Ca' Sagredo Hotel in Venice, Italy

On the edge of the Grand Canal, five-star Ca' Sagredo Hotel holds the legacy of one of the most prominent noble families in Venice. The Sagredos bought the palace in the middle of the 17th Century and assembled an art collection of more than 800 paintings and 2,000 drawings dating from the Renaissance. Original art and antiques envelop guests during a stay that's more akin to time travel than a holiday. Upgrade to a suite for even plusher surroundings – the towering wardrobes in the Library Suite used to house Zaccaria Sagredo's literary collection.

Run your hands over the gold leafing on the edges of your royal bed as you wake up and stretch. Eschew the crowded museums in Venice and descend the hotel’s grand staircase instead. Get absorbed in masterpieces by NicolÚ Bambini, Giambattista Piepolo and Sebastiano Ricci. Listen to the faraway notes of a piano player in the salon. Dine on fresh row fish from the Rialto market while watching gondolas navigate the Grand Canal.

Ca Sagredo Stayed 2 nights at this hotel after a lot of research and opted for ca sagredo due to its location and decor but wished I'd booked hotel Danielle instead. I've stayed before in Venice at a beautiful 4 star and 75% less in price but wanted somewhere on the grand canal and special, for my mums big bday. Only good thing was the location. Hardly any staff visible and when they were around, reception and breakfast staff seem to think it was a 1 star self service hotel and not a 5 star. For instance, they wouldn't book restaurants for you or reconfirm my pick up to go on the orient express. Instead asked me to use my mobile or the phone in room (which was more expensive to use than my mobile!). But when reception staff gave us a restaurant recommendation - the food was awful. No doubt they got a referral fee for that! The following night I went to a place with good trip advisor ratings and it was amazing.... At breakfast when I asked for orange juice they pointed to a table where it was and carried on standing there doing nothing. Again not 5 star service. Breakfast had sparking wine (the only highlight) but no real selection of fresh hot food. You had to pay 10-15 euros for porridge or an omelette. Not much variety for so called 5 star, £300 pounds a night establishment! I was gluten free and struggled as staff at this hotel don't speak much English. All the guests were English speaking but it was like a ghost town. Never seemed like full occupancy. Our room was tired and needed updating like the grout and carpets. Nothing like the glamorous pictures on the Internet. A 3 star plus room at best (room 111). My parents had room 110 which was better. We should have asked for another room. One morning we rang and asked for a spoon so I could mix my medication with water and reception did not know what this was and then after 10 minutes called backed and asked us to call breakfast to get a spoon! 5 star service, really???? Other examples of bad service: when we first arrived in our room we were not given and proper rooming info like the location of the safe etc. Also we were not told where or when breakfast was. When we then asked we were given minimal directions and spent 10 minutes getting lost. Typical of the minimal service/ poor attitude of the staff. Guests were always an imposition to them. There was also no complimentary bottled water in our room or fruit. Again a 5 star hotel and no bottles of complimentary water? How would we know if the tap water in the bathroom was safe to drink? In Spain you can't drink the tap water and in Venice with all the flooding and sewage issues...? No proper turn down either (but I'm thinking about leading hotels standards here). They knew we were celebrating 2 special occasions and there wasn't any special effort made. Clearly they are not interested in returning customers. In sum, bitterly disappointing after much thought and research when into booking this Venetian hotel.

Was excited going to Ca' Sagredo and it didn't disappoint. It's an old world hotel in a great location. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable . We had a large room with all the amenities needed while traveling in Venice. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to this city. Our airline lost our luggage (which seems to be the norm in Italy) and they were very helpful making sure that we finally got it back.

Our stay at the Ca' Sagredo Hotel was very pleasant. The location is wonderful. Inspite of being close to most shops and restaurants, it is still very quiet. We saw some wonderful paintings in the interior hallways and rooms, the breakfast was fresh and substantial. There was even a juicer where we could make our own juice from a fresh fruit selection. The staff were courteous and helpful. I would like to mention Domiziana from the reception who helped us a lot as it was my husband's and my first visit to Venice and we were a bit lost about finding the right tours etc.

Been here twice - once travelling on my own for 4 days sightseeing in Venice then absolutely had to take my husband to see! Right on The Grand Canal with a fabulous terrace to sit, drink wine and watch the world go by! Breakfast very good - the Maitre d knew me after the first morning and came straight over with the most fabulous cappuccino The room was amazing both times ( different rooms ) right on the corner with views right over the canal I had dinner there both visits - very friendly, efficient staff and gorgeous food Sat on the roof terrace in the evening and drank wine - who could ask for more?! I could go on and on it was truly fabulous both visits and I would love to return

A very special hotel, right on the Grand Canal. The canal view rooms are REALLY expensive but we had a standard room which had its own private terrace looking out over the roof tops of Venice and it was charming. The breakfast room was just off the beautiful hall overlookng the canal, and adjacent to the breakfast room was another fantastic room which I believe is popular for weddings ( I can totally see why!). The staff at breakfast (good choice)were very pleasant , and opera was emanating from the room previously mentioned! We were there on Palm Sunday, and a short service was conducted in the street outside which we were able to view from the windows at breakfast. The Gondola and Traghetto stop is right outside, and the Vaporetti stop is on the other side, between the hotel and the Ca d'Oro which is next door. Just gorgeous.
