Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail, Colorado

Check your plane ticket: Sonnenalp Hotel is located just outside of Vail Village, but the décor may make you think you landed in Germany instead. The four-generations-old ski lodge excels at creating a cozy, comfortable environment for guests returning from a day on the slopes (the lodge enjoys exclusive access to the ski concierge at Gondola 1) – rooms are decked out in old-school plaid, with custom-made Bavarian furniture, gas log fireplaces, and heated marble floors. Biomat can be added to a range of massage treatments to soothe sore muscles with far infrared heat and prepare the body for the next day's fresh powder.

Fuel up for the day with a full breakfast from Ludwig's buffet – Eggs Florentine, Landjaeger sausage, muesli and fresh fruit, with a handful of trail mix to go. Suit up for a day in the Rockies. Soar down Vail's famous back bowls and revel in the Alpine air. Return to the lodge to unwind by the fire, sipping on hot cocoa spiked with Bailey’s. Soak away the evening in the spa's whirlpool overlooking Gore Creek.

I went this pass weekend to get out of Los Angeles. The Sonnenalp hotel went above and beyond with everything. I don't remember the last time I had such a relaxing weekend. The bed was so comfortable I never wanted to get out of it. Thank you again for such a great weekend and can't wait to come back.

I came to Vail for a weekend of rest and relaxation and the Sonnenalp was the perfect place for that! Despite my early arrival, my room was ready and waiting for me. It was spacious, clean, bright and had a lovely little balcony. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was huge and the tub was so inviting! I lit the fire and spent a couple of hours relaxing with room service, winding down from my journey. During my weekend, I ate in all of the outlets and there were definitely a few standouts. The chicken tortilla soup was a meal by itself and was better than the version I tried at the neighboring Four Seasons. The breakfast was included in my rate and was incredibly extensive and the fondue at the Swiss Chalet restaurant was decadent and so authentic! I also had a spa treatment and got chatting to a number of people in the hot tub areas. There were a lot of locals that come for spa days or for weekends to treat themselves and all agreed that the spa was so unique, friendly and not intimidating at all, as so many can be. It was busy as the mountain wasn't open until the following weekend, but the staff were warm and patient as they got around to everyones requests. The indoor/outdoor pool was fabulous and another highlight! Overall, I couldn't recommend Sonnenalp more. It is welcoming, beautiful, charming and a real pleasure to stay at. I can't wait to come back!

Had a girls weekend to celebrate a few birthdays at the Sonnenalp this weekend and everything was perfect! The experience was fantastic from the moment we pulled in. The staff was great, the rooms are spacious, the spa was amazing! We will certainly be back!

My wife and I stayed two nights mid October after the Aspen leaves were spent but well before ski season began. This hotel's decor reminded us very much of a country inn we stayed at in St Moritz - white walls, tilt-out windows, fireplace. Very nice stay, very clean, comfy bed, huge bathroom. The "upstairs loft bedroom" design of our suite was unique and made it feel much larger than a typical hotel suite. We enjoyed using the outdoor hot tub and Spa fireplace but didn't book the Spa's services. Valet parking was easy. Hotel was conveniently located. Suite windows faced the mountain and interstate noise wasn't noticed even with the windows open. Staff was very pleasant. Would stay again!
