it’s clear Peter Island Resort & Spa is no typical beach holiday. Guests have access to the entire 1,800-acre island, of which only 300 acres are developed. Hike through untouched forests or take to the sea with a chartered boat. Beachfront suites and spectacular hillside villas provide access to secluded stretches of sand that were once home to the Caribbean's most colorful characters, from Christopher Columbus to the pirate Blackbeard.

Take an early morning walk to White Bay Beach and lounge in a private tiki hut, no other creature in sight except for a passing gull. Eat a picnic in the shade. Unfurl the sails of a catamaran and explore the caves at Norman Island or the baths at Virgin Gorda. Watch the sun descend into the sea at Sunset Loop with a passion fruit mojito and a plate of fruit and cheese.

This was our second trip to Peter Island, but the first trip with our children. We had a great time. The staff was very helpful, courteous, and friendly. The concierge staff helped us book a day sail on the Silmaril and a 1/2 day fishing charter. The staff was extremely helpful when we had to rearrange the fishing due to rough seas. I would say that this is a very family friendly resort; however, the resort is not a place where there is an active "kids club" or where the kids have a separate set of activities. I am certain that this could be arranged; however, the way things were set out was perfect for our family. Breakfast near the ocean (you have to try Mama Jean's French Toast - and get her to sign the recipe for you), then to the beach, then to lunch, the beach, nap time, dinner, and back for the night. The trip was very relaxing, and it was a great way to get away from work and other commitments. I think that my six year old daughter stated it the best when she asked if we could spend every Father's Day at Peter Island. It was a great vacation.

My husband and I booked Peter Island for our wedding. We spent 8 nights there and booked one of their wedding packages for the ceremony and dinner. First, for the resort itself and our stay: I would give the resort 5 stars. The quiet nature of the private island, the food, the friendly staff, and the rooms were wonderful. We had an ocean view room and, other than a few bugs (which are to be expected in a tropical climate), it was great. The two restaurants on site are both good. We are both vegan and they went above and beyond to make special accommodations for our diet at every meal. Menu prices are a little on the high side, but that’s no surprise at a resort of this caliber. The beaches were clean and quiet. The snorkeling at White Bay Beach was amazing. The staff was always friendly and courteous and made you feel right at home from the moment you stepped off the ferry. For the wedding: I would give the resort 2 stars. The wedding came together and everything went well, but there was definitely room for improvement: - Planning was difficult at best. The event coordinators rarely answered any emails and getting answers to questions was nearly impossible. I emailed repeatedly asking about different options or arrangements, but they rarely replied. I also tried getting in touch by phone, but the event manager’s voicemail box is full. At one point we considered cancelling, but everyone’s flights were already booked. We arrived at the island uncertain about some of the preparations and, frankly, worried about the state of our wedding. After our arrival, the event manager spent an hour or so with us giving us a tour of the island and going over all the details. At that point, after months of worry and frustration, I finally felt like everything was settled and I could relax a bit. - The afternoon of our wedding, there was maintenance being done to the hot water and I had to take a shower and prep for my wedding in cold water….not fun! - The hairstylist/makeup artist they booked (and I paid $400 for) was not my style at all, and my hair did not turn out anything like I wanted. I wanted simple, beachy waves (like the pictures I brought.) I got a teased-up do that was way more elaborate than any picture I brought with me. My makeup was extremely heavy, and I ended up wiping off as much as I could in the bathroom before I got dressed. - Our wedding package said it included (taken directly from the brochure I was sent): “private dinner on the beach for up to four people.” Once we got the bill, we found out that the “dinner” did not include food. We were fully prepared to pay for upgraded food options and additional people, but to find out that the “dinner” listed in our package didn’t include even a small allotment towards food was surprising. We would have liked to iron out more details and costs beforehand, but there was no time. The menu was only sent to us a week before we arrived, and my emails with questions about it were ignored. - We were told we would have our marriage certificate before we left the island. We didn’t. They mailed it to us over three weeks later via snail mail. When it finally arrived (over six weeks after the wedding), I was surprised to see there was no protective backing at all, and it was all bent up from the international journey. I contacted the event coordinator about the poor condition, but they never replied to my email. - The photographer they recommended was acceptable. There were some shots I was disappointed we didn’t get and a lack of attention to detail that could have made several shots much better. We also waited 11 weeks for our final, edited photos. Of course, this is all outside of Peter Island’s control, but I mention it because she was their recommended photographer. Overall, our wedding day went well and everyone had a good time…and that’s what’s important. The ceremony location and the dinner on a quiet part of the beach were truly amazing and something we’ll treasure forever. I’m sure there are moments that could have worked out better at any wedding but, honestly, if the planning process had not been so frustrating, I probably would have been more willing to overlook other issues that popped up. While I might consider Peter Island for a vacation again in the distant future, if I could go back in time, I’m not sure I’d choose them again for my wedding.

