Bauer il Palazzo in Venice, Italy

The crown jewel in Bauer's collection of properties, Bauer il Palazzo is a grand neo-Gothic manor house that offers one of the most sumptuous ways to experience Venice. Under the direction of proprietress Francesca Bortolotto Possati, each of the rooms and suites is distinctive with period furniture, Murano glass chandeliers and walls of Bevilacqua and Rubelli fabric. The Bauer Palazzo is a five star hotel, but just barely. It has a great location, large rooms for the money and a professional, helpful staff. But it is dated with old, plain furnishings in poorly laid out rooms. Like it probably was 30-40 years ago. For example, no room key cards, actual keys. No safe with push-button combinations, but with actual keys (which you must then hide). Small TV's with poor reception. Our spacious room had a shower that wasn't much bigger than a phone booth. The breakfast buffet was sub-par, although sitting outside on the canal made up for it.

We had a lovely suite, very private and the amenities were excellent. Location was close to the square and right on the water. We were right in the middle of all the action. I would definitely go back to that hotel. Service was excellent.

Ok I wouldn’t say that ole blue eyes would approve of the Stevie Wonder and Sting selections, but jazz is all about interpretation and these pieces were well arranged for the keyboard, Jazz bass and drummer and quite excellent and lovely vocalist Rita Bincoletto so yes, we will call it Jazz. Great artists performing during the week, first door in left when you enter but stroll the Palazzo it is exquisite and view on the Canal beautiful. 9 euro cover plus a drink, good bar, fun crowd, great time. Sinatra musta loved it!!

5 star service and accommodations throughout the wonderfully situated hotel. From the front desk staff, the porters, breakfast staff, to the cleaning crew, all top notch, hard working with impeccable service. Amazing room with comforts and luxury fit for a king. Turn down service and bathroom products of amazing quality. Highly recommended.

We had a good stay at the Bauer Palazzo in September 2013, so I booked it again for our stay 26-30 September 2017. I used 275,000 Lufthansa Miles and $926 to get a Superior Room for four nights. I had a confirmed reservation at the Palazzo. When we arrived, I presented the paperwork and was informed that "We don't have a room for you at the Palazzo. You are in the Bauer." (The Bauer is connected to the Palazzo.) We were then literally frog marched to the Bauer, which caters to HUGE tour groups (Chinese, American, French,...), and were told by Jimmy at the Front Desk that "We have 25 categories of rooms. Yours is the cheapest." Really. Unbelievably rude. We were reminded several times that we had a cheap room. This was no way to treat people who paid the equivalent of $900/night and were returning guests. Very embarrassing to me, as it was my wife's birthday, and it made me feel cheap. The lobby and public spaces feel like they haven't been updated since the 60's. Very dated. Clean, but... Our room was on the fifth floor above a small canal where gondoliers were busy from 9AM to sunset. Singing, noisy, all day. Basically, it was men behaving badly. The room was modest and clean. Nothing exceptional. Somewhat in need of modernization. Our towels weren't replaced one day. The buffet breakfast service was crowded by pushy tour groups. The offerings were not particularly impressive. The scrambled eggs were always cold. I don't know how they managed that, even with a fresh tray. On two of the four days, it took 20 minutes to get a pot of coffee and tea. (That was also a problem at the Palazzo in '13, which has a rooftop dining area.) One day, we wanted to visit Murano. The Concierge pushed the hotel's private boat very hard. This takes you to a tourist glass blowing experience, with a likely kickback to the hotel, and we had a specific destination in mind. He then routed us across Venice to the north shore on a route that was a walk at least 50% longer than a more direct route. He wouldn't mention that we could take a vaporetto from San Marco. I asked the same Concierge to make a dinner reservation at Vino Vino specifically in the garden. When we arrived, the restaurant did not have the garden request but fortunately had one table (in the corner) left for us and was very apologetic about the mixup. So, the Concierge didn't listen and/or didn't care. So, we were very disappointed. We were looking forward to repeating our 2013 Palazzo experience, and we paid for it. What we got was disrespect and a tour group experience at a premium price. Never again.
