The Oberoi, Mauritius in Turtle Bay, Mauritius

Isolated from the world, a serene gem in the Indian Ocean, the verdant island of Mauritius invites you to escape and unwind in the lap of luxury at The Oberoi Mauritius. Along 600 meters of crystalline oceanfront, with a blend of European, African and Asian style, guest villas at this exquisite hotel are a perfect fusion of beach bungalow and stylish modernity. Comfortable and plush, each room has a breezy tropical atmosphere, with sunken baths overlooking open-air gardens, and an abundance of warm light. Breathe in the fresh air as you recline in your gazebo, or splash in your private pool, all the while enjoying the incredible surroundings. As you gaze out over the ocean from underneath your thatched roof, take in the sweeping mountains in the distance, and sink into the blissful ambiance of The Oberoi Mauritius.

Walk right down to the beach and dive into the warm island waters, or go windsurfing, water skiing and sailing under the magnificent tropical sun. Visit the village of Chamarel on the southwestern side of the island and see the Seven Colored Earth" - a place where volcanic sediment cooled at different temperatures creates a stunning rainbow of colored rock and sand. Be sure to take in Chamarel Falls, dropping 100 meters from the Saint Denis River into a lush gorge. Hike over 60 kilometers of forest trails in Black River Gorges National Park, and be amazed by the fascinating rare birds and plant life. Climb high into the mountains of Savanne, 1800 feet above sea level, and visit the temple of Lord Shiva at the sacred Ganga Talao Lake. Enjoy a fantastic day of canyonning around seven different waterfalls, and adventure out by rappelling through the falls, diving into clear pools, and sliding down natural rock formations. For a day of leisure, golf at numerous courses around the island, relax on a yacht cruise along the shores, or pamper yourself at The Oberoi Spa. As the sun sets over the island, sit down at The Restaurant and dine on continental, Oriental and Creole cuisine, then enjoy a perfectly mixed cocktail at the bar as the stars shine over The Oberoi Mauritius.

It's difficult to find fault with this extraordinary place and, though beauty comes rather easily to this hotel - sandwiched as it is between turquoise water, pristine white beaches and immaculately manicured tropical gardens - its heavenly location is NOT the show-stopper. The exceptional staff, and the incredible attention to detail that is shown in every aspect of their service, make the Oberoi in Mauritius genuinely world class. The food in even the very finest hotels can sometimes disappoint, but not here, due in part to the tireless and charming Head Chef, Igor Bocchia, and his wonderful brigade. New Year's Eve in particular, which can so often be misjudged, was jaw-dropping both in its ambition and execution, and was generous to a fault. Room service too is fabulous, offering huge choice of food and drink, served with enormous panache and always prompt: nothing was ever too much trouble. Spa treatments were equally expert and spoiling, and the range of facilities offered is diverse (and too plentiful to exhaust, even during a ten day stay). Suffice to say, if the opportunity were to arise one day, we would return in great haste! It really is one in a million.

