Don’t bother

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

Don’t bother. The owners have a business model of diminishing returns - providing less makes them more money. The staff are the working wounded - the place has crippled their enthusiasm. Go to Harper and Ivy for breakfast in Yarra Glen. Chose a winery for lunch. And for dinner eat elsewhere. Comfortable , dated accommodation in need of refurbishment in restful surroundings.

Great atmosphere, rooms spotless, staff 10/10 and a great place to escape to relax. Breakfast was amazing.

Lovely place to stay in Yarra Valley but could do with a little TLC

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We went here for a last minute weekend and as I couldn’t get through by phone to ask if a twin room was possible, we ended up driving out to the hotel on the off chance Anne at reception & the housekeeping team made this possible and couldn’t do enough. We were given a lovely quiet room with a wraparound balcony (310) Hotel is a little dated and could do with a lick of paint but we felt really at home The one thing I felt it lacked was an outdoor area with comfy loungers where you could relax under a tree with a good book after a day exploring, plus a swimming pool to cool off. We did enjoy sitting on our terrace watching the kangaroos though Breakfast was delicious and all of the staff were delightful. We didn’t try the restaurant as despite being a Sat evening it was closed so we had to go to a pub down the road I can recommend the restaurant and vineyard next door at Yering Station plus there’s plenty to do in the local area. Thanks for a lovely stay

Empty for both guests and staff

When we arrived, we were greeted by a receptionist with blue hair and overly tight, short clothing. We immediately noticed that the place was more or less empty. The furniture was worn and didn’t look inviting to sit on. We were told the air conditioning had been broken the night before but was now fixed. That turned out not to be true. In the evening, it stopped cooling again. There was no one to contact — the receptionist had gone home at 5:30 pm, and when we tried calling reception, we got an AI voice that eventually disconnected the call. We had booked a table at the restaurant, but other guests told us the food wasn’t worth it and was far too expensive for the quality. As a result, we cancelled our reservation. After one night, I found another place 12 km away on the internet — such a relief to get away from Chateau Yering Hotel.

Pretentious yet incompetent and casual.

I booked Eleanor’s Restaurant within the Chateau Yering complex for our wedding anniversary. It was a surprise for my husband that I had great expectations of, given the impressions their website offers… the photography of fine dining and so on. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us. Several minutes later a staff member came out of the kitchen and jumped out of her skin at the sight of me. I explained who we were and that we had a booking which she then relayed to another staff member who then questioned – are you dining with us tonight? So, I repeated myself. Finally, despite being the only guests in the restaurant at that time, we were seated in what was literally the worst table in the restaurant. I felt like we were in Harry Potter’s cupboard. There was no view, no light, no ambience. We were in the naughty corner. Already I was embarrassed that I had brought my husband here on such a special occasion. We were so overdressed it was humiliating. The staff were dressed apathetically and communicated in a manner that was an unusual combination of nonchalance and over familiarity. That would have been entirely appropriate at the local pub, but I was paying big bucks here and the photo of the waiter on their website shows him correctly holding and pouring wine, whilst wearing formal black and white attire. The staff member who served us, (once she had composed herself and put her skin back on), picked up our wine glasses and poured the wine into them from the air whilst her dirty fingerprints made their way around each glass. By now I am wishing we had just gone to the local pub. Food wise we thought we would do an entrée and main. The entrees were not too bad – quail and kingfish. Then we had the kangaroo for mains. This was a mistake. Kangaroo is challenging to cook perfectly, and I should have ordered something safer. The memory that stays with me is that we had the worst table yet were the best dressed couple in the restaurant. Others who had nice tables were quite casually dressed and stared at us as though we did not belong there. In a nutshell that is how I felt the whole night… we just did not belong there. Literally the icing on the cake was being given a plate of a dessert morsel that had the words “happy birthday on it”. Despite me explicitly putting in writing in the reservation that it was our wedding anniversary and could we please arrange a special table!!!! An establishment that has historical significance and a beautifully adorned antique environment – should deliver the quality one expects, which should be nothing sort of the complete fine dining experience of excellence at every interaction, with both staff and food.
