About the Hotel

Surrounded by 24 acres of parkland embracing a fragrant herb garden, pine wood meadow and 19th-century walled vegetable garden, Chateau de Massillan is a Provençal treasure. The property dates back to 1550, when it was owned by Diane de Poitiers, the famed lover of Henry II, and its superb location in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône wine region makes it an ideal holiday destination. With its lush landscapes, fascinating Roman archaeological excavations, exceptional hiking trails, and rich palette of centuries-old vineyards, this area is the lifeblood that links Provence and Languedoc.

Beautiful property, room needed a refresh

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 months ago

We stayed here as part of a Backroads cycling trip through Provence. The property is beautiful but our room itself was a bit dated, tired and very small. We did, however, have a fabulous dinner here! One of our favorite meals in Provence.

Essence of tranquility where service needs improvement

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 months ago

Writing this review, I have a mixed feelings. Let's start with good things: The place is beautifull and is literally an essence of tranquility. We had a modern room with a view to a parc and it was so awesome! Taking a sunbed and sit under the trees with a bottle of wine, it was so amazing. The food is simply marvelous. We had a dinner in 2-star Michelin restaurant in Vienne two days before we came to Massillan and here, it was the same level or maybe even better. All those details you can enjoy. We just loved it. As in typical good French restaurant, a wine list is excellent. Room was very nice comfortable, we especially appreciated good and quite air conditioning. The castle courtyard and pool are simply beautifull. So why this stay was not perfect ? Because of some more and some less important details ... The first problem, the most visible is a service. It was on a good level in the restaurant, otherwise there is a space for improvement. We requested different pillow, it was said "Yes, we will check", noone ever came back. We reported problems with wi-fi, it was said "Yes, we will check", noone ever came back, problem persisted. That awesome food I wrote about earlier is actually also the biggest weakness. Why ? Because restaurant offers two menus only! Btw, noone will tell you that. We have decided to stay for six nights. So we had two options for five evening. Although the food is delicious, you do not want to eat all the time the same things and all the modification we saw were just not to a standard of a normal menu. To make things even worse, all lunches and two evenings you have only bistro so again and again, you repeat the same food. I do not understand why, the chef is obviously more than competent to create more than two different menus. There were more things like no body lotion in room or bumpy access road with holes noone cares to fix. When we were at the pool, we requested in bar next to the pool two drinks, we were told by the waiter that he is "not authorized to work with alcohol" ... Like seriously ? I wish so much I could give a 5-star review to Massillan because we just love tranquility of this place all that charm that it offers. But I can't. Although we had a great experience, there are definetly things that require attention. Still, we can strongly recommend the place, just for a shorter visits.

Unfriendly, unwelcome, understaffed overpriced hotel where no one cares and everything is extra and service is non existent..imagine being told on arrival check in is 4pm and we should go east until that time ! .. if this is what you like from a hotel stay then I highly recommend!

Disappointing

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 10 months ago

Very beautiful place, excellent restaurant but the welcome at the reception was very poor. Some employees don’t know what is a customer centric approach and how to welcome people. Room very expensive without hair conditioner, the ecological approach is a pretext for economy