Short version: Wonderful stay with very friendly and professional staff from the gardeners to the GM, who welcomed me in person upon arrival. There is a very positive and relaxed vibe among the resort with its lavish perfectly maintained gardens. Pros: - High end service with a lot of professionalism and very friendly staff - High level of privacy - Beautiful accommodations - TV with Netflix and iPod station - Great spa and nice pools - Wonderful food with a passionate chef - Many interesting activities are included (Henrio who teaches breathing techniques, tai chi and yoga did a fantastic job by having a real interest in the customers that they can balance them in a very positive way) - Great location only 15min away from Grand Baie or Port Louis Cons: - None Potential suggestions: - Gym could have more modern cardio machines with integrated TV's (not really a big downside though) - The sheets could be even a touch softer/smoother - There could be a TV integrated in the bathroom to watch movies from the bathtub (but this could obviously distract from the beautiful garden view so not an absolute must) - The life music at the bar could even be a bit more vivid and less conservative sometimes (but it matches the experience of having pure relaxation how it is) - The sand at the beaches could be even a bit finer So these are only potential suggestions and no strong suggestions as some could even risk to distract from the unique experience with the natural surroundings. On the grounds there are many birds, geckos, etc. which is fantastic. When I talked to another guest who stayed there alone for another week after having stayed there for two weeks with his wife and kids he mentioned that they tried out in other years also other hotels on Mauritius such as the Royal Palms, the Prince Maurice and the Four Seasons and they are keep coming back to the Oberoi. For him the Oberoi is cleary the best due to the overall experience, the service, the gorgeous gardens, the stunning sunsets and the amazing food. So my research seemed to have payed off as I considered the mentioned alternatives as well before booking at the Oberoi which was clearly the right choice! Full review: Due to the weather forecast predicting mainly rain for early Jan I was worried about my 6 night stay at the Oberoi. But everything turned out to be fantastic. The north west of the island is blessed with better weather conditions and therefore there was often blue sky after short rain showers and a very warm relaxing clima. The lush sub-tropical gardens are maintained to perfection and the natural beauty wih all the different plants and birds makes you feel relaxed immediately. There are lavish grounds of about 20 acres with more than 600m beach access for only 70 accomodations which offers a very high level of privacy even for the the lowest room categories, the luxury pavillons. I liked that the nature, tranquillity, high end service and quality were in the spotlight and no distracting bling bling. It's just a very refined resort for the discerning travellers. I booked a luxury pavillon and had room number 320 which was ideally located only a few meters from the beach and swimming pool at the on the rocks restaurant. The other pool for adults was also not far away and it was super close to the gym, spa, bicycle station and the tennis courts. To the main restaurant and to the bar it was a nice stroll either through the gardens or along the beach. The room was about 70 square meters with an outdoor terrace equipped with two sun loungers and a table with two chairs. The room was nicely appointed offering a generous marble bath room with a lot of natural light, a great shower with strong water pressure and a sunken bath tub with a nice garden view, a walk in closet and a big bedroom with high ceilings where the bed and sitting area was located. There were complimentary nespresso tabs and tea facilities and a flat screen tv with netflix (only used it once as the natural surrounding is the real cinema there). I liked the terrace with sea view and the privacy as no people were walking in front of the terrace. The food in two of three restaurants I've tried was outstanding. There was an Italian chef with high ambitions who asked guests regularly about their satisfaction and he was very flexible regarding special wishes. I had lobster, sea bass, sashimi, beef, truffles, pasta, etc. Really top notch! He is very passionate to deliver highest quality with a stunning service which is a strong asset of the Oberoi compared with other hotels on the island where rather boring buffets are offered. Everything is a la carte and cooked to the point. Even for breakfast it's a la carte with interesting gourmet choices and only a small buffet with basics such as bread, croissants, fruits, yoghurts, juices, ham, sweets, etc. You could also order breakfast to your room with no extra charge. At the spa there was a steam room and I had the Oberoi signature massage and a facial treatment and both was excellent and a real treat! The spa is really worth a visit! Many activities were included such as snorkeling, water ski, biking, etc. Diving or swimming with dolphins costs extra. There was also wine tasting, rum tasting, paintings, stare glazing, evening walks, garden tours, cooking lessons, etc. But what really stood out for me of the whole stay were the activities I booked with Henrio to learn more about breathing techniques and tai chi. Henrio is a very professional and wise instructor with positive vibes truly understanding the nature, energy flows and how all interacts with each other. He helped me to become more self aware and aware of our surroundings, the nature, the energy flow and how all is connected. After one week at the resort I really felt like newborn and completely balanced and relaxed. So I'm really very thankful for his time, patience and ability to describe things in so logical and fascinating ways while maintaining a humble and very respectful view for our natural surroundings. He just seems to be so relaxed and balanced that you become this too being around with him. All in all a very memorable stay! Highly recommended!

This hotel is exceptional in many areas. Firstly the food is the best we’ve eaten on the island and probably the best hotel food outside of a few Michelin rated restaurants . Everything is Ala Carte which is a welcome change from the sumptuous but soulless buffets of Mauritius . The Dosa , Alloo Paratha and unique omelettes at breakfast are world class. The dinner in the Gunpowder room accommodates 12 people maximum . The feast that follows is either Indian or Japanese of the highest quality . Service is impeccable and the wines are very well selected from SA, France and Australia . Dinner in the main restaurant or On the Rocks is equally impressive . Seafood is fresh and expertly prepared. The resort itself is magnificent with the gardens deserving of a special mention . The two pools are superb and the adults only one is a treat if you want no noise around you . Service at the beach could improve a little but overall the pool and sea are wonderfully relaxing . Rooms are quite excellent with sunken marble baths , spacious showers and excellent amenities and facilities . Netflix is a nice touch . This is a superb hotel designed for people who want to relax and be pampered . If it’s a disco resort you are looking for then stay away . For the discerning guest this is all one could ask for !

This was our 4th visit to Mauritius but our 1st stay at the oberoi. The staff are uber friendly, the guys at on the rocks were great and greeted us daily by our names. The ground are beautifully maintained, we left after 8 days to visit reunion island and the hotel kept our bags for 4 nights safely until we returned. The only semi negative thing I can say is that the lunch time menu On the Rocks wasn't the best, I don't go away to eat toasties pizza and burgers but that is my preference and I am sure they are trying to cater for everyone' s taste. All in all a great stay. I would look to staying at the oberoi again.
