Grand Hotel Majestic in Verbania, Italy

Dating back to 1870, the Grand Hotel Majestic dreamily evokes the spirit of la belle epoque. This member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World was a favorite with crowned heads of state and musicians such as Debussy and Toscanini, and today a lovingly carried out renovation returns it to its original glory. Beautifully situated on a promontory that juts into Italy's Lake Maggiore, it boasts classically styled bedrooms and suites, many with balconies and most with views of the water.

From English-style gardens to sweeping alpine views, you will feel as if you are living inside a dream. You might relax on the intimate, private beach, or take a private boat to discover the charms of the Borromean Islands—the 17th-century gardens of Isola Bella, the fishing village of Isola Superiore and the unspoiled natural beauty of Isola Madre. The setting for Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Stresa is a wonderful place to linger before returning to indulge at the hotel's Beauty and Wellness Centre, La Beola restaurant, and Il Toscanini bar.

This hotel is well kept, perfectly placed with good parking, a pedestrian & bike trail reserved for only non motorists. Breakfast is included and excellent service and friendly and helpful. The only downside is it cost us 50 Euros extra to keep our Labrador dog which was not mentioned on our internet reservation form, so make sure to ask! A beautiful town with greayt restaurants & shops next to Verbania, Italy.

First impressions are that this is an impressive building in an amazing location. Public areas are well presented and appear to be well maintained, which can't be said for the rooms. Rooms are quite small and in need of a serious update. Bathroom with only a shower curtain and no recess became a swimming pool each time the shower was used. We had to resort to using towels to build a shower base. Room servicing is not a priority and occurred very late in the day, 3.30 - 4pm, in spite of sign being placed on door early mornings.

We visited for a short family break (2 adults, 1 6 year old). We booked a suite. The hotel is gorgeous - real old world grace and charm, the restaurant was excellent with superb cuisine and an excellent wine cellar. They also happily accommodated our 6 year old (producing some of the most delicious chicken nuggets!). We also made extensive use of the spa (shiatsu and massages were first rate) and the pool was great. The location is stunning - right on the lake and the lovely small town of Pallanza is a 5 minute walk away. For more extensive shopping, we took the ferry over to Stresa (40 mins). Both have numerous very good restaurants and some terrific gelato! In addition, the hotel has a very well maintained garden and without exception ALL of the staff were incredibly polite, friendly and attentive. Ive spent much of my career staying in 4 and 5 star hotels and I can safely say this is right up there. We loved it, and we will be going back. If you want REAL Italian charm and style, book this hotel.

This hotel is full of opportunities, and my wife and I spend a lovely, relaxing and elegant week in this stunning building and location. The welcome, check-in and state of the Junior Suite were all faultless, and I would recommend the hotel to anyone wishing to be transported to a sense of timeless enjoyment on one of Italy's most beautiful lakes. We are fans, and would return. So, within this context of excellence, I offer the following thoughts on how a small number of anomalous and mildly irritating things could be changed to make a 4.5 stay a 5 star experience: - there is no water dispenser in the gym/leisure centre. Having used the gym and sauna I had to buy a bottle of water from the bar., and that felt money-grabbing - the mini-bar was poorly stocked: no wine or spirits -no umbrellas in reception, and we did have rain! - the breakfast is really poor and entirely out of keeping with the hotel's aspirations and other standards: e.g. watery fruit juice but an invitation to pay an extra 7 Euros for fresh juice: it felt money grabbing - no iron in the room; when I asked for an iron and board to be sent to my room I was told that this was not possible, 'because of company policy'. Stupid I have been privileged to stay in hotels around the world, both on business and in a personal capacity, and know a great hotel when I stay in one. Grand Hotel Majestic is capable of being in that category - the owner personally came to see us at reception when we left and thanked us for the stay etc, nice and unusual touch - but it needs to sort out the little inconsistencies and irritations. Then it will be both Grand and Majestic.

We pre-requested a walk-in shower. Put on 5th floor of hotel and had no water for shower or wash-hand basin due to non-existent pressure because "you are on the 5th floor". Receptionist was less than concerned about this. 3 days later they dug up a bit of the garden and put in a new pump! Still very poor shower but at least we had water. It is a 3/4 mile walk to the town, which, in temps. of +30 deg. C was a long way! More like 20 mins. not 5! The dinner menu was very expensive, so we didn't eat in the hotel. Gardens are lovely as was the swimming pool (indoor). Breakfast was the same every day - cold, greasy streaky bacon and cold scrambled egg. Lots of fresh fruit and sweet cakes. Bread stale and uninteresting. However, the weather was superb!