I have visited Peter Island twice before on day trips and have always wanted to stay there and finally got the chance! It was all I had hoped it would be! Myself and three of my girlfriends arrived on June 15th and had a great week! We had a few things go wrong the first couple of days but everything was corrected and we were treated like royalty for the remainder of our stay. The beach front junior suite was beautiful! It was great to just walk off our patio and hit the beach! Deadmans Beach is gorgeous! Watching the sun rise there every morning was breathtaking! While there, we visited the spa two different days and all received great services! The food is really good and the staff did a good job providing me with sugar free desserts. I really appreciated the chef speaking with me personally about my likes and dislikes and doing his best to accommodate my special diet. One thing I would definitely suggest is taking the sunset loop trip. The views are outstanding! This trip was definitely a trip of a lifetime that I definitely won't forget! I also want to mention several staff members that truly went out of their way to make our trip special: Susan, Jean, Alexis, Jenefer, and Raquelle. They were amazing! I love that this resort never feels crowded and all the staff members know you and know your preferences and always ask about your day. What an amazing vacation!

Had a one week vacation with my wife. This place was a little tough to get to from Canada. Flight with one stopover, then a 60 minute boat ride. But it was well worth it. the resort is private and the only one on the island. it is very spacious with walking paths, multiple beaches - including a beach you can reserve for private use. Rooms are very nice - staff are extremely helpful and the food is excellent. Lots of stuff to do in the area.

I boated to Peter Island 4 years ago and spent the day. Ever since, I dreamed of spending a week here with my girlfriends. After coming back every summer for a few hours, we finally booked a beachfront suite and made our way to this "5 star resort". Stepping off of the ferry and onto the dock felt like we had been transported into a fantasy world. Smiling staff members greeted us on the dock with fresh hand towels and delicious beverages. The service was downhill afterwards. As of right now, we are on day 4 of a 7 day vacation and I feel compelled to go ahead a write a review. I can't imagine that I will ever return as a guest here. Although there are many good features here at PI (I will mention those, too, to be fair), the quality of service and attention to detail expected for the price, leaves a lot to be desired. Here we go: 1. One person in our party doesn't eat sugar and the resort was notified well In advance of our arrival at least two times. When we arrived, we were told the chef would meet with us that night to discuss. Our first night at dinner, there was no dessert for her and No chef to discuss. We were told there was a private event at the other restaurant and he was too busy. The chef on duty came out and apologized. 2. The service that night was very slow and the staff was inattentive. We ate our whole meal With no refills on beverages and without anyone checking on us. Also, the steak was ordered medium and was well done. 3. The hairdryer in my room caught on fire and smoked up the room. 4. While at the spa, we set our robes and personal items on the table on the patio when it started raining at the pool. We went to the restroom and came out and the robes were gone. The locker keys were in the pocket of the robes. Also a shirt was missing. We asked the attendant and she said she had to clean up because they were always doing tours and people would write negative reviews. She said she didn't see a shirt, yet when she found the robes, the shirt was inside of it. Also, we took the only four chairs at the pool that didn't have dirty towels and robes on them. No other guests were there. 5. We were told our fridge would be restocked every day. Since we are non-drinkers, they said they would keep 8 Diet Coke in there for the four of us. They put them in the first night and never restocked. On the fourth day (the same day I'm writing this review) we ran out and I called for more. It took three phone calls and me getting pretty upset that we finally got four diet cokes 5 hours later. 6. The two sinks in our bathroom have no cold water. Weird, huh? Try brushing your teeth with hot water. 7. The bed broke the third night and Maintenance had to come and repair. Tonight, the screw is still on the floor and no one has come to "permanently" repair. 8. Beach hut ran out of towels. 9. Fourth night at dinner - they were out of two entrees and the only dessert we were interested in was also out. We waited over an hour and half to get our dinner and again one of the steaks was way over cooked. I finally had to go and complain to the supervisor. The food was fair. The bill for four people $350.00. We actually felt like prisoners as we waited. There was nowhere else on the island to get anything to eat! That was our only choice. 10. Getting any extra supplies for the room is almost impossible. Like I said, there are some things we enjoy (beautiful beaches, breakfast, spa services, and some staff), but those should go without mentioning at this price. If I checked into this hotel and received this service anywhere in the states, I would get in my car and leave immediately. Kudos to Jennefer in customer relations for trying to please her guests. But she can only do so much. She should get a huge promotion!!
